SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Flooding from a fire service line threatened Wednesday to buckle a portion of a North Park street, blocks from the sites of several significant pipe breaks.The rupture was reported about 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of Polk Avenue and Kansas Street. The road buckled about 12 inches and water spilled onto half the roadway.Within an hour, the water department reached the scene to evaluate the situation. A city spokesperson tells 10News the break was on a fire service line, the pipe connecting a fire hydrant to a water main. They also said no one is without water, and that the break would be repaired the same day. Officials said this season the deaths have ranged in people 1- to 101-years-old. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For the first time in nearly 100 years, an integrated company of male and female recruits at MCRD San Diego are about to begin their journey into becoming Marines. These future Marines will be led by graduates from MCRD's first ever integrated Drill Instructor Course. Now the mission of the course is to screen, train, and further develp leadership and command presence of selected Marines, in order to successfully perform duties of a drill instructor."We are taking them from the leadership skills, that they had in the fleet, and further refining them here," says Major Lynn Stow, Director of the MCRD San Diego Drill Instructor Course. "The drill instructor's goal is to successfully transfer recruits into United States Marines."Fifty-seven Marines are scheduled to graduate from the grueling 57 day course, and for the very first time, the graduating class will include 3 females."Getting the opportunity to come here was almost like divine intervention, everything just kind of fell into place," says student Sargent Stephanie Fahl. "To come here and make it this far, I'm really proud of myself."These future drill instructors at MCRD are looking forward to changing the lives of young 17 and 18-year-old recruits. "The change I'd like to instill in the recruits is to obviously maintain that discipline that's a staple of recruit training,"says student Sargent Stephanie Jordi. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family grieved the loss of a father, mother and daughter after a raging fire at their Logan Heights home in October.Thursday evening Aunt Rosa Cortes explained how the two surviving children, Wendy, 23, and Angel, 16, were faring. She described areas of Wendy's back and shoulder healing from the burns, saying her skin is getting it's color back.She said her niece and nephew are having a hard time sleeping, saying in Spanish, "every noise, every sound scares them."The fire ignited October 13th, around 4:30 a.m.. Neighbors woke up to screams. Ultimately the father, Jose Antonio Romero Mayo, 44, Daughter Iris, 21, and mother, Nicolasa Mayo-Cortes, 46, died from their injuries.Aunt Rosa said Jose was her favorite brother. She called him her protector.Now she's protecting his two surviving children, saying they can continue staying with her as long as they need.Thursday the family reunited inside Faith on 54th in Oak Park.Cortes said the caskets remained closed and she didn't want to remember them the way they died.Her nephew, Wilber Romero, 26, was arrested on Arson and Homicide charges.She said Wendy and Angel haven't been told about their brother's possible involvement, instead waiting for them to heal before asking questions.Cortes said they need help, psychologically and monetarily to move forward.
