SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Scorching heat is expected everywhere except the coast in San Diego County Friday and a brutal stretch of temperatures is not expected to relent until the middle of next week, according to the National Weather Service.Building high pressure over the southwestern United States will usher in scorching temperatures for the next five to six days, with the peak of the heat expected Friday through Monday, forecasters said.The NWS issued an excessive heat warning that will be in effect from noon Friday to 9 p.m. Monday in the county valleys, mountains and deserts.LATEST 10NEWS WEATHER FORECASTThe NWS urged residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. The mercury in the western valleys is forecast to top out in the low-to-mid 90s through Wednesday as well, while highs near the foothills will remain in the mid-to-high 90s through at least Thursday.Borrego Springs set a high temperature record on Thursday, according to the NWS. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County health officials have reported 2,867 new COVID-19 infections, a new record, eclipsing the previous one of 2,287 last Friday by nearly 800 cases, marking more than 100,000 total cases in the county since the pandemic began.Friday marked the third consecutive day more than 2,000 new cases were reported, with 2,050 reported Thursday and 2,104 Wednesday. It is also the 11th day with more than 1,000 new cases and the 19th of the last 22 to reach that mark. It is just the fifth time the daily cases have crossed 2,000 -- all of which have come in the past week.The data released Friday, along with 23 deaths, raises the region's cumulative totals to 102,466 confirmed infections and 1,137 deaths.Of 25,002 tests reported Friday, 11 percent returned positive, raising the 14-day average of new cases to 8% -- a record.The number of hospitalizations continued to rise, with 38 people hospitalized and four patients put in intensive care units. The COVID-19- related hospitalizations increased to 965 -- 249 in ICUs. Since the pandemic began, 5,064 or 4.9% of cases have been hospitalized due to coronavirus, 1,098, or 1.1% have been sent to the ICU.The county's hospitals still have 18% of their ICU beds available, down from 21% Thursday. The state now estimates the ICU bed availability in the 11-county Southern California region at 6.2%, down from 7.7% on Thursday.Of the 4,627 people hospitalized in the county, 20% are due to COVID- 19, and 44% of ICU patients. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County students' performance on standardized tests in English and math mostly held steady from the previous year, according to scores released Wednesday by the California Department of Education.The performance of San Diego County students on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress tests generally surpassed that of students statewide, according to the department. The CAASPP tests were administered in the spring to more than 3 million students across the state in grades 3-8 and 11. In San Diego County, 26.45% of the more than 250,000 students who took the tests exceeded the state standard in English, up slightly from 25.79 percent the previous year. According to the state, 30.1% met the standard, down slightly from 30.46% last year; 20.89% ``nearly'' met the standard, down slightly from 20.93% last year; and 22.55% failed to meet it, down from 22.82% the previous year. In math, 23.45% exceeded the standard, 21.6% met it, 24.84% nearly met it and 30.12% failed to meet it. The percentages from the previous year were 22.52%, 21.76%, 25.37% and 30.36%, respectively. Statewide, 22.23% exceeded the standard in English, while 28.64% met it, 22.4% nearly met it and 26.73% failed to meet it. In math, 19.69% exceeded the standard, 20.04% met it, 25.41% nearly met it and 34.86% failed to meet it. The statewide scores were all also moderately improved from the previous year. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond acknowledged the overall improvement, but said he was concerned that gains were less consistent in later grades of 7, 8 and 11, while performance continues to lag among some students of color. ``Disparities between students of color and their white and Asian peers continue from year to year and demonstrate the importance of our priority initiative of closing the achievement gap,'' Thurmond said in a statement. ``Education equity should mean equity for all students and right now, we are not there. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of San Diego will begin enforcing parking regulations again starting Oct. 1 with a two-week grace period before full enforcement Oct. 15.The city temporarily suspended parking enforcement on March 16 following the COVID-19 stay-at-home order. Multiple attempts in the following months to reinforce parking regulations have been thwarted by ongoing shutdown orders.In developing a plan to restart parking enforcement, city staff consulted with several business groups representing communities across San Diego.Starting Thursday, the city will issue written warnings for vehicles parked in violation of:-- Posted street sweeping routes-- Metered parking restrictions-- Curb time limits-- Commercial zonesCitations will continue to be issued for vehicles parked illegally at red, white and blue painted curbs. Drivers are encouraged to follow posted signage when looking for a parking space.Although street sweeping has continued during the public health emergency, the resumption of enforcement will allow city sweepers to sweep debris and dust pollution along the curb line to maintain improved water quality and reduce the potential for flooding as the rainy season approaches.During the two-week grace period, courtesy notices will be distributed to inform residents of the enforcement restart. 1330
