SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The tight race between two democrats to become San Diego's next mayor is seeing an increase in attacks, less than four weeks before the election.Democrats Todd Gloria and Barbara Bry have both said they were not involved with messages that have gone out over the last few days. On Wednesday, Barbara Bry called a news conference Wednesday in response to two mailers she said were deceptive — one sent to Democrats made her out to be the Republican choice for mayor, while the other, sent to Republicans, made her out to be very liberal. "I think these mailers are very deceptive, they do not explain who I am as a person, they were done in a deceitful way to purposely deceive voters about who I am," she said. Both mailers appeared to be in support of Bry, with quotes or images from well-known public local officials. But a closer look shows that a committee that supports Todd Gloria paid for the ads. Attorney Gil Cabrera, the principal for Neighbors for Housing Solutions Supporting Todd Gloria, which sent the mailers, says their purpose is to show that Bry is trying to be different things to different voters."The one thing she hasn't said is that any of the quotes are inaccurate or any of the policy positions are inaccurate, which is, I think, interesting," he said. A spokesman for Gloria says the candidate is not legally allowed to coordinate with those mailers and has not done so. Meanwhile, Gloria is taking attacks from conservative radio host Carl DeMaio over his recent support of a bill that doesn't automatically force someone to register a sex offender in certain circumstances after sex with a minor - meant to end discrimination against LGBTQ individuals.Demaio said he did it on his own and said he has not endorsed Bry. Bry said her campaign had nothing to do with the texts and disagreed with Gloria's vote on the bill, Senate Bill 145.Political Analyst John Dadian said denouncing an ad would be a victory for an opponent. "You're never going to agree with your opponent, so that's why she's saying I'm not going to denounce it, you go talk to Carl DeMaio," he said. "And then on the other side of the coin, Todd Gloria is doing the exact same thing."The race is in a dead heat, according to the ABC 10News/Union-Tribune scientific poll released this week. New renderings show the schools intentions of building a "‘grand entrance" to attract more students and people from San Diego. A 3,000 seat amphitheater, a six-building student center with retail and restaurants are just some of the things showcased in the new plans. “There is hardly a thing that exists in the Gaslamp or Balboa that doesn’t exist here,” said UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla on the renderings. UCSD believes public transportation that’s being built near and on-campus will help with the future influx of people they want checking out their amenities. The blue line trolley and the three stations around the area are forecasted to be completed by 2021. “We want to be one more destination to the San Diego experience,” added Khosla, “we’re gonna change this campus to have these things so students can hang out and the community will come here to hang out too.” The price tag is still being worked out but it’s expected to cost well into the hundreds of millions of dollars. 1100

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Zoo Thursday called for action against recent moves aimed at weakening the Endangered Species Act.Monday, the Trump Administration moved to lessen protections established in the act. The moves effectively end blanket protections for animals newly classified as threatened and now allow economic cost to be taken into account when deciding whether a species must be protected."We are concerned that the changes to the Endangered Species Act will make it more difficult for us to protect species across the world for future generations," San Diego Zoo tweeted. "We have a rich diversity of unique species, many of whom find refuge in San Diego county. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The threat of President Trump shutting down the southern border is causing widespread concerns in San Diego and Tijuana. Ev Meade is the director of USD's Transborder Institute. He says the impact on specific industries would be severe. "Think about the auto industry. You can't build a car in the United States or Canada right now without the part of the supply chain that's in Mexico. It's just fatal to shut that down," said Meade. He says even if the president doesn't close the border, the threat alone is damaging. "If you think about agriculture, on the other hand, Mexico is the biggest buyer of a long list of agricultural products, even if it doesn't happen, just the uncertainty that is cast over the market by doing that hurts that, it tells people we got to find another supply because we don't want to have empty shelves," said Meade. This weekend, President Trump announced he was cutting off funding to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. He also blamed Mexico for not doing enough to stop the flow of asylum seekers making their way north to the United States. Meade says cutting off aid to Central American countries will only lead to more migrants fleeing. "If you look at where it goes to, it goes to things like training the security forces, and training their immigration enforcement and strengthening judicial systems. There's some food and public health, and other things that are covered by it, but it's some real basic institutions in these societies that are pretty fragile to begin with and pulling that funding I think, I don't know anyone who thinks it's going to make them stronger, and if they're not stronger, it's not going to alleviate the pressure for people to leave," said Meade. She said cutting aid and closing the border might be a good idea."I think they need to manage their own governments and own borders, and we're not the bank of the world. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- There are more concerns about vacation rentals in the Bankers Hill area, following action taken by the City Attorney’s office to shut down what they called a COVID party Airbnb on 2nd Avenue.The civil enforcement action cited concerns over gatherings during coronavirus-related restrictions and numerous other violations, from lack of permits to not obtaining proper tax licenses. According to the complaint the homeowner David Contreras Curiel, did not pay required taxes or fees to operate a vacation rental. It also alleges Curiel illegally made numerous renovations to the home.“From packing a party house during a pandemic to illegally renovating an entire property, the conduct of the defendants in this case is egregious and unacceptable,” City Attorney Mara Elliott said in a news release Friday.On Monday, ABC 10News spoke to a neighbor who lives next to another Airbnb rental on 3rd Avenue. Records show the rental is also owned by David Curiel. The home is listed as The Alfred Mansion on Airbnb’s website.“It’s disruptive every weekend,” one neighbor told ABC 10News. He did not want to be identified, but he said the parties picked up at The Alfred Mansion a few months ago.“Two weekends ago, there was a wedding there with at least 40 people. Nobody had a mask on,” the neighbor said. He added that he has made several complaints to police and the City of San Diego, but nothing had been done. He also had not heard anything from Airbnb regarding his concerns.Curiel did not return requests for comment. Early Monday afternoon, ABC 10News contacted Alex Mendez, the person who helps manage the property and deal with guests.On Monday evening, Mendez called the allegations against the Airbnb properties “unwarranted.”Regarding the city action taken against The Ashley, Mendez said that he and the owner were willing to work with the city. When he asked to reschedule a meeting with code enforcement a couple months ago due to Curiel’s travels, Mendez said the city was not willing to be flexible.Instead of a code enforcement officer calling him back, someone from the City Attorney’s office contacted him, Mendez said.He and Curiel were both caught off guard by the city’s allegations.“We, by no means, have a party house. The house rules are very strict,” Mendez said.Mendez said he has been willing to work with any neighbors who have had issues with the Airbnb properties. “We’re very responsible,” he said, adding that it is also not fair for “neighbors to complain any time there’s any little noise and mischaracterize it.”A spokesperson for the City Attorney’s office could not say whether or not the property on 3rd Avenue was being investigated, but told ABC 10News that the case against The Ashley could affect the other rentals owned by Curiel.“If granted, our injunctive relief would apply to any properties within the county owned by Mr. Curiel that have one or more of the same-type violations that are listed in our complaint,” a spokesperson said.Airbnb has not responded to this latest allegation, but previously told ABC 10News that hosts are not allowed to authorize parties where current public health orders prohibit gatherings, like in San Diego County. 3217
