SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County reported 284 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, 69 of those cases connected to San Diego State University.Thursday's reported cases bring the region's total to 41,608 cases.Since the fall semester started on Aug. 24, San Diego State has reported 509 confirmed COVID-19 cases and four probable cases. Greeters, or wellness ambassadors, are also on campus to remind students of COVID-19 policies.Violation of the policies can result in suspension or in extreme cases, expulsion.Thursday, the California State University system, which includes SDSU, announced that course would continue to be held mostly online in Spring 2021, with certain limited instances for in-person classes."We have learned from experience that announcing this decision now will allow faculty and staff to continue or start professional development to be even more effective in the virtual space. We also know that deciding now will allow our students and their families time to plan appropriately. This decision is the only responsible one available to us at this time," says CSU Chancellor Timothy White. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego is bringing back its Portable Pool program to help teach children water safety skills. The program will officially open at City Heights Recreation Center starting June 17. While pools are installed, the city will provide free, week-long water safety skills classed for children ages 3 through 15. According to the city, the classes can accommodate as many as 100 children per week with six to 10 children in each class. “Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children ages one to 14 and is the leading cause of accidental injury death for children ages one to four years old,” said Nicole McNeil, Supervising Recreation Specialist for the City’s Aquatics Program. “The City is offering these important free classes to help young children learn basic swimming skills to keep them safe around pools and prevent unnecessary drowning tragedies.”An additional portable pool will be installed at the Robert Egger Sr./South Bay Recreation Center starting July 1. The portable pools will be in place for three weeks before being moved to facilities in Paradise Hills, Linda Vista and Ocean Beach recreational centers. Registration for Portable Pools is on a first-come, first-served basis. To enroll, parents must fill out an ActiveNet form and return it to the recreation center where the portable pool is located. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Rocks or BB pellets have hit more than a dozen taxis as they traveled near the San Diego International Airport over the past week, cab drivers told 10News.The attacks along Harbor Drive have left cracks in their windshields and dents in the vehicles’ sides, cabbies said.“It's life threatening and we are just shocked what's going on,” said cabbie Ahmad Saddat-Nejad.Saddat-Nejad, who has been driving for almost 30 years, said he has never had anything like these attacks happen.“My car was not even in motion. Suddenly, I hear ‘boom’. Somebody threw a rock,” he said, reporting an incident on Harbor Drive at Laurel Street.“It happened to five cars yesterday again,” said Alex Tegegne of the San Diego Taxi Association.Tegegne said the attacks occur every night after dark, from North Harbor Drive down the Embarcadero.“We start to say do we need a helmet, or what should we do now? Should we avoid going on Harbor? What can we do,” Tegegne told 10News.In all, 17 cabs have been targeted.“It is totally very scary, and the customers don't feel comfortable about it,” said Tegegne.Cab drivers say they can’t afford to lose those customers. The success of Uber and Lyft have taken a toll on the taxi industry.“We don't know if this thing is taking business from us. We are already on life support to begin with, but this will be another threat to our customers and also ourselves," Tegegne said.The threat could be enough to put drivers out of work.“He could have killed me and I’m scared of driving now.
