SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - San Diego County is offering help to families where a grandparent is a sole provider for his/her grandchildren, as that population expands.Through the Department of Health and Human Services, the County offers support groups, events, resources and more to help people in their golden years who are suddenly thrust back into the role of parent.According to the county's website, there are more than 24,000 grandparents in San Diego County who are raising a young child."That's a pretty large number," says Program Manager Tina Emmerick. "But what's really striking for us is we know that's not capturing the whole population."Emmerick says the reasons grandparents wind up providing for their grandchildren vary. In many cases, it's because the parents tested positive for drugs, are incarcerated, have mental health problems or passed away. For the grandparents left to raise the kids, it can be overwhelming."It's difficult," says Martha Lopez. She's been raising her grandson, Jacob since he was born. His mother, Martha's daughter Crystal, tested positive for Methamphetamine during birth and CPS was going to take Jacob away."I didn't want Jake to go anywhere else," says Lopez. "I wanted to make sure that he was well taken care of."I love him, and he deserves the best, and I'm here for him," she says.Lopez says the last six years have been wonderful, raising Jacob as her own. She had to take early retirement from her job at UC San Diego to become a full-time mom again.Jacob has limited contact with his biological mother, who Lopez says still has issues with drugs.Lopez is part of a support group run through the County. It's one of several programs they offer to grandparents raising grandchildren. The county started offering help to this group in 2012. The resources and support have expanded over the years. They now offer four symposiums throughout the year so grandparents can find all the help they need in one place."We can direct them to food banks, legal aid, support groups," says Emmerick. "They're realizing they're not alone in this. There are other families like them. And that broader community can wrap around these families and provide that extra support."The Live Well San Diego initiative and 2-1-1 help the county with the program. 2297

San Diego Unified School Board president and math teacher Kevin Beiser will introduce a resolution at Tuesday night's meeting demanding action from state and federal lawmakers pass stricter gun control laws."It's an opportunity for us parents students and teachers to speak in unison and call on our elected officials to do what we know is right and implement reasonable gun reform now, said Beiser ahead of the meeting. The board did something similar after the Sandy Hook school shooting back in 2012 but Beiser thinks it's worth stating again. And although it's not included in the resolution, Beiser expects the issue of arming teachers to come up at the meeting.Last week President Trump said he favored arming teachers to protect students. 763

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — After successive years of devastating wildfires, California's fire agency announced a plan Tuesday that would dramatically increase logging and other forest management efforts with the help of the National Guard. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection released a list of 35 priority fuel-reduction projects it wants to start immediately across the state over roughly 90,000 acres. That's double the acreage the agency aimed to cover in the current fiscal year, CalFire Deputy Chief Scott McLean said. The agency is also seeking National Guard assistance to coordinate the work. McLean said it was the first time he could recall turning to the National Guard for help with clearing trees and vegetation.RELATED: San Diego County areas on Cal Fire list of high-priority fire projects"It just goes to show you how committed everybody is," he said. The deadliest U.S. fire in a century destroyed much of Paradise — a city of 27,000 people in Northern California — in November 2018 and killed 86 people. California also experienced devastating wildfires in 2017, including a blaze that killed 22 people and destroyed more than 5,500 structures around the wine country city of Santa Rosa.Republican President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized California's Democratic officials for not doing a good enough job managing its forests and has threatened to cut off California's federal disaster funding.RELATED: Southern California wildfire burn zones on alert during stormThe 35 projects are based on input from local Calfire units and would reduce wildfire risk to more than 200 communities, according to Calfire. They include removing dead trees, clearing vegetation, and creating fuel breaks, defensible spaces and ingress and egress corridors. The projects prioritize communities at high risk from wildfires but also with significant numbers of vulnerable groups such as the elderly or poor. They include work around the city of Redding, which was also devastated by wildfire last year, and in Butte County, where Paradise is located. An estimated 15 million acres of forest land in California are in need of thinning or other restoration work, so the 35 projects are just a start, Calfire officials said. The agency wants to establish incident bases with the National Guard close to vulnerable communities to coordinate fuel-reduction projects.RELATED: PG&E: Company's equipment may have ignited Camp FireKathryn Phillips, director of Sierra Club California, said many of the recent fires were driven by high winds, so clearing trees and vegetation is not the solution. Calfire should focus more on clearing brush around homes and ensuring their roofs and attics are safe from flying embers, she said."We need to make sure we're doing the things that we know will protect homes," she said.Calfire does call on officials to identify options for retrofitting homes as part of its recommendations released Tuesday. 2954

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- People living on the streets are worried that the new portable restrooms installed by the city will get shut down because of those using them for illegal activity.  The city installed four portable bathrooms on First and C Street near City Hall. Four hand washing stations were also installed. On Monday, people using the restrooms were thankful and said the restrooms were long overdue. One man, a Navy veteran, told 10News he's used the restroom twice since they were installed. On one of those trips, he found a used needle. He worries drug users will force the city to shut the bathrooms down. The area has 24-hour security. Security guards work in 12- hour shifts. One guard told 10News he warns people that they can't stay in the bathroom for too long. The city plans on installing other portable restrooms at different locations in the coming weeks. Those locations haven't been announced.  962

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Trying to plan for life’s most joyful experiences has become another source of stress during the pandemic. With large weddings still on hold, couples remain in limbo.“These are people who’ve planned their weddings, spent a year, maybe two years, planning their wedding. And it’s just starting to crumble beneath them a little bit. Everything is being just ripped away, all these things they had planned," said Sara Whittaker, owner of Desert Born Studios in San Diego. And when weddings came to a halt, so did Whittaker's livelihood. “I looked at a lot of my other friends who are vendors in this industry and watched their years kind of plummet. And everyone struggling financially and still wanting to work,” said Whittaker. Knowing vendors were in need of work, and couples eager to get married, Whittaker set out to create a COVID-friendly wedding experience.“As a small business owner you really have to adapt or die," she said. "If you can’t figure out a way to roll with the punches that the world gives you, you’re not going to make it.”Teaming up with industry vendors, she crafted an all-inclusive wedding elopement experience. The ,500 package includes florals, hair and makeup, photos, video, and a wedding officiant. Couples can invite up to 15 people to the elopement ceremony in Joshua Tree National Park.Bree Steffen, owner of Pause Creative Collective, built and designed a desert-themed ceremony backdrop. "It was just really cool to be a part of something this intimate and special while still being safe. It was awesome to capture these couples being so strong and committed to each other and finding a safe way to celebrate their love, even during a pandemic!" said Steffen, who is also the event videographer. After months of wedding planning stress and anxiety, Izzy Van Vleet opted for the desert elopement soon after hearing about it. “We had a big warehouse venue picked out, with 200 guests. It was going to be a big celebration. I had a lot of the planning done and it didn't look like those plans were going to work out." said Van Vleet. She liked the idea of an intimate wedding with her closest friends and family. “Now, we get to spend time with the people that are most important, that we would’ve wanted to spend time with anyway and just really celebrate our love and getting married," said Van Vleet. “It’s not so much about who’s got the biggest floral budget or the most expensive dress. It’s about marrying the person you love, and having those people that you love the very most being able to witness it as well," said Whittaker. She believes it's a trend that could continue after the pandemic and plans to create new elopement experiences in the future. 2725
