SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - County health officials are encouraging local women to get vaccinated for "whooping cough" amid a possible epidemic.The county says pertussis, commonly known as "whooping cough," could turn into a possible local epidemic based on historical patterns."It’s critical for pregnant women and people who come into close contact with young infants to get vaccinated," Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said. "Newborns are very susceptible to whooping cough because they are too young to be fully vaccinated. Wooten said the high numbers were partially attributed to reporting methods."Pertussis activity in our region appears to higher than the rest of the state, but much of this is due to the excellent detection and reporting of this potentially deadly disease by San Diego pediatricians and family physicians," Wooten said.Pertussis is a cyclical disease that peaks every three to five years, according to health officials. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As we continue to work through the pandemic, a couple of Carmel Valley kids are working to spread “some good news” for San Diegans. Brothers Zach and Asher Swazey are putting together their own newscasts.Its called “SGN San Diego.” The newscast is filled with good news.“You want to have something that will affect people in a positive way,” says 13-year-old Zach.The brothers are now working on episode two. They say it was a lot of work putting everything together.“It took us 2-3 weeks,” says ten-year-old Asher. “We went through multiple stages of editing. It took a little of time to make the script and film.”The boys say they were inspired to start SGN San Diego after watching actor and filmmaker John Krasinski on Youtube.The boys say their video is getting more views, but their headline is to make people feel good.“When you’re making a YouTube channel, it’s not about how many likes you get or how many subscribers, it’s how it affects people.”The brothers say their parents are also a big help. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans maintenance crews closed the westbound Interstate 8 connector to northbound state Route 67 at 9 p.m. Thursday night, but lanes were reopened at 5 a.m. Friday morning. The closure took effect for guardrail repair, according to Caltrans.Signs were posted to direct motorists on westbound I-8 to exit at West Main Street and turn left to eastbound I-8 to SR-67.Motorists were reminded to be work zone alert and slow down when approaching Caltrans vehicles with amber flashing lights.Caltrans says Californians can expect more roadway improvement projects like this made possible by the recently passed Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, Senate Bill 1.  715

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities confirmed Monday that a deadly shooting in Chula Vista and a second shooting at Sunset Cliffs in April are related.Police say three people, Britney Canal known as "Giggles", 29, Cesar Alvarado, known as "Capone", 39, and Michael Pedraza, known as "Monster", 27, have been charged and are being held without bail for the deadly crime spree.According to a prosecutor, the murder charges with special circumstances may lead to the death penalty. To illustrate the callous nature of the suspects, the District Attorney said the three celebrated after killing a man in Chula Vista.  627
