SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of Clairemont neighbors attended a public hearing Wednesday to learn why their neighborhood was picked for a new homeless housing project.A developer wants to convert former office space on 5858 Mt. Alifan Drive into roughly 50 apartments for the homeless. The location is near the Vons shopping plaza.“It’s just not acceptable. I’m not against homeless shelters by any means but this is not the proper location,” said Mark Bromley. He believes the site is too close to homes and schools.San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate said the developer has not yet applied for a permit to start the project. Cate told 10News he can’t give his opinion on the project in case the issue goes before the Council.Organizers shut down the planned open house after more than 200 people attended due to possible fire code violations given the size of the crowd.Another informational meeting is tentatively scheduled for next Tuesday at a larger location. 973

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Drone video of a Pacific Beach man's search and rescue of his blind pet chameleon plays out like the perfect Hollywood action sequence.Vince Kay Vera says his pet chameleon, "Pete," is temporarily blind due to an infection. "He doesn't normally act like this. He's usually hunting, and hiding, and cruising, but right now he's just roaming aimlessly because he can't see," Vera says.RELATED: Blind San Diego puppy, guide sibling capture hearts around the globeBut that temporary struggle didn't stop the sly Pete from escaping his outdoor enclosure and ending up on the roof of Vera's Pacific Beach condo."So that's all he wants to do all day long, just go straight up," Vera laughed.When Vera noticed Pete was gone, he grabbed his drone and checked the few places he thought Pete could go.RELATED: Coronado gym creates 'March Madness' acts of kindness challenge"I thought it was gonna be hard to find him, but he was just blind wandering around up there you know," Vera said.Video shows Pete perched on the roof, in all his bright neon green splendor. Since there was no roof access, Vera enacted a daring rescue using his drone and some rope. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hospital leaders across San Diego County say they support Gov. Gavin Newsom's new regional stay-at-home order, which uses ICU bed capacity as the metric to impose stricter restrictions because of COVID-19."We're tight now. This is a serious situation, and we need everybody's help," said Scripps Health CEO Chris Van Gorder.Under the new order, if a region ever has less than 15% of its ICU beds available, the state would put an "emergency brake" in place, imposing more restrictions on businesses and activities.Van Gorder said several San Diego hospital leaders spoke with state health officials this week about the order and agreed the ICU metric was as good as any number to measure the severity of the pandemic.He said running out of ICU beds would devastate the hospital system, impacting anyone who needs critical care, not just COVID-19 patients."To be really blunt about it, people could die if we don't have the right equipment, beds and trained personnel to be able to take care of them when they have their emergency," Van Gorder said.A spokesperson from Sharp HealthCare echoed those sentiments, sending this statement to ABC 10News: "We want people to stay healthy and out of the hospital for COVID-19 by following safe practices so that ICU beds are available for patients who've been in serious accidents, cannot breathe on their own or had invasive surgeries."Van Gorder said grouping counties into regions make sense because many of them already fall under mutual aid agreements to help each other out."Imperial County is a classic example," he said. "Their hospitals back in July filled up very quickly, and San Diego was a lifeboat ... When you look at the broader region, there's a lot of hospitals within those regions, there may be some hospitals that aren't as impacted as other some other hospitals, so they're available and they're expected to take patients."According to state numbers, the Southern California region -- which San Diego County is a part of -- currently has 20.6% of their ICU beds available. Experts warn it could fall below the 15% within the coming week.Hospital leaders say San Diegans can help by wearing masks, social distancing and following other health and safety guidelines. 2255

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Frank Zamarron, 26, credits his Apple Watch for saving his life.“No warning signs, no pain no nothing,” Zamarron.  “All to know is that my Apple Watch started going off.”It was a Monday night in March, and his watch was alerting him something was wrong.“My heart-rate is elevated, and I'm just sitting at home watching TV relaxing from a long day at work,” he said. “After the fourth alert, I was like okay, something is not right. Time for me to a go to the hospital.”It was a decision that saved his life. It turns out, Zamarron contracted cellulitis, a skin infection, on his right leg. Soon after doctors started treating him, his leg began to blister.“Apparently your body is reacting to the infection trying to fight it off, doing everything it can, raising your heart rate,” Zamarron said. “They said it could have been fatal in a certain situation. Depending on how I treated it. Typically you would take pain pills or something and call it a day.”Zamarron spent seven days in the hospital.Doctors told him his weight might have contributed to the infection. Zamarron is now focused on staying active and getting healthier. 1223
