BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Tuesday he and visiting U.S. President Barack Obama agreed during their talks to resolve the nuclear issues of the Korean Peninsula and Iran through dialogue.     "Both of us remain committed to resolving the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and consultation," Hu said when meeting the press with Obama after their bilateral talks. "Such a commitment serves the common interests of China and the United States and all other parties concerned."     Hu said China and the United States will work with other parties concerned to stick to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the six-party talks process to safeguard the peace and stability of northeast Asia.     The two presidents stressed that it is very important for the stability in the Middle East and the Gulf Region to uphold the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and properly resolve the Iran nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiation, Hu said. 

BEIJING, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter Scale hit a border area between northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and the northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Saturday afternoon, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.     The epicenter was at 38.2 degrees north latitude and 106.6 degrees east longitude.     Xinhua reporters in Yinchuan, capital of Ningxia, said tremor was felt in the downtown area.     No casualties have been reported.

MACAO, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Saturday that "one country, two systems" had been successfully implemented in both Hong Kong and Macao since their return to the motherland.     "The two special administrative regions have accumulated rich experience in the regard, and can learn from each other and make progress together," said the president when meeting with Donald Tsang, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and principal officials of the Hong Kong SAR government.     Hu and Tsang arrived here Saturday to attend the celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland and the inauguration of the third-term government of the Macao SAR. BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) Wednesday voiced strong opposition against the United States' imposition of anti-subsidy tariffs on Chinese oil well pipes, saying the move was "discriminatory."     The United States made a decision Tuesday to impose duties ranging from 10.36 percent to 15.78 percent on Chinese oil well pipes for alleged unfair subsidies.     "China is strongly opposed to the U.S. move of continuing with its discriminatory measures and arbitrarily raising the anti-subsidy duty rates," said Yao Jian, spokesman of the MOC.     Yao reiterated that the United States should live up to its promise made at the G20 Summit and the consensus reached earlier by leaders of the two countries to fight trade protectionism.     Earlier this month, the U.S. Commerce Department also slapped preliminary anti-dumping tariffs on the pipe up to 99 percent based on the allegation that "Chinese producers/exporters have sold OCTG (oil country tubular goods) in the United States at prices ranging from zero to 99.14 percent less than normal value."     Customs data showed that pipes involved were worth 3.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2008, taking up 46 percent of the total amount of Chinese steel products exported to the United States (6.9 billion dollars).     More than 90 companies were affected, including major steel companies like Baosteel, Tianjin Pipe and Ansteel.

GENEVA, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming on Monday called on the Seventh WTO Ministerial Conference to send a positive signal to the world to help stabilize and improve the crisis-hit global economy.     "Today at this gathering we should send a positive signal to the rest of the world, a signal to 'open up, advance and reform,'" Chen said at the opening plenary of the three-day conference, which was participated by trade and agriculture ministers from most of the 153 WTO members.     "Now the global economy has shown signs of stabilizing and improving, but the foundation for the turnaround is not solid. The road to complete recovery remains long and winding," Chen said.     He stressed the importance of trade opening and resisting protectionist pressures for world recovery. "We should not close our doors for fear of risks or challenges."     "As long as WTO members can form consensus to stand by their WTO commitments, not adopt protectionist measures and remain open, we will be able to gather enormous strength to tide over the crisis," he said.     The minister also stressed the need to advance the long-running Doha Round global trade negotiations as a way to reform and enhance the multilateral trade system.     Eight years after its launch with a primary goal to help poor countries prosper through trade opening, the complex Doha Round is still not in its endgame because WTO members cannot narrow gaps on such key issues as agricultural tariffs, subsidies and industrial market access.     After several missed deadlines, WTO members have set a latest deadline for concluding the Round in 2010.     Chen stressed that progress made in the past eight years, as reflected in the agriculture and NAMA (non-agricultural market access) texts as of December 2008, "is hard won, and cannot be overturned for any excuse."     He also called for respecting the Doha Round's development mandate and keeping multilateral negotiations as the major channel." Then it is hopeful that the talks can be successfully concluded in 2010."     According to the Chinese minister, the WTO, as the only institutional arrangement governing global trade, needs necessary reform to improve its rules and functions, broaden its influence over other important international coordinating mechanisms, and assume a greater responsibility and role in governing global economy.     The organization should reform toward the direction of promoting sustainable development, Chen said.     It also needs to step up efforts in Aid for Trade and trade finance, while advancing trade liberalization. As a result, developing countries, especially LDCs (Least Developed Countries),can gain real benefits from globalization, he added.
