SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 9-year old in Ocean Beach is using his lemonade stand to help others.Dylan Rodriguez sets up his lemonade stand on Bacon Street every Wednesday near the OB Farmer's Market. Initially, he wanted to make some money for himself."He wanted to raise a 0 bill," says his mother, Holly Raines.But after accomplishing that goal, his efforts became more altruistic."It feels nice helping somebody out, because, if I was in that position, I would like a lot of help too," says Dylan.Over the past three years, he's used some of the money from the lemonade stand to pay for a handful of charitable projects. He's given backpacks of supplies to the homeless, bought art supplies for kids at Rady's Childrens Hospital and bought holiday presents for refugee families."It makes me satisfied knowing that he's got a giant heart," says Raines.Recently, Dylan's giving has become more personal. One of his friends was diagnosed with a form of Muscular Dystrophy. Dylan decided to help with payments for his treatments."He needs a lot of money for each treatment," says Dylan. "It's, like, ,000 each time. So I'm trying to raise money for him."In June, Dylan was able to give his friend 0. He says he'll keep giving his lemonade money to his friend indefinitely."I'd like to give him ,000," says Dylan. "I don't know if I can get that much money, but I'm hoping to make a lot of money for him." 1417

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy's Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies released a report today detailing recommendations for both countries to cooperate on border security and drug trafficking policy.Chief among the report's recommendations is the creation of a joint cooperating group to help both countries reconcile their differences to achieve the best policies possible. The report also suggests the creation of a joint task force to disrupt trafficking of opioids like fentanyl.Bilateral cooperation is made difficult at the moment, according to the center, due to the divergent policy views of U.S. President Donald Trump and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who took office last December.While Lopez Obrador declared an end to the country's war on drugs in January, Trump has sought to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border to deter drug traffickers and violent criminals in addition to immigrants entering the country illegally."Despite these challenges, we see this as an opportunity to resume a dialogue at the highest level around bilateral security,'' said Rafael Fernandez de Castro, the center's director. "Our report offers concrete and implementable policy recommendations over the next six years of Lopez Obrador's presidency, ensuring policymakers are informed and prepared to continue cooperation efforts in a difficult phase in the bilateral relationship.''In addition to the two joint groups, the center suggested that the U.S. should improve its cooperation with and support for Mexico's newly established National Guard, its criminal justice system and community policing efforts in both countries. Lopez Obrador has repeatedly stated his intention to snuff out acts of corruption and extortion in Mexico, a measure the U.S. should assist in investigating, according to the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies."It's critical that the two countries align their shared security interests, as the safety of Mexican and U.S. citizens and the security of both countries are intertwined,'' said Cecilia Farfan-Mendez, at postdoctoral scholar at the center.Fernandez de Castro, Farfan-Mendez and former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Earl Wayne presented their report to the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., last month. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- 2018 was a big year for SeaWorld and new rides opening in San Diego seem to be paying off. In a new report, the company announced its first increase in attendance since 2015. A newly-released report by SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc. found that attendance increased to 22.6 million guests in 2018, up more than eight percent. According to Statista, 2018 marked the first time SeaWorld saw an increase in attendance since 2015. The report comes as SeaWorld San Diego gets ready to open another big attraction this spring. Construction on a new roller coaster, called Tidal Twister, is set to be finished in May. The coaster will feature a figure-8, horizontal design and dueling trains. Riders will be able to sit both backward and forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A deaf and legally blind man was promoted to the Marine Corps Recruitment Depot as a Prep Chef last week and is thrilled to be back to work. Kevin Tong was born deaf in Vietnam and moved with his family to San Diego when he was 13. He fell in love with cooking during an internship and started working in hotels, honing his skills in the kitchen.In his 20s another challenge hit, his vision started to go dark. "I started to see from what would be considered a tunnel and I went to the doctor because it was really alarming to me to work in food services and not have the vision I needed to cut safely," Tong said through interpreter Laila-Wendy Chouinard with the Helen Keller National Center.From 2016 until about two months ago, Tong didn't have a job. That's where the HKNC stepped in with training.They have six core areas of training, according to Susanne Hogan, Senior Orientation and Mobility Specialist, Helen Keller National Center. "We teach in orientation and mobility, which teaches travel in the community or the work environment. We teach assistive technology," which helps