Just days after the mass shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, a makeshift memorial with flowers and stuffed animals continues to grow. But that’s not the only sign of support arriving in this small town east of San Antonio.Mary Beth Fisk is the CEO of a San Antonio-based counseling and education non-profit called The Ecumenical Center. She and her team have been on the ground since Sunday night to provide counseling to victims and family member, particularly children.“Everybody’s grief journey is unique to them,” Fisk said. “It’s important to have someone who’s trained to walk through this complicated grief process with these families.”Fisk was nearby near the makeshift memorial on Tuesday, around for anyone who may need to talk. While Fisk spends time next to the flowers at the corner outside the church, across the street on another corner Donna Watkins was setting up a table of stuffed animals she brought with her from her home in Corpus Christi.Watkins is with the Homicide Survivors Support Group. She says she lost her brother decades ago and that gives her a unique perspective from which to assist.“It’s the most traumatic, worst thing that a family can ever go through. There is no way that unless you have walked through their shoes that you know where they’re coming from.”Up the road about 15 miles is the small, one-room St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. One of its 27 congregants is Paula Reinecke.  They were still in church services in the nearby town of Adkins this Sunday when they heard the sirens heading to the scene in Sutherland Springs.Almost immediately, she and her husband, having both recently finished culinary school and having assisted in Hurricane Harvey at similar events, decided to put their skills to use.“In Texas, we barbecue,” Reinecke said. “It’s a comfort food here.”They—and their newly-formed organization they call “Smokin’ Angels BBQ Ministry"—are hosting a barbecue benefit event this Saturday on the grounds of the church. They posted about the event on Facebook Sunday night, and, as Reinecke said, overnight “it kind of exploded.”They’re already gotten hundreds of calls, texts, and Facebook messages with offers of money, barbecue pits, even a walk-in cooler for the weekend; not to mention they’ve already received over 3,000 pounds of pork.“Being Texans, we jump in and save each others’ backs. We jump in when we know we’re needed.”She says that’s what Texans do in the face of evil.“It makes my heart smile.” 2515

James Harvey has owned a moving company for the past 10 years. He says every summer it’s the same: he sees a spike in business with more people moving. This summer, however, is different he’s says because of COVID-19.“It’s an emotional time,” said Harvey, owner of Around the Clock Movers and Havana Truck Rentals. “It’s hard not to feel bad for a lot of people.”Paperwork is piling up as Harvey tries to meet the demand for his customers that often tell him their reasons for relocating.“Before people were moving for fun or moving to experience new things,” he said. “Now it’s for economics.”What Harvey is experiencing is happening across the country.A new study by the Pew Research Center shows one in every five American adults moved due to COVID-19 or know someone who did.“Everything going on is highly emotional right now,” said real estate expert Lauren Feldesman with Compass.Feldesman has helped many people move out of the early epicenter of this pandemic -- New York City. With more people escaping big city living during this crisis, Feldesman says just looking at properties now is a lot more involved. She added there’s also a lot less tolerance for any potential health risks.“Even just today I had somebody that had to cancel the showing because they said that they just flew here two days ago from a high-risk state,” she said. “I was like, ‘I’m sorry. I can’t show you the property.’”These moves are impacting more than just those moving. With so many Americans changing their address, it’s changing property prices across the country, some at historic rates, according to real estate tracker Zumper. There’s a lot of good people that don’t deserve to be going through these situationsWhile Harvey has mixed emotions about helping people move to help reduce their risk of contracting the virus he also understands the importance of moving out and moving on. 1881

JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV) -- The threat of wildfires in Julian may be going down. SDG&E is installing underground power lines to help mitigate the fire risk. The project is also expected to keep critical facilities open during pre-emptive power outages. Not only will the work help prevent fires, it may also help keep power running when Santa Ana winds start picking up. Crews were hard at work Tuesday putting underground power lines near State Route 78 in Julian. RELATED: City of San Diego moves forward with undergrounding more power linesThe project is part of SDG&E’s effort to reduce the risk of wildfires and shutting down power during windy weather. It will help keep the power running to places like Julian’s schools, post office, library and their Cal Fire station. Phase one of the project is being done along Cape Horn Avenue. Many homes and facilities have lost power there during shutoffs in the past. While residents in Julian were happy about the changes, they know it won’t happen overnight. RELATED: Map: City of San Diego underground utility lines“To put all those lines underground is gonna be a major undertaking,” said resident Michael Lang. Phase two of the project will add underground lines along the 78. Currently, there is no timeline on when the project will begin. 1308

Jury President Cate Blanchett, left, and jury member Matt Dillon, right, talk to each other as they wait for the start of the opening ceremony of the 77th edition of the Venice Film Festival at the Venice Lido, Italy, Wednesday, Sep. 2, 2020. The Venice Film Festival will go from Sept. 2 through Sept. 12. Italy was among the countries hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic, and the festival will serve as a celebration of its re-opening and a sign that the film world, largely on pause since March, is coming back as well. Just because you're bankrupt doesn't mean you don't need a hand during the holiday season.Toys R Us, which filed for bankruptcy on Monday night, announced Thursday that it is looking to fill at least 13,000 positions nationwide for the upcoming holiday season. The toy retailer didn't give the total number of seasonal workers it plans to hire, but said it is looking for 3,800 workers in the New York area, 2,400 in greater Los Angeles as well as 2,400 at a warehouse in Groveport, Ohio that is run by DHL. It is also looking for about 1,000 workers each in the Philadelphia, Chicago and Boston markets as well as 900 work at home call center employees.Hiring workers just for the holidays will be harder for retailers this year since unemployment at at 4.4%, near a 16-year low. There are currently a record number of unfilled job openings according to Labor Department statistics. To fill the jobs in the current environment, Toys R Us has sweetened its pay package to offer employees weekend pay rates on peak holiday shopping days, as well as additional employee discounts said spokesman Joseph Contrino.Earlier this week Walmart, the nation's largest private sector employer, said that instead of hiring seasonal employees this year it will give?its existing part-time employees more hours.Toys R Us has nearly 1,000 Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores across the United States and Canada, and filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday. Its employees will continue to be paid and its stores will remain open during the reorganization. The company said it has about 65,000 employees worldwide. 1642
