Padilla, who represents Chula Vista's District 3, was admitted at UCSD Thornton Hospital ICU last Thursday after experiencing difficulty breathing associated with COVID-19. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cathedral Catholic High School students took part in a protest Tuesday against a ban on skirts as uniform options for girls. Officials at the Carmel Valley school changed the dress code Friday for the 2019-2020 school year. CCHS said it would ban the uniform skirts, citing multiple detentions based on enforcement. Female students will have the option to wear pants, capri pants, or Bermuda shorts, the school said. “By removing the option for girls to wear skirts at a Catholic school not only demeans me as a female, but makes me wonder if we are moving towards a gender neutral society. I believe this is sexist, patriarchal and sexualizes the female students unnecessarily,” said freshman student Rachel Donaldson. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border officials seized nearly two tons of drugs valued at millions of dollars at San Diego and Imperial Valley ports of entry last weekend.Between June 14 and June 16, Customs and Border Protection says more than 2,638 pounds of marijuana, 1093 pounds of methamphetamine, and five pounds of heroin were seized after being discovered inside doors, flooring, and other areas of vehicles and a tractor-trailer.In one instance, agents at the Calexico Port of Entry stopped a 34-year-old driver on Friday and referred the driver to a secondary inspection. There, canine agents made a positive detection and the port's imaging system discovered anomalies inside the vehicles flooring.Agents uncovered 40 packages of methamphetamine hidden in the vehicle.The same day, a tractor-trailer was stopped at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, arriving from Mexico with a shipment listed as "watermelons and cactus." An officer referred the driver to a secondary inspection, where a canine officer alerted agents to a positive detection in pallets of watermelons.Agents found 311 packages of marijuana, worth an estimated ,557,000, intermixed with the fruit.During another incident on June 16, agents at the San Ysidro Port of Entry stopped a 35-year-old man where a secondary inspection revealed 86 packages of methamphetamine, with a street value of 3,700.All drivers were turned over to Homeland Security agents for processing and all vehicles and narcotics were seized by CBP. 1494

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Conservationists planted dozens of Short-leaved Liveforever in a secret location Friday in an effort to help the succulent survive, according to San Diego Zoo Global Plant Division and the Chaparral Conservancy.The reason for the secrecy was due to the same two reasons the plant is endangered: Illegal harvesting and vandalism. David Hogan, Director of Chaparral Conservancy, lent seeds from an area in Torrey Pines to San Diego Zoo Global, which cultivated the plants for two years.Hogan grew up in San Diego and says his earliest memories are toddling around in nature. He says he's been keeping a close eye on these tiny plants for years, and is now thankful for the handful of grants from various agencies to make reintroducing Liveforever possible.The plant gets its name from its life cycle, sprouting leaves in the summer, and dying down to its root in the winter.Just off the trail, two yellow measuring tapes sat straight as arrows, creating a grid for the Zoo Global team to note where they planted root shafts. "[They're] pretty tiny; the only way we're going to find them is from these measurements," Joyce Maschinski, Vice President of Science and Conservation with Zoo Global said.She wasn't kidding. Looking down, the tiny plant blends right into the rocks surrounding it. Only a trained eye and careful steps keep these conservationists from stepping on the precious wildlife.Hogan said the Liveforever would grow about three times its size in a good year. In the summer, they can bloom beautiful flowers. That's part of the draw for illegal harvesters who sell the plants in Asia.Conservationists used tweezers to hold the roots in just the right place as they filled the marker-sized hole and watered the plants."Everybody knows that it's kinda hard to kill a succulent so they should be able to do well as long as we get them in there, in the right place to grow, and give them some water," Research Assistant with Zoo Global, Joe Davitt, said.Altogether they planted 46 root shafts across two locations."They're nowhere near as appealing to a lot of people as a, say, a baby polar bear or a giraffe, but they're just as equally important. They're part of the incredible biodiversity of life on earth," Hogan said.The Liveforever only grows in five places on Earth, between La Jolla, Carmel Valley and Del Mar, Hogan said."Sometimes it's appealing to go out onto the cliffs to get a better shot for the camera or the ocean or the sunset, but that's unfortunately where a lot of these really rare and endangered animals and plants live," Hogan said, encouraging people to stay on the trails."A lot of us who work with conservation connect with nature as home; this is where we go for comfort, this is where we feel the most connected with the rest of the world," he said. 2817

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Birch Aquarium has opened a new exhibit showcasing one of the sea's most beautiful creatures in one of the world's largest habitats for the animal.The aquarium's new permanent exhibition "Seadragons and Seahorses" featuring Weedy and Leafy seadragons and several species of seahorses and pipefish.At the center of the exhibit will sit one of the world's largest seadragon habitats in the world, measuring 18 feet wide, 9 feet tall and containing 5,375 gallons of water, according to the aquarium.The exhibit takes guests into the lives of seadragons and seahorses, showcasing the sea life in a habitat designed to create the ideal environment for them to breed. Guests will learn how to observe the animals like scientists, catch distinguishing features, and identify courting and mating behaviors.The exhibit also gives visitors a peek into the Birch Aquariums Husbandry Team working to ensure the species thrives.
