SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A new study shows that young adults are seeing a spike in deaths from liver disease related to binge drinking. It's especially dangerous in California, where high alcohol content drinks are popular.The study, published this month in the British Medical Journal, says that the number of 25- to 34-year-olds who died annually from alcohol-related liver disease nearly tripled between 1999 and 2016, from 259 in 1999 to 767 in 2016, an average annual increase of around 10 percent.It cites binge drinking as a leading cause, because of rising rates of alcohol consumption between 2002 and 2012.It's especially bad in California, which the study says was among the top five states for those types of deaths.Local experts say the kind of alcohol we drink may be to blame, as craft beers tend to have higher concentrations of alcohol."If someone was having highly concentrated alcohol, then they're consuming more drinks per hour," says Dr. Rohit Loomba, with the UC San Diego Health Liver Center. "That will have detrimental effects on the liver, for sure."The CDC recommends no more than 1-2 drinks per day for "moderate" drinking. Binge drinking is defined as 4 or more drinks over 4-6 hours. Loomba says you may hit the "binge" point in fewer drinks if what you're having is stronger.For example, a Bud Light has just 4.2% alcohol by volume. Craft beers often have 6% or higher, so one craft beer may be as much as 2 or 3 other drinks."That quantity of alcohol intake over years definitely will contribute to higher risk for liver disease," says Loomba.He says people should ask themselves four questions to determine if they are drinking too much:1. Have you ever cut down on drinking? 2. Would you be annoyed if somebody asked you to cut down on drinking? 3. Do you feel guilty after drinking excessively over a weekend? 4. Do you need an "eye-opener" in the morning to get to work?Dr. Loomba says if you answered "yes" to 2 or more of these questions, you should talk to your doctor to discuss treatment.He also says obesity combined with alcohol can lead to more severe liver problems and even death. People with diabetes or who are overweight multiply their risk of the disease."If you're obese, you not only should restrict your alcohol, but you should try to lose some weight as well," says Loomba.The study says the financial crisis may have led to more binge drinking in the past decade, as young adults turned to alcohol to cope with financial stress. Researchers found the rise in alcohol-related deaths overlaps with rising rates of binge drinking from 2002 to 2012 observed across much of the U.S.The good news, according to the study, is that many liver diseases are preventable and reversible."Once you stop alcohol use, you can reverse complications related to it in the majority of cases," says Dr. Loomba. 2882

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Christmas morning, more than 700 families drove through a toy and food distribution at the Jacobs Center on Euclid Avenue in San Diego. Families were given boxes of food from the San Diego Food Bank, plus every child was able to get out of their car to receive at least three wrapped gifts. There were also free gift cards available.“My little one smiled. He was so happy,” said Elsa Sarabia, a mom of five who drove through.Sarabia said she works as a chef, and both she and her husband have lost hours at work this year. This event meant more gifts for her children that she might not have otherwise been able to afford.“We don’t have a lot of money to buy stuff for the kids and we appreciate everything you do for us,” she said, thanking the organizers.This is the fourth time this event was held. It’s hosted by Shane Harris and the People’s Alliance for Justice, with support from Supervisor Kristin Gaspar and the San Diego Lifeguards.The event had to adapt this year to be safe due to coronavirus, but Harris said they knew they had to make those changes to continue to fill this need. The breakfast would usually take place in a big hall, but organizers designed a drive-through format for 2020.“Really just trying to make sure the needs of the community are met particularly at a time where COVID-19 has made it really difficult for a lot of families economically,” said Harris.One volunteer was dancing through the whole morning as she distributed food, saying she was glad to give up her Christmas morning if it meant helping those in her community who needed it this year."A lot of these people do appear to be in great need. SAN FRANCISCO -- A massive fire broke out at a two-story commercial building in San Francisco Saturday night, according to KRON.The fire started inside the building and spread outward. The blaze took roughly 140 firefighters to extinguish.A total of eight people were displaced by the fire, but no one was injured.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 367

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— The man accused of raping and torturing a woman in his home in Rancho Penasquitos faced a judge today. 32-year-old Uber driver, Seyed Hassan Kaboli pleaded not guilty to 12 counts of sexual crimes. Kaboli peaked through his holding cell, as the judge announced his fate. San Diego Police said Kaboli bound, raped, and tortured a woman, multiple times at his home in Rancho Penasquitos on May 19th and 20th. Sky10 footage showed the victim being consoled by the police on Monday, and she said she ran naked to escape 24 hours of brutal misery. The next day, Kaboli was arrested just north of National City. 10News obtained a copy of the criminal complaint, explaining Kaboli’s 12 felony charges. They include:(5) Forcible oral copulation (2) Rape(1) Rape by a foreign object(1) Torture(1) Assault with great bodily injury(1) Sexual battery(1) False imprisonmentThe complaint also suggests that there may be another person involved in the crimes. Under count three, it reads Kaboli “inflicted aggravated mayhem and torture on the victim and another person.”Under count eleven, it reads “said person was unlawfully restrained by said defendant and an accomplice.”In the courtroom, neither the defense nor the district attorney would comment on a possible third party.Still, the judge issued a protective order for the victim— a woman, whose relationship was not disclosed. But Kaboli’s defense attorney said she was not his Uber customer. “There is no prior relationship,” Kaboli’s attorney, Ryan Tegnelia said. “He is not denying that they came into contact with each other on the date of the incident. But before that, they did not have any relationship.”Tegnelia said Kaboli’s family describes him as an introverted man who keeps to himself. They said they are shocked at his arrest. “This obviously came completely out of left field for them, caught everybody by surprise,” Tegnelia said. The judge set Kaboli’s bail amount at 0,000. San Diego (KGTV)- Hygiene continues to be a struggle for those living on the streets, especially during the pandemic. Non-profit Duwara Consciousness is helping the homeless gain access to a hot shower.The non-profit uses its food trailer to feed the homeless. On average, they provide about 1,500 meals per week."Our distribution network currently runs as far as San Ysidro and as far north as Carlsbad," says Harisimran Khalsa.But as we continue to experience the COVID-19 pandemic, Khalsa says access to a hot shower was limited for those in need. This prompted her and partner, Davinder Singh, to move forward with their idea of a shower trailer."Hygiene access is just not as frequent. So you do end up coming down with more bugs, more viruses," says Khalsa. "We think that this is really a time when we have to focus on hygiene for our homeless population."The shower trailer contains seven individual stalls, including one that is ADA compliant."It's really critical for our guests that they have a secure environment in which to shower."Khalsa says about 20 people can use the shower per hour. The stalls are cleaned after each use following CDC guidelines.The trailer comes equipped with sinks for people to wash their hands, shave or brush their teeth. It also has laundry services. The non-profit partners with other organizations to provide space and water.Duwara Consciousness plans to launch the shower trailer on Friday officially, but so far, they say users have been grateful for a simple hot shower. 1525
