SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego’s rainy winter led to a bug-infested spring which is, in turn, giving away to a spider-filled summer. County of San Diego officials say 2019 could bring a “bumper crop” of orb weaver spiders due to an increase of its food supply. “So, you’re probably going to be running into a lot of spider webs very soon, if you haven’t already,” said County supervising vector ecologist Chris Conlan. Conlan has a term for what happens after a person walks into a web: the crazy spider dance. Orb weaver spiders, which include any spider that weaves a web, are usually not harmful to people, according to Conlan. They generally don’t bite unless they’re threatened. “A well-fed female can be a pretty imposing spider,” Conlan said to County News Center. “But they’re generally nothing to be worried about. In all honesty, if you run into their web, their general reaction is to bail off quick. They don’t like to hang around once something that’s big enough to smash through their web hits it. They know it’s not anything they want to tackle and wrap up to eat.” Conlan recommends avoiding walking through areas spiders can use as anchor points. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several men tried to scale the border fence at Border Field State Park Thursday evening.Video shows the men sitting on top of the wall attempting to get over. Border Patrol responded and agents were able to break up the crowd on the Mexico side of the border. Following the incident, the agency said it is willing to add agents in the area as needed. According to Border Patrol officials, about 167 arrests are made per day at the San Diego sector of the border. VIDEO: Migrants climb over border fence at Border Field State ParkEarlier in the week, dozens of migrants were caught on video climbing over the same section of the border fence. During that incident, several people successfully made it over the fence and onto the beach on the U.S. side of the border before being apprehended by agents. A total of 24 people, 18 men and six women, were taken into custody. According to Border Patrol, 23 of the people who crossed the border illegally were from Honduras while the 24th person was from Guatemala. 1036

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s City Council Monday approved a key step in turning Horton Plaza into The Campus at Horton. At Monday night’s meeting, the council approved reducing the current retail deed restriction on the property, creating the opportunity to build the office space. The campus would combine employment, entertainment and retail. According to a news release, the office space would be large enough for 3,000 to 4,000 jobs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several protesters were arrested in downtown San Diego Friday night as demonstrators gathered following a grand jury announcement in the Breonna Taylor case.San Diego Police tweeted just before 11 p.m. that three protesters were arrested at B Street and Columbia Street.One of the demonstrators was arrested for robbery of a cell phone while two others were arrested for interfering with an arrest. Police said a cell phone was stolen from a victim while they were recording the protesters.Police said earlier that roughly 40 to 50 protesters gathered in the downtown area.“We are again with the group to ensure they remain safe and the community remains safe. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say a man has died after an officer-involved shooting in the City Heights area on Thursday.SDPD officers responded to reports of a man with a gun in the 4200 block of Menlo Ave. at about 4 p.m., according to SDPD Lt. Matt Dobbs.Police say two women were driving in the area when they were confronted by a man with a handgun."The man manipulated the slide of the gun as if he were loading it and pointed the gun towards the women," according to a SDPD news release.
