SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Rock ’n’ Roll marathon returns to San Diego in June, bringing hundreds of athletes and music to city streets. The 5K event is scheduled for Saturday June 1, while the half-marathon and marathon will be held Sunday, June 2. Entry fees are , 2, and 2 respectively. The marathon course starts on Sixth Avenue near Balboa Park. It extends as far east as Kensington, and north to Mission Bay Park, with a finish in Little Italy. Runners can enjoy the sounds of bands along the course, and support from San Diego cheerleading groups. For those who don’t want to run, the Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon Health and Fitness Expo will take place Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1 at the San Diego Convention Center. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Salk Institute's cutting-edge research to reverse climate change is getting noticed and supported in a big way.Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos donated million through the Bezos Earth Fund last week, a huge boost after Sempra Energy jump-started the project with million Nov. 9.Salk's Harnessing Plants Initiative adapts crops we eat, grown around the world, to extract more carbon dioxide out of the air and hold it in their roots."It’s really great waking up every day and knowing that you can work on a problem that is so urgent and is the most existential problem in this world and I’ve been worried about this since I was in middle school," co-director of HPI Wolfgang Busch said.Busch said they came up with the project while brainstorming what positive impact on the world could they make with plants.He said they're focused on six crops including, corn, soybean, canola, wheat and rice.Busch said they are in the research phase and see two paths to achieving their goal, genetically modify seeds in the lab or specialized breeding between plants to get the traits they are looking for.These crops are already being grown around the world."If you take together the area that they are planted, it’s larger than the subcontinent of India," Busch said, a huge untapped potential.Busch said of the world's emissions each year, "it could be possible that 30% of this could be drawn down by these plants if it is widely adopted."Busch said we could get the modified plants in the ground and start seeing the effects in the next 10-15 years."I think I am very fortunate to work on this problem, I am really thrilled to do the work, to make an impact," Busch said. 1690

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego International Airport expects an increase in travelers during the upcoming holiday season, even as cases of coronavirus surge in San Diego."We have seen an increase (in the past)," says Airport Spokesperson Nicole Hall. "So we are planning for that. We have additional flights leaving San Diego and anticipate an increase in the travel during that time."When the pandemic started, passenger travel at the San Diego International Airport dropped more than 90%. It has since recovered a bit. Airport officials say they're now down 67% from last year.With more people expected to fly over the holidays, the airport has increased it's efforts to make sure everyone who passes through it stays safe.They are requiring masks for every person in the airport. Signs shaped like surfboards help mark 6-foot social distancing requirements on the floor. Seats are marked as "off-limits." Plexiglass dividers line ticket counters and concession areas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three women were rescued from a Blacks Beach cliff early Thursday.The three women, all from East County, were stuck on a cliff in the Box Canyon area of La Jolla just after 8 a.m., according to San Diego Fire-Rescue and lifeguards. Fire crews said the women became stuck just above the beach, prompting crews to use a rope system to hoist them down."As you can see, even using a rope system to get down to the beach is challenging because of the steep and slippery cliff conditions," SDFD said in a Facebook post. 540

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Symphony has overcome the last major obstacle to a permanent home along San Diego's waterfront.The Port of San Diego's Board of Commissioners has granted a 15-year lease for the Symphony's Bayside Performance Park project. The project will see the construction of a seashell-shaped concert venue at Embarcadero Marina Park South, as well as various improvements to the surrounding park.The lease also includes four options allowing the Symphony to extend their lease up to 50 years.The San Diego Symphony will invest a minimum of million toward those improvements, including 66 new restrooms, expansion of the current promenade, and improvements to the park's existing basketball courts and exercise equipment.RELATED: Margaritaville Island Resort coming to San Diego“We’re confident concert-goers will love the improved access and state-of-the art stage and sound system, and bayfront visitors will love the new and improved park,” said Board Chairman Garry Bonelli.The Symphony could begin construction of the venue as soon as September. Since 2004, the Symphony has had to assemble and disassemble its temporary venue for its Bayside Summer Nights concert series.
