EMERSON, Iowa — While many in Southwest Iowa saw the strongest of Friday's thunderstorm, one Emerson couple watched a funnel cloud spin from the cloud outside their home.Larry and Marlene Skalberg, who live right just east of Emerson, have lived in their house for 39 years. They've experienced storms throughout the years but never saw one up close like Friday's storm that created a funnel cloud right outside their front door. "It was just neat to watch it and how it formed and then how it started to get smaller and then it just disappeared," said Marlene. Marlene said she got an alert on her phone about a tornado warning that advised people in the area to take cover, as northeastern Mills County was under tornado warning for part of the afternoon. She started heading towards the basement, but her husband Larry grabbed a chair, a beer and headed for the front lawn."He was like, 'look! A tornado! Go out on the lawn and take pictures!' So there I am out on the lawn just taking pictures and I'm like, 'what if the tail just comes down and takes?' " said Marlene.Larry wasn't worried. He said he enjoys watching storms brew and has experienced several tornadoes in Iowa, Oklahoma and Kansas. "I like to watch storms coming in and the clouds forming. I always have since I was a little kid," said Larry. "I enjoy storms. But if the funnel cloud had touched the hill...well that's a different story." 1436

It was the most books ever donated by the station in the annual “If You Give a Child a Book…” campaign, and nearly twice as many as last year, said Community Outreach & PR Manager Patty Thompson.Kindergartners and first graders at Live Oak Elementary in Fallbrook and Farr Avenue Elementary in Escondido lined up to greet Clifford and pick out a book of their own. Facebook users briefly reported widespread issues with the social media site Thursday afternoon, according to Down Detector, a website that crowdsources telecommunication and social media outages.Down Detector reported that it received more than 6,300 reports of problems on Facebook at about 2 p.m. Thursday. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — A firefighter was injured Wednesday when a roof collapsed on him while battling a blaze at a North County strip mall.Crews responded to the strip mall at 945 W. Valley Parkway just before 3:20 p.m., according to Escondido Fire Department. One engine arrived to the end unit of the mall fully engulfed in flames and extending into a neighboring business, EFD said.It's not clear how the fire started. The fire appears to have originated in a shoe repair and garment cleaner business, according to Google Maps images. The business sits next door to a gun and ammo business.One firefighter was injured in the blaze when part of a roof collapsed, according to EFD. He was taken to Palomar Medical Center for treatment. EFD didn't reveal the extent of the firefighter's injuries.EFD added that one civilian had minor smoke inhalation and refused treatment at the scene. 899

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- It's official, a revamp is coming to the Escondido Country Club. The Escondido City Council voted 3-2 Wednesday night. This means they will move forward with "The Villages" development on the 109 acres of former Escondido Country Club land.The country club was closed years ago when purchased by a new owner with plans to build 380 homes.
