Jurors have found Border Patrol Agent Lonnie Swartz not guilty on the Second Degree Murder charge of shooting through the border fence and killing 16-year-old Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez.Jurors could not come to an agreement on a verdict on the two lesser charges, voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter.If they wish, prosecutors can retry Swartz on the lesser charges only.Friday jurors told Federal Judge Raner Collins they could not agree on a verdict.  The judge told them to continue deliberating. They could choose to convict Swartz on lesser charges of Voluntary Manslaughter or Involuntary Manslaughter.Swartz testified he was protecting himself and other officers from rocks thrown over the border fence by people on the Mexican side trying to interfere with efforts to arrests smugglers who were trying to climb over the fence and into Mexico.In closing statements to the jury, prosecutors said in his two years as a Border Patrol Agent, Swartz had rocks thrown at him six or seven times, and each time had responded by using less lethal weapons. Border Patrol may use items like guns that shoot an irritating pepper.But the night of October 10, 2012, Swartz had been on duty at the DeConcini Port of Entry.  He had only his gun and used it to fire 16 rounds through the fence. Ten shots hit the 16-year-old Mexican teen.Prosecutors say the threat against Swartz and other officers was not severe enough to justify deadly force and that they could have easily removed any threat by taking cover.They say other agents took cover but Swartz was fed up with rockings, wanted to send a message, and did it by calmly walking to the border fence, taking careful aim, and firing 16 shots into Mexico.Defense attorney Sean Chapman told the jury rocks are enough of a danger to justify deadly force and that there is no evidence to conclude Swartz fired out of anger over rock attacks. KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) — The lawyer for the Kenosha police officer who shot Jacob Blake seven times in the back says his client told investigators he thought Blake was trying to abduct one of his own children. Brendan Matthews, the attorney for Officer Rusten Sheskey, told CNN that Sheskey also said Blake was holding a knife as he leaned into the SUV on Aug. 23 and that he opened fire because Blake “twisted his body toward” him. The Kenosha News reports that Blake's uncle, Justin Blake, said Saturday that the claim Blake was trying to kidnap his own child is "Gaslighting. JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A squirrel found in Morrison, Colorado, on July 11 tested positive for the bubonic plague.This is the first known case of the plague in the county this year, according to Jefferson County Public Health. It's not an uncommon sickness to see in rodents year to year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, scientists believe the plague bacteria circulates in low rates of rodent populations regularly.The department did not release any other information on the animal.Both humans and household animals can become infected with the plague without proper precautions.Humans may become sick with the plague through bites from infected fleas, a cough from an infected animal, or direct contact — such as a bite — with the blood or tissue of an infected animal, according to the health department.Dogs and cats are also susceptible to the plague, though cats are more vulnerable to it. While dogs may pick up and carry plague-infected rodent fleas, cats can contract the plague from flea bites and can die without treatment and antibiotics. If you believe your pet is sick, call your veterinarian. Jefferson County Public Health also recommends talking to your vet about flea prevention if you live near wild animals, including prairie dog colonies.Symptoms of the plague include:· Sudden onset of high fever· Chills· Headache· Nausea· Extreme pain and swelling of lymph nodes, within two to seven days after exposureIt can be treated with antibiotics when diagnosed early. On May 1 of this year, there were almost 40 percent fewer open jobs listed compared to May 1, 2019.The job market has shown positive signs in the last few months, with increases in the number of open jobs actively recruiting in June and July, according to Indeed.
