ALPINE (CNS) - A 7-year old tiger at Alpine's Lions Tigers & Bears animal rescue facility died of injuries inflicted by a fellow tiger, it was announced Tuesday.Maverick suffered fatal injuries after he and the other tiger -- Moka - - were accidentally allowed to come into contact with one another on Monday. The animals were living in separate enclosures, according to Lions Tigers & Bears founder Bobbi Brink, who said no staff or visitors were harmed.The staff veterinarian assessed both animals afterward. Moka has scratches, but no serious injuries."This was a human error, and one we're so deeply heartbroken about," Brink said. "When caring for a 400-plus-pound apex predator, layered safety measures must be established, and this is exactly what we've implemented at our accredited sanctuary since our founding."Unfortunately, one of our safety measures was mistakenly missed, and because these magnificent, massive animals are wild, their reactions to their surroundings -- especially new situations -- are unpredictable," she said.According to Brink, the nonprofit organization regularly conducts staff safety trainings, including one on emergency protocols last weekend. She said the protocols will be reviewed extensively this week.Maverick was rescued on April 20, 2014, at 9 months old. He was born in captivity and purchased illegally by someone who did not have the proper licensing to own an exotic animal. California Fish & Wildlife personnel seized Maverick and reached out to Lions Tigers & Bears to provide him with a home."There is an inherent risk when keeping apex predators in captivity, and we would like nothing more than to see an end to this, but until then, and as long as our sanctuary is needed, we will continue to be there for these animals in need," Brink said. "Maverick, we will miss your friendly chuffs and curious, fun-loving spirit. Rest easy our sweet boy, run free, and keep on swimming." 1956

Academy Award-nominated actress and director Sondra Locke, whose body of work included multiple collaborations with Clint Eastwood, has died. She was 74.Locke died in November at her home in Los Angeles, according to a death certificate obtained by CNN.She had been battling bone and breast cancer.Locke made her film debut in 1968's "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter" opposite Alan Arkin. Her performance earned her an Oscar nomination.She'd go on to star in several more films, including a notable stretch of movies alongside Eastwood. According to a new survey released by the United States Department of Education, 94 percent of teachers said they spent their own money on classroom supplies during the 2014-2015 school year, and the average amount spent was 9.Early childhood education teacher Natalie Soto-Mehle says one of the things she loves most about the three and four-year-olds who make up her class at Trevista Elementary School in Denver is their “energy and joy for life.”So she chooses to do all she can to make their day as engaging as possible.“We might want some sparkly pencils to make it a little bit more interesting,” she said, adding that she’d be buying these types of things with her own money.She acknowledges that a lot of what she buys wouldn’t be considered “essential” by many people, but they’re ways that she can make the experience better for her students.“We have a great library, and I do use it, but I want the books for future use so I’ll buy the books that I want,” she said.Soto-Mehle says she probably buys over ,000 worth of extra supplies for her students each year. She can even remember a few years that hit the ,000 mark.But she just chalks it up to being a teacher.“It’s part of what you do,” she said.Does it surprise Soto-Mehle that 94 percent of teachers pay for supplies out of their pocket? Although four people were killed, and 10 others were wounded by a gunman targeting a Northern California elementary school on Tuesday, authorities said the incident could have been more tragic.According to Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston, when school administrators heard gunshots ringing out nearly 1/4 mile from the school, the school immediately went into lockdown mode without the prompting of police. This, Johnston said, prevented an even worse tragedy at the school.“The shooter took his vehicle and rammed their fence and gate and entered the (school) grounds on foot with a semi-automatic rifle,” Johnston said. “It appears he couldn’t make access to the room and he gave up and reentered the vehicle.”Johnston confirmed that no children from the school were killed, but one was wounded. Johnston said that after being thwarted at the school, he went on a rampage in the community, as there were seven different shooting locations throughout Rancho Tehama.The Corning Union School District commended the effort of its employees. "School staff is commended for their courageous and professional response to this terrible incident.
