SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new leadership course created by a San Diego entrepreneur is breaking down barriers for minority women in business.Christelyn Karazin grew up in Los Angeles County, where she said she didn't see a lot of representation in the classroom."A lot of times I would be the only Black person in the classroom, the only Black person anywhere," Karazin said.She said she learned to get comfortable in a predominantly White world."I graduated from Loyola Marymount University as a Communications Major and graduated Cum Laude. I thought I had all the skills I needed to do really well and then I met my boss from hell," Karazin said solemnly.At the first "get to know your team" lunch, her boss said she was "lucky" to get the salary she was hired with and told the group how much she made, which was more than her colleagues. Karazin said she felt cut down at every turn.Her parents didn't have knowledge in this arena. She said her father was a sharecropper's son with an eighth-grade education and her mother was a schoolteacher.She was missing a rudder to navigate office politics, giving her the idea to launch a leadership course. It would teach other women what she's learned through decades of trials and tribulations."A big part of The Pink Pill is about learning the game and I organized it based on game pieces in chess... The king is a hierarchy management style, with very direct communication. I have a direct communication style but not everybody does." Karazin said knowing the communication style of your bosses and leveraging that will propel you upward.Lean In's State of Black Women in Corporate America Study published in 2020 shows Black women are severely underrepresented in senior management roles.Highlighting the importance of tools that help underrepresented communities rise. The Pink Pill for Business launched online on June 15."We have hundreds of people enrolled now," Karazin said. "It gives me such pleasure that the things I have went through, my failures, and this horrible experience was turned into something amazing." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego High School teacher said she warned her school administration about the behavior of a former teacher nearly a year before he was arrested.According to a recently filed lawsuit, Vanessa Montgomery alleged Juan Carlos Herrera engaged in a continuous course of sexually harassing conduct. The lawsuit states, "On a near-weekly basis, Herrera made comments about Ms. Montgomery's dress, looks, and body."Herrera, formerly a special needs curriculum instructor, was sentenced to 10 years in state prison earlier this month. In August, Herrera pleaded guilty to 11 felonies, including lewd acts on a child and assault. Montgomery said she first met Herrera in 2016. She was new on campus."I was basically just trying to survive and learn things along the way," Montgomery explained.Montgomery said she had her first uncomfortable encounter with Herrera just a few months on the job."I just want to let you know that the dress you're wearing and the outfit you have looks really good, and it hugs your body really well," Montgomery said Herrera told her.Last week Montgomery filed a lawsuit against Herrera and the San Diego Unified School District alleging sexual harassment and failure to prevent sexual harassment.Based on the lawsuit, "Herrera's sexually harassing comments included: Remarks that Ms. Montgomery's clothes made her 'curves look good;' remarks that Herrera would do anything for Ms. Montgomery as long as she wore 'those shorts;' and a comment and attendant gesture suggesting Ms. Montgomery needed to hold her chest when walking down stairs to stop her breast from bouncing."Montgomery shared with Team 10 Investigator Adam Racusin that she felt "very uncomfortable all the time," around Herrera.Montgomery said words eventually escalated to touching. In her lawsuit, she described an occasion where she spilled coffee on her shirt. She states Herrera took a toothpick out of his mouth and pushed on her breast where the stain was located with his toothpick."He took it out, put it back in his mouth and winked at me, smiled and walked away," she said.Montgomery said she took her concerns to her supervisor, the vice principal at the school. She said she had a face-to-face conversation and also sent an email in May 2018.According to the email obtained by 10News, Montgomery wrote, "I would like to inform you about some issues that have occurred in the last couple of years with Juan Herrera. I have decided to report sexual harassment against Herrera."The email described four incidents in three years.In the email she also detailed Herrera's interactions with female students, writing, "Herrera always has a group of young girls around him. He pulls them out of class to offer support which makes me wonder what has he said to them. He is normally in a classroom with the girls and without another teacher. I know he means well but the comments that I have shared above make it hard to trust him."That email was sent nearly a year before Herrera was arrested."He'd be working with groups of girls in classrooms alone with the door closed," Montgomery said. "I witnessed that multiple times."Prosecutors said Herrera assaulted an unnamed victim "on almost a daily basis" between February 2018 