SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Monday afternoon, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department tweeted that convicted sex offender Cary Jay Smith has left San Diego County. The tweet added, “It is always our goal to keep our communities safe.”Smith had been staying at a motel around the 78 corridor which caused concern for North County community leaders. “I just don't feel good about this situation,” said Melanie Burkholder, candidate for CA State Assembly's 76th District. “This is a very sick individual. He does not need to be roaming the streets,” she said Monday morning.The Orange County District Attorney's Office says Smith claims to have killed three boys and molested 200 others.San Diego County Undersheriff Mike Barnett spoke to ABC10 News on Sunday night. “He liked to be referred to while he was in the state mental hospital as Mr. RTK, which is rape, torture, kill,” he said.It was last Tuesday when he said the CA Department of State Hospitals released Smith from Coalinga psychiatric facility without any restrictions under Megan's law, meaning he is not required to register as a sex offender.Deputies say he's served his time and is free to go where he wants.Before arriving in San Diego, the 59-year-old went to Orange, Corona and Lake Elsinore which sparked outrage in Los Angeles. In an effort to avoid any violence, San Diego deputies did not share his exact location but offered reassurance he was under 24-7 monitoring.The Orange County District Attorney's Office said Monday that its waiting for answers from the Governor’s Office as to why the state released him from the hospital and why the CA Attorney General's Office reportedly revoked his sex offender registration requirement in 2005.Monday, the Attorney General's Office referred ABC10 News to the Department of State Hospitals which said that it couldn't release information because of patient privacy laws. 1889

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nearly one week after Election Day and with state Assemblyman Todd Gloria holding a comfortable lead, City Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry conceded in the race for San Diego mayor.As of Nov. 9 vote totals, Gloria was leading Bry 56% to 46%.During a virtual press conference on Monday, Bry said she called Gloria the day before and offered her congratulations. Regarding the campaign, Bry said she felt voters were misled by the media and political ads from the opposition.Bry said, "I want to congratulate Todd Gloria as the next mayor of San Diego. He and I spoke by phone yesterday, and I offered him my congratulations. But for the next few years, our city faces many challenges because of COVID-19, and Mr. Gloria will have a tough job. Thousands of San Diegans are unemployed through no fault of their own and city revenues are declining."She added, "I wish those issues could have been more central to the mayoral campaign. We certainly tried to make them the focus of our communications. Unfortunately, interest groups supporting my opponent took a different approach.Perhaps inspired by the ‘fake news’ rhetoric coming out of Washington, they spent over million on TV commercials and mailers cynically designed to fool voters into thinking they were sponsored by our campaign. In times past, dishonest advertising of that sort would have been called out by responsible journalists, and voters would have been made aware of these cynical tactics. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Peeps are traditionally a sign of Spring: brightly colored marshmallow candy that’s front and center on store shelves.Long after Easter, Peeps, made by the Just Born company, appear to stay fresh as ever, seemingly indestructible in their pastel packages.In 2002, 10News put the durability of the everlasting marshmallows to the test. Reporter Herb Cawthorne, photographer Richard Klein and producer Revelle Anderson put Peeps on camera.The inspiration was simple, according to Klein. “We were sitting around talking about the purpose behind the Peep,” Klein said.That led to an elaborate shoot at San Diego locations. The candy was shot, run over, thrown off a five-story tower, and stomped with a crane."During the entire shoot I chewed on a Peep. It never got smaller. I wondered how we ate them as kids,” Cawthorne told 10News in 2018.The 2002 video shows only children eating the Peeps.Adults may want to take notice. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person was injured late Friday after a stabbing near Fox Canyon in eastern San Diego.A 25-year-old man was with two other people in the 4900 block of Auburn Dr. just after 10 p.m. when an unknown suspect walked up to the group and got in an argument with the victim, San Diego Police said.The argument escalated, ending with the suspect stabbing the victim multiple times in the left side of his body, police said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Nearly 6,000 San Diego workers have reportedly been laid off amid the coronavirus outbreak, but the actual number could be 60 times higher, according to officials at the San Diego Workforce Partnership. The agency estimates there are at least 350,000 San Diego workers at risk of losing their jobs, the majority of them in service sectors like hotels, restaurants and retail, where there is no option to work from home. However, the state has eliminated the 60-day public layoff notification requirement amid the outbreak, so it is unclear how many people are no longer working. It is focusing on finding employers who have a need today, such as those in delivery, transportation and logistics. It is also working with Amazon to set up mobile job expos.
