For more than 40 years, The Guardian Angels have been putting their lives on the line to protect citizens. The group, which is made up of volunteers, don't get paid and don't carry weapons. Advocates of the group say they have made a big difference in public safety. But the group is having trouble attracting new members, and it's losing its headquarters in Colorado. It’s Saturday evening on one of Denver’s most dangerous streets, when the calls of concerns start coming in. “We got a report from a passerby about an individual shooting over here,” said Robi Salo, commander of the Colorado Guardian Angels. The word "shooting" refers to drug use, and that's exactly what Salo and his team found when they arrived to the scene. They approached young man, sitting in a parking lot with a needle in his hand. “We aren’t going to bust your b***s or nothing,” Salo says. “If you’re going to shoot, you’re going to shoot.”The young man decides, at least while the Guardian Angels are around, not to inject himself with drugs. Salo chalks it up a small win. Back in the day, the Guardian Angels had a reputation of being a Robin Hood, while robbing drug dealers and donating that money to local shelters. The group started out protecting New York City subway riders in the late 1970’s. The Colorado Guardian Angel chapter opened in Denver in 1993. Twenty-six years later, their numbers are dropping, their members are getting older and they’re losing their headquarters.“The numbers have dwindled over the years,” Salo says of the Colorado Guardian Angels. “Instead of having 100 active, we have 25 maybe on the deep list; probably about 12 that are heavily active. And we’re aging. I’m 55 we have members that are as old as 70.”Salo says while there are more Guardian Angels chapters across the country, the number of active members has stayed the same at around 3,000 since the mid-1990’s. The angels are aging out, but there is hope to replace them. “I’m kind of, right now, a rookie; fresh meat,” said Zane Salazar, who at 16 years old is following his father’s footsteps in becoming a Guardian Angel. “We want to show the community that we’re out there, show the community that we care, and I think people will come along if they see that.”We reached out to several national and local law enforcement agencies for their take on the Guardian Angels. None of them wanted comment, but police departments typically don't encourage citizens to take the law into their own hands. He said a group of people physically assaulted him and threatened him using racially-charged language.The mayor of Bloomington has condemned what he saw in a series of videos that has now gone viral, being shared thousands of times. The video shows several men holding a black man against a tree, with his arms behind his back, allegedly threatening to lynch him.'Let him go, dude, please let him go. Please let him go.'"To be pinned down at the tree and hear him yell at his friend, 'Get a noose,' not even a rope, to get a noose with so much intent and the connotation that that carries in our society, I knew my life was in danger," Vauhxx Booker said.In disbelief is how Booker said he felt when men were seen holding him against his will — shouting 'white power' and other racial slurs."There was a moment where a white woman that was standing by yelled out not to kill me and as I was underneath these men struggling to breathe. I realized that she was talking about me, not to kill me," Booker said.Booker said he and some friends went to watch the lunar eclipse on the 4th of July at Lake Monroe. A group of men informed them the route they were taking to get to the public access beach was on private property but then things got hostile, leaving Booker with a minor concussion, abrasions and patches of hair ripped out."What went through my mind was I could be the next person like that or I could be the next hashtag," Booker said.What saved his life, Booker said, was his friends along with bystanders that heard the commotion and demanded the attackers let him go, refusing to leave."They stayed. It made a difference," Booker said. "I wasn't going to be a Black person that died and heard my own death narrated in front of me.""Horrified," Shelli Yoder, Democratic candidate for Indiana Senate District 40, said. "I am horrified, not surprised, but disgusted.""My heart is breaking for our town," Nicole Bolden, Bloomington city clerk, said. "This is Bloomington. But being a lifeguard in Vancouver, Canada means he also keeps watch over frozen water. “I'd rather make 10,000 rescues in the warm ocean than one here,” Hollett says of the frozen lake.This part of Canada, nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the North Shore Mountains, it’s the only part of the country where the average temperature stays above freezing, even in the winter. So, when the lakes start to freeze over, it’s a novelty. The lake attracts visitors, who are often tempted to tread on the thin ice, often times with their pets. “There’s people that don't understand the ice, so they just figure they can walk on it,” Hollett says. When temperatures are colder, as they have been this week, the City of Vancouver Parks and Recreation department dubs a few of their summer lifeguards, "iceguards." "Lifeguards are always scanning and keeping an eye out, so that's what our iceguards do,” Sean Healy with the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation says. “When they come out to iceguard, they actually do a walking patrol around the lake. They also keep binocs close at hand.”Hollett says he’s had to make ice rescues before for people’s pets. “Believe it or not, I’ve saved many dogs,” he recalls. “I grabbed their collar like this, reach out and bring ‘em up in the ice." 1369

And regulators okayed a 30% rate hike for Capitol Preferred.Jupiter homeowner Heidi Epstein said her property rates shot up by 50% when her insurer stopped doing business in Florida. Protecting her property will now cost Heidi an additional ,500 a year."In the middle of a pandemic when everyone is not sure what their financials are going to look like, this is not the time to have everything going sky high," she said.The insurance industry blames the 2017-2018 storm season. Hurricanes Irma and Michael caused catastrophic damage and triggered more than billion in claims.Senator Jeff Brandes (R-St. Petersburg) says the storms and rampant lawsuits against insurance carriers are driving the steep hikes in rates."They are filing more and more lawsuits they know some of these insurance companies will settle, and ultimately those costs are passed on to homeowners," he said.Insurance Industry watchdog The Federal Association for Insurance Reform points to thousands of lawsuits filed by contractors. President Paul Handerhan says roofers, plumbers and others solicit homeowners through ads, calls or door knocks and convince them to file an insurance claim. Handerhan described the pitch to homeowners as: "Let us do a free inspection of your roof, let us go inside the property of your home to see if we can find any damages. We will file a claim on your behalf."Brandes says all those claims snowball and lead to premium hikes."You have hundreds if not thousands of people asking for new roofs then all of a sudden rates across the state begin to skyrocket."Pasco County homeowner Linda Cempe got a new roof after contractor Smart Storm Solutions cold-called her about possible storm damage. She said the roofer told her that "other than a minor deductible, the whole cost for the repairs, including the facia and soffits, would be covered."The I-team checked court records and found Smart Storm Solutions filed over 300 lawsuits against insurers, including Linda Cempe's carrier in 2019 alone.Smart Storm Solutions staff attorney Robert MacKinnon says the company will only canvas neighborhoods with known storm damage. He also said the company files cases when insurance companies refuse to pay the full cost of a claim."They are confirmed claims we are arguing over the extent of damages," MacKinnon said.Smart Storm Solutions also sued Larry Kohman's insurance company over his claim after cold calling the homeowner about roof damage.We checked and found court documents showing the Kohmans' insurer settled with Smart Storm Solutions over a year ago. But the contractor never returned to replace the roof."We don't sleep much," Larry said, who explained he and his wife constantly worried about the growing amount of water damage in their home caused by a leaky roof.Smart Storm Solutions' attorney blamed the pandemic for the delay in Kohman's case and apologized, saying the company should have communicated better. After we started asking questions, Smart Storm Solutions replaced the couple's roof.MacKinnon says the lawsuits his company is filing are needed to keep insurers in check and are not part of the rate hike problem.Brandes says insurance rates could double in the next three years over claims and litigation. He says he will propose legislative reform measures that would reduce attorney fees and route some lawsuits into mediation.
