SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans are remembering Talk Show Host and Entertainer Regis Philbin after he passed away Friday.Philbin's first television appearance was on the Regis Philbin Show at ABC 10News. Back then we were called KOGO TV."He never forgot where he started in television and that was right here in San Diego and he loved talking about it," Radio Personality and Friend Shotgun Tom Kelly said.Kelly rescued a couple old photos from the newsroom before they were thrown out depicting Regis' time at ABC 10News. One shows a youthful Philbin standing with the news crew in front of two rows of cars and a KOGO TV van.Another shows him at the Regis Philbin Show desk."I came to Channel 10 in 1960 and I think Regis started in 1961." Former Chief Photographer Lee Louis said he was 19-years-old at the time. He said Philbin seemed like a father figure back then, but he later realized Philbin was only 29.His most memorable assignment with Philbin was when Jayne Mansfield came to town. He said they "went to the old Lindbergh Field terminal off Pacific Highway before they even built the new terminal... He interviewed Jane Mansfield and as we talked about earlier, somewhere I have a black and white picture of him interviewing Jane Mansfield."Louis said he didn't realize until he saw Philbin on national television, what an icon he would become.Philbin's success, according to Kelly, was partially due to advice Philbin received from a San Diego Union Tribune Columnist named Don Freeman. Kelly said Philbin had just left the Navy and wanted to work in television. He said Philbin loved reading Freeman's articles and mustered up the courage to go meet him and talk about breaking into the business. Kelly said he gave him this advice, "I think you've got a future, the one thing that's going to make you stand out is be yourself. And that's what Regis was, he was always himself. If you met Regis in person, it would be the same way you saw him on television."That relatable personality drew millions of fans over the years, including Louis."I still enjoyed watching Regis and Kelly Live and 'yeah I knew that guy,' I started with him, or he started with me, I don't know which," Louis said smiling. Kelly said he had the privilege of hosting a Hollywood Media Professionals luncheon last year honoring Philbin's career. He wanted to surprise Philbin and brought out his first photographer. "Regis was overjoyed, it was just wonderful. I mean it was just a great surprise to pull that on a celebrity."Kelly said he would be missed."At least he didn't die of the virus [coronavirus]. It sounds like he went naturally. It sounds like he was home, I'm sure his family was around him. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police are asking for the public’s help finding a man who went missing early in the day Wednesday. According to police, 77-year-old David McArthur left his home on the 7900 block of Wing Span Drive around 10 a.m. to work on his boat at The Southwestern Yacht Club. He was last seen walking toward his vehicle in the parking lot of the yacht club, according to a family friend. McArthur was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s six years ago. McArthur is described as a white man, 77-years-old who is bald with grey hair on the sides and a thin build. Police say he also wears a yellow metal wedding ring and black band digital watch on his left wrist. McArthur is from New Zealand and speaks with a slight accent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego City Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry is calling for an audit of a city-leased building repeatedly shuttered over asbestos.The building at 101 Ash Street was closed Saturday and city employees were relocated for "the next few weeks" over asbestos violations, Bry said in a memo. Bry added that she received an update on June 17, 2019 that the project at the location remained "on schedule and within budget" after she requested an update 10 days prior."It is apparent that 101 Ash Street is neither on-time nor on-budget. The costs put the project on hold, leaving the building vacant, City News Service reported.Construction was also stopped over asbestos violations in August 2019.Bry is now asking the city to answer a slew of inquiries over the city's process used to inspect and purchase the building, total costs to-date associated with employee relocations, unforeseen budget increases, subcontractor performance, and the financial impact on the city's Development Services Department."It continues to be frustrating to hear about issues with 101 Ash Street," Bry wrote.Prior to the city leasing the building, the location was occupied by San Diego Gas & Electric from 1968 through 1998, and by Sempra Energy from 1998 through 2015. 1921

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police believe the man whose mud-covered body was found in the Tijuana River may have floated across the border into the United States, investigators said Friday. The man’s body was found Thursday in the river behind the Las Americas Premium Outlets, police said. He was partially covered in debris, water, and mud. An autopsy revealed the man had suffered traumatic injuries, but investigators did not provide details on the nature of them. “It is possible the man’s body was carried by the Tijuana River across the border into the United States, where it was discovered,” police said. The man had distinctive tattoos, which investigators hope to use to make an identification. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego businessman Doug Manchester has suggestions about how to help the people of the Bahamas recover from Hurricane Dorian. “It's devastation. It's beyond all anything that anybody can imagine. The aerial pictures don't do it justice on how much devastation there really is,” Manchester told 10News Thursday. Manchester loaded his plane with supplies and went to work on the island nation with relief organizers. “When this happened, I wanted to go down there as a private citizen to see all I could do to help,” Manchester said. Rebuilding is going to be a long and expensive process but Manchester believes it will happen. “It's going to cost billions, so every little bit helps,” said Manchester. Manchester, who has a long history in the Bahamas, was nominated to be the ambassador by President Trump. The nomination has been on hold for more than a year. “It's political, but hopefully that will see itself through in the next couple months because I can do a lot more as an ambassador than I can as a private citizen." Manchester hopes San Diegans will be generous in their donations to the Bahamas whether it’s through his charitable foundation or another aid group. 1205
