Former Fox News anchor Shepard Smith has a new landing spot after leaving the network abruptly last fall. CNBC announced that Smith will join the network and host a 7 p.m. newscast.“The News with Shepard Smith” will launch this fall, and CNBC said that Smith will also serve as the network's chief general news anchor and managing editor of the breaking news division.“I am honored to continue to pursue the truth, both for CNBC’s loyal viewers and for those who have been following my reporting for decades in good times and in bad,” Smith said in a press release.Smith was one of FOX News' original hires when the network launched in 1996. Finding the right child care can be a frustrating -- and expensive -- process for parents around the world, from New York to Nairobi.Access to adequate child care for all has become a "global" need, said Shelley Clark, a demographer and professor of sociology at McGill University in Canada, who has studied child care and other family dynamics."We can think of iconic images like The Atlantic monthly cover of the mom carrying the kid in the briefcase to work and how absurd that's supposed to be to us, but then when we think of women in lower-income countries, you think of the mom selling goods at the market with a kid strapped to her back, and you think, 'Well, that's not a problem for her, because she can easily combine child care and work,' " Clark said."There's this perception out there that for the kinds of work that women do in lower-income countries, it's easier to combine child care and work," she said. "The fact is, it's quite challenging for these moms, also."Clark added that families in lower-income countries spend a significant chunk of their income -- about 17% of some women's average earnings -- on child care services, similar to those in wealthier countries.Families living across 30 wealthy nations in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development spend on average about 15% of their net income on child care costs, according to a 2016 report from the group, an association of 35 countries founded to improve economic development and social well-being around the world.Yet the percentage of a family's income spent on child care costs varies drastically by country: Couples spend 33.8% in the United Kingdom, but in Korea, Austria, Greece and Hungary, couples spend less than 4% due to government benefits and programs. Fourth of July celebrations may look a little different this year, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture says you should still be able to enjoy your favorite patriotic foods in a safe way.No matter how you’re celebrating, the USDA is encouraging Americans to make food safety and other public health recommendations a part of their festivities.USDA officials offered these tips to ensure a food safe Fourth of July:Don’t cross-contaminateAlways keep raw meat and their juices from touching other foods.While grilling, avoid using the same utensils for cooked and ready-to-eat foods that were previously used with raw meat or poultry products. Wash and sanitize all surfaces and utensils after they touch raw items. (A recent USDA survey showed that 34% of respondents do not follow an important step to use a different utensil to take food off the grill.)Bring enough tools to keep your raw meat and poultry away from any cooked or ready-to-eat foods and have extra cleaning and sanitizing supplies ready for your surfaces, plates and utensils.Use a food thermometerSome grill masters may say they know their food is done just by looking at its color when it comes off the grill, but the USDA says that’s not possible and shouldn’t be relied upon. That’s where a food thermometer comes in.“More than 25% of burgers can turn brown inside before they are fully cooked,” said FSIS Administrator Paul Kiecker. “Although your grilled foods may look done, foodborne illness causing germs are not killed until the safe internal temperature has been reached. Using a food thermometer is the only way to know your food is done and safe to eat.”The USDA recommended safe minimum internal temperatures are:· Beef, pork, lamb and veal (steaks, roasts and chops): 145°F then rest for three-minutes· Fish: 145°F· Ground meats (beef, pork, lamb and veal): 160°F· Whole poultry, poultry breasts and ground poultry: 165°FKeep foods at safe temperaturesPerishable food items should not be left outside for more than two hours, and only one hour if the temperature is at or above 90°F.Keep your food at or below 40°F, in coolers or containers with a cold source, such as ice or frozen gel packs.