and March of this year, when the girl was 15 and 16 years old. He was arrested in May 2019. "The HR (human resources) office had no documents related to complaints that were made by Ms. Montgomery and they had no intention of investigating any of those complaints, and that was even after Mr. Herrera was arrested," Montgomery's attorney Andrew Hillier said.Hillier said when an organization becomes aware that an employee has reported sexually harassing behavior, the organization has a responsibility to investigate. He said they also have to take some sort of temporary remeasures to ensure it stops and if its warranted take permanent measures."The allegation is sexual harassment of course, but it's also a failure on the part of the district to step in once they became aware of the harassment," Hillier said.According to the lawsuit, the district did not interview Montgomery. "To Ms. Montgomery's knowledge, SDUSD did not interview anyone in relation to her complaint. SDUSD did not make Ms. Montgomery aware of any temporary or permanent remedial measures the district put in place to address Herrera's harassment," the lawsuit stated.Montgomery said the harassment continued until Herrera was arrested.A spokesperson for the school district didn't answer any of our questions about Montgomery's allegations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A powerful new public service campaign called "End Family Fire" launched Wednesday by the Brady Center for Gun Violence Prevention aims to promote awareness for gun safety in the home. The center says eight children are hurt or killed in a firearm accident every single day in the United States. Carol Landale with the Brady Center says the goal of the campaign is to show people that something can be done. According to the center, more than four and a half million children live in homes with loaded and unlocked guns, and three in four know where the guns in their home are stored.The term, “Family Fire” was developed specifically for this campaign and refers to a shooting involving an improperly stored or misused gun found in the home that results in death or injury.The Brady Center’s goal is to introduce “Family Fire” into the vocabulary of the American public, much like "Designate a Driver" and "Secondhand Smoke Kills" became powerful and effective slogans for their respective causes. 1071
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego college student out for a run was attacked by a swarm of bees — stung at least a hundred times — in the North County.Jaeyoung Choi tells ABC 10News anchor Lindsey Pena that he was running on a bike path near SR-56 and Carmel Valley Road on Aug. 4, when he started noticing the bees."Next thing I know, a couple bees are hitting me thought it was no big deal and then there were a lot more bees and then a lot more bees and then all of a sudden I'm getting swarmed," Choi said.During the attack, Choi said he saw a man in a beekeeper outfit and tried to get help from him, though he was unsuccessful."Did not speak any English at all the beekeeper so I couldn't get the guys info or even know if he's licensed or not, just one guy there, just really weird," Choi said.Eventually, a cyclist came across Choi and called 911, and Choi was rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital. There, he learned he had been stung more than 100 times."At the hospital, they pulled out around 150 stingers or so basically swelled up to a balloon," said Choi.Choi says a week since the attack, his body is still reacting and breaking out in hives. He's also still dealing with the medical bills from the incident."I just can't imagine if it were somebody younger or a lot older I definitely think they would've left in a body bag," Choi said.James McDonald, a professional beekeeper and owns Encinitas Bee Company, said based on the bees' behaviors, he believes they were a form of Africanized "Killer Bees," adding that San Diego is home to plenty of them."They're called 'killer bees' for a reason, they kill people," McDonald said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A sailor who was rescued at sea off San Onofre State Beach in San Clemente was taken to San Diego by the Coast Guard Monday.The man called Joint Harbor Operations in San Diego about 11:20 a.m. to report his 18-foot boat was taking on water 12 miles offshore.“I tried a couple of things to fix the problem and couldn’t figure out where the water was coming in from,” Gillest said.He was able to radio the Coast Guard for help, who sent a helicopter crew to rescue him.“I was in contact with the pilot. He said if the stern starts going underwater, its time to get away from the boat,” Gillest said. “The uncertainty was when I was getting out to me, watching it fill with water, I was like who’s going to get out here? Am I going to be in the water before anyone gets here?”By around 12:45 p.m., the boat began to sink and Gillest was forced to jump into the water. Gillest, who is retired military and a strong swimmer, says he was in the water for about 10 minutes.The Coast Guard deployed a rescue swimmer and basket into the water, who was able to reach Gillest, put him into the basket, and hoist him up into the chopper. “Not really scared because I know the coast guard guys and they’re awesome,” Gillest said, “Everything went textbook.” 1282