those with hearing or vision loss communicate says Hogan."They helped me not only as a deaf-blind person to find success but they taught me how to be independent by teaching me mobility skills, taught me employment skills," Tong said through sign language.He advocates for others in his shoes, "so for those who are deaf-blind or have vision loss, I tell them be flexible and learn to take on challenges." He said even if you can't do something, watch and absorb the information. He said if you don't give up you can achieve your dreams, like saving up to travel the world. "I want to learn more about other deaf cultures, other deaf-blind people who live abroad, I want to see what they do and how they live," Tong says.Tong is one of about half of the staff at the Mess Hall overcoming obstacles to try and lead a normal life, serving those who serve our country. He works for a company called Sodexo, and General Manager Kevin Hollingsworth said he's been very impressed with Kevin's ability and his drive to earn promotions.Tong worked for Camp Pendleton for two months before being promoted and transferring to MCRD. At MCRD he works off a recipe to feed 2,700 recruits three times a day, according to officials on base.A green cutting board helps him see what he's doing easier and he wears extra pairs of gloves to protect himself while working: "If I show any type of distraction it could cost me one of my fingers."October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month and the Helen Keller National Center hopes to raise awareness of their services and help those like Tong.The Mess Hall hasn't stopped running through the pandemic, keeping Marines and recruits full and ready for training. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A former associate vice chancellor for UC San Diego is suing the university for age and gender discrimination, as well as wrongful termination.Jean Ford, former Associate Vice Chancellor for UC San Diego Health Sciences Advancement, filed her lawsuit Monday against the UC Regents and Chancellor Pradeep Khosla.Ford said she “reported discrimination, harassment, retaliation and abusive conduct by Khosla and his chief of staffs (current and former) and assistant chancellor numerous times.”“No formal investigation was initiated and no meaningful action was taken to… prevent further harassment,” according to the court documents.According to her biography still on the UC San Diego website, she spearheaded the health sciences portion of the university’s campus wide campaign. Ford came to San Diego in 2015 after a decade at Columbia University Medical Center, where she most recently served as vice president for development. According to the lawsuit, Ford was recruited to work for UC San Diego. She had more than 20 years of experience in health sciences development.She said in December 2015 that working conditions began to deteriorate. The lawsuit states Khosla changed Ford’s reporting structure and wanted her to report to a male supervisor who had “significantly less experience in fundraising, management or identifying and recruiting team members.” Ford alleges that she was overlooked for promotion in favor of a younger man “who had no similar experience to [her].”The lawsuit stated Khosla was “increasingly hostile” to Ford, despite having obtained million in gifts within her first eight months of working at UC San Diego. She said that he openly questioned her salary and expressed irritation she was making so much money; however, Khosla did not make any comments to highly-compensated males.His behavior toward women was regularly displayed, according to court documents. Khosla “spoke openly and negatively about President Napolitano and made it clear that he did not answer to her.”Ford alleged he made comments about her shoes and clothing. She added that Khosla targeted multiple women over the age of 40 for discrimination and harassment. Ford ultimately expressed her concern directly to the chancellor, who later retaliated against her by “undermining [her] work, openly questioning her decisions, blocking her recruitments, refusing to approve her budget expenditures, continuously changing the Chancellor’s expectations for her, and making negative comments to her co-workers, subordinates—and even donors.” In August 2018, she was accused of ordering her assistant to take an online compliance module for her—something Ford said was not true. She was fired that month for “sharing of her password and her assistant taking the course for her, as well as less than satisfactory performance in key areas.”Team 10 reached out to officials at UC San Diego. A university spokesperson said: “UC San Diego has only recently become aware of the complaint, which has not yet been served on the University. UC San Diego and Chancellor Khosla strongly condemn all forms of intimidation, harassment and discrimination and are committed to fostering a climate that is supportive of our students, staff and faculty. The University will review the complaint and respond appropriately.”Ford’s attorney, Kristina Larsen, said the University of California has been aware of the chancellor’s treatment of women since at least 2014. Her statement said in part:“The President and the Regents seem to have made a deliberate choice to say or do nothing, and the culture of silence empowered the Chancellor and his immediate staff to act with impunity. My client made the brave decision to challenge this culture of silence by speaking out about the hostile environment she experienced at UCSD, of course because of the significant harm to her personally, but also in the hopes that she could serve as a voice for others who may continue to suffer in silence but are not in a position to speak out.” 4039
