A Minnesota school security guard admitted to authorities on Wednesday that he lied about an active shooting after he accidently shot himself, St. Paul, Minnesota police said in a statement The department reported that Brent Patrick Ahlers, 25, was arrested for filing a false police report. St. Paul Police said that Ahlers told investigators that he was handling his gun when it accidently discharged, sending a bullet through his shoulder. He originally claimed that while working a guard shift at St. Catherine University that he was shot in the woods by a suspect. St. Paul Police said that the incident tied down vast resources, including 55 officers, four canines and a Minnesota State Patrol aircraft. “Last night I was talking to you about an incident that shocked the community,” Sgt. A mother in Mesa, Arizona is voicing concern after her child's 4th-grade teacher changed words in the Declaration of Independence, and made the students recite the altered version in class.The teacher at Salk Elementary school crossed out the words "man" and substituted it with "human".The mother, Elizabeth Vaillencourt said the teacher's goal may have been to include women as well, but she went too far in altering a historical document.When Vaillencourt took this concern to school officials, she was initially told she had "hurt the teacher's feelings" by posting about it on social media.The school reacted by removing Vaillencourt's child from that teacher's classroom, and placing them under a different teacher.On Wednesday, Vaillencourt said the superintendent's office contacted her to tell her what the teacher did was against school policy.A Mesa Public Schools spokeswoman says they have policies in place when it comes to school ceremonies which includes reciting the Declaration of Independence. 1030

A video appears to show a Westland Police Officer using a Taser on a man as he is holding his two-month-old baby. The incident happened on Friday night where neighbors were having a barbecue. Witnesses said police arrived because of a call about a fight. “We were just barbecuing, and we saw the cops come up,” neighbor Kelvin Williams said. “They came up and asked us who was fighting. We were like, ‘You got the wrong house.’”Williams said they didn’t understand what the officers meant. “At that point, my friend Ray got a little agitated like you’re coming over to my house, my property and you're asking me about something I don’t know about,” Williams said. According to witnesses, Ray Brown then began to argue with officers. Williams said that is when he decided to record video on his cell phone. In the video, officers told Brown was going to be arrested, then ordered Brown's son to be taken away from the scene. “That’s my child. He can be exactly where he’s at. Give me my child. Give me my child,” Brown said. Officers then crowd into Brown with a taser out. Nichole Skidmore, Brown’s girlfriend, and mother of two-month-old Christopher tried to take the baby.It appears in the video that Brown was still holding Christopher and in the process of passing him to Skidmore when officers deployed a Taser. “I had to catch the baby," Skidmore said. "I was in the street talking with the cops. I had to come over. The taser is on this side of him, and the baby is over here. As soon as they start tasing him the baby flew out of his hands and I had to grab him, or he would have fell.”Brown was arrested and placed in custody soon after that. According to a Facebook post by the Westland Police Community Partnership, Brown attempted to grab his child only after learning he would be arrested. The department says that officers chose to deploy a Taser due to the "close quarters," and that the child was also in the hands of the mother at the time the Taser was used.The Community Partnership also stated that a "thorough internal investigation" would be conducted.  2158

A University of Florida research unit killed more than 150 birds over the past 10 years, the Gainesville Sun reported, citing U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service documents.The paper says that of the birds killed at the Plant Science Research and Education Unit, 47 were sandhill cranes and 105 were ring-billed gulls.While the Florida sandhill crane isn't considered endangered, it is a threatened species according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.Director of the unit, Jim Boyer, told the Sun the cranes and gulls had damaged or eaten crops grown for research, including high-value peanuts part of a breeding study.The unit says it has since decided to use non-lethal means to protect crops from cranes. 732

A police officer, a doctor and a pharmaceutical assistant were killed after a Monday afternoon shooting at Chicago's Mercy Hospital, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said.The shooting was a domestic incident, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson said.
