EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Over the course of the Pandemic, sisters Berlin and Bristol Dixon kept their favorite extra-curricular activity going strong. The two created "East County Kids News" as a way to keep doing school news, even while school was canceled.When in-person learning resumed in the fall, the girls went their separate ways, with Berlin going to Los Coches Creek Middle School and Bristol at WD Hall Elementary. But they took what they learned from EC Kids News and used it to make their school newscasts better."I feel like we have a lot more resources," says Berlin. "We learned how to work with computers a lot more ever break. So, when we returned, we knew a lot more about iMovie and all the stuff you need to know for broadcast."But, beyond the technical improvements they brought back to campus, the girls say they learned how important their work had been to keep the community together."I have learned that kids are resilient and they can go above and beyond," says Bristol. "And that when you want something you can go for it.""It's really taught us how amazing our community is," says Berlin. "Also that it's really important to stay connected with everyone, because it has been a rough time but when we connect it makes that rough time not as hard."Their efforts have impressed teachers at both schools."For them to find the silver lining in the cloud is is inspiring to to everyone," says Laura Albright, a teacher at WD Hall. "You always set your expectation high for your students, but they totally surpassed anything we could think of."The only downside to returning to campus is losing the chance to co-anchor as sisters. (KGTV) — The Dehesa School District Board voted 4-0 Friday afternoon to place their superintendent on paid administrative leave amid a fraud investigation.Earlier this week, the San Diego District Attorney’s Office charged Superintendent Nancy Hauer with one count of misappropriating public funds.She was one of 11 people charged in a statewide scheme, in which the DA says two men siphoned more than million in state money through a network of 19 charter schools.“The defendants sought out small school districts with limited experience in oversight and proposed they authorize online charter schools to earn additional public funds in the form of oversight fees,” the DA’s Office wrote in a summary of the charges.At Friday’s special Dehesa School District Board meeting, the board spent an hour and a half in closed session with legal counsel discussing Hauer’s employment.Board President, Cindy White refused an interview with 10News.On the dais, Board Vice President Karl Backer told the audience, “we have initiated new legal council to peel apart the charter operations to make sure sound practices and legal compliance is met.” 1165

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) — East County authorities are searching for a reported person trying to lure students at a nearby elementary school.El Cajon Police said officials at Flying Hills Elementary requested extra patrols Thursday over concerns of someone trying to lure students. Police said a 9-year-old boy was in an alley near the 1300 block of North Cuyamaca St. when a man approached in a vehicle. The man waved to the boy and said "get in the car." The vehicle was described as a red sedan, while the suspect was described as a white man in his 20s, with a mustache, red shirt, and black baseball hat.Police said they are aware of two other separate incidents as well. The first was on Tuesday in the 100 block of South Mollison Ave. A 12-year-old girl was approached by a man in a vehicle as she was walking to school. The man asked her a question and made a sexual comment before driving away, police said.The man was described as a white man, with balding dark hair, "scruffy" unshaven face, and possibly wearing a gray shirt and gray pants.The second incident occurred that same day just after 3:15 p.m. on Swallow Dr. A 13-year-old girl was walking home east of Finsh St. when man on foot approached her and said "come with me, I'm safe." He was described as a white man in his 40s, with a gray beard, short dark hair, and last seen wearing tan shorts, a dark shirt, black baseball hat, and black backpack.Police are investigating all three incidents, but said they do not believe they are related. Police have increased patrols in the area and at nearby schools.School staff from Lakeside Middle School also reported a suspicious incident as well just after 9:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.
