A Memphis woman wants answers after getting a nearly ,000 dollar bill from Memphis Light, Gas and Water.Florence Ford said the utility insisted the astronomical amount is no mistake.They told her a water leak led to the 5-figure bill, but Ford doesn't think MLGW's story is adding up.The 60-year-old brings in just enough every month from disability checks to pay her rent and insurance costs."I had four blood clots, I’ve got nerve damage on the right side and I had a stroke," she said.So, when Ford opened up her bill late January for ,423, she was floored.Her normally bill had skyrocketed to ,995 for water alone, just for one month."What the hell? If I’m on a fixed income, how can I pay a ,000 water bill?" she said.Ford called MLGW and said she was told the massive bill was due to a water leak on her property, and that she’d need a plumber to fix it."Some pipe or something had come loose and they took care of it," she said.According to Ford's bill, her water usage during the month of December was 4,983 CCFs (centum cubic feet). That’s close to 4 million gallons, which is enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool almost six times.MLGW told Ford a representative called her and left a note on her door, but she said before getting that bill, no one from the utility ever reached out to tell her there was a problem."Didn’t call, didn’t leave a voicemail, said they left a note on the door. A mother in Clarksville, Tennessee has been charged after the death of her 4-month-old daughter.Officials said they responded to a home in the 200 block of Orleans Drive after 11:30 a.m. Saturday on a call of an unresponsive child.Officers found the 4-month-old not breathing. They performed CPR, and the baby was taken to Tennova Hospital where she failed to regain consciousness and passed away.Detectives investigated the infant’s death leading to a criminal homicide charge against the baby’s mother, 25-year-old Sarah Danielle Scribner.A witness, identified in a police affidavit as Aeriel Shiraef, told authorities Scribner called her and said she'd done something bad. Scribner allegedly told Shiraef she had stopped the baby from crying by putting her hand over the infant's mouth. She added the infant was no longer breathing.Scribner was booked into the Montgomery County Jail.  916

A trip to the grocery store can be a difficult and stressful outing for a senior. So, two high schoolers from Maryland jumped in to help their own neighbors, and now their idea is spreading across the nation.The students, just 15 and 16 years old, are coordinating hundreds of free grocery deliveries for seniors in need during the pandemic.“We’ve learned there’s a huge problem, unfortunately, when it comes to senior hunger,” said Matthew Casertano.Casertano and his friend, Dhruv Pai, started by making grocery deliveries to their own grandparents.“I saw the fear in their eyes every time they went to the grocery store,” said Pai. “There was a trade-off they had to make between the necessities and their personal safety that I wanted to avoid at all costs.”“We knew we couldn’t rely on the goodwill of people wearing masks, keeping social distancing, so we had to do the shopping,” said Casertano.Then, one afternoon on the carpool ride home, the teens had an idea. “We thought, ‘What about people who don’t have grandchildren who can’t do the shopping for them?’” said Casertano.That’s when they started Teens Helping Seniors, where any senior in need can email a grocery list for teens to pick up at the store.“We will coordinate a volunteer in their area who can service that request in a one to two-day turnaround,” said Pai.The teens do all the shopping, and then drop off and sanitize each order. It’s a simple favor that means so much to those they help.“I thank you, and I thank God for you, for making such a unique individual as every human being is, but you’re showing it, you’re showing your heart,” said Marie Cavill, a senior who fractured her back during the pandemic. Cavill has physically been unable to leave her home, but she is also frightened to go out and risk a possible COVID-19 exposure.The teens said they were shocked by how many volunteers this program now has. They have 26 chapters in the United States and one chapter in Canada, with more than 600 volunteers.
