John King, Justin Harnage, and Jeremy Rouse responded to a home on in Fort Pierce, Florida, on Tuesday after an 86-year-old man fell and was unable to get up.Officials said the elderly man has trouble walking and needed help getting into his wheelchair, which was located outside on the patio.Noticing that the home didn't have a proper wheelchair ramp, the three firefighters went back to their fire station, built a wheelchair ramp out of plywood, then took it back to the elderly man's home and installed it at his front door."Acts like these, which are above and beyond the call of duty, reinforce the Fire District motto: 'Our Family Serving Yours.'" said Division Chief Aaron Shaw. 845

ALACHUA COUNTY, Florida — A portion of southbound I-75 remains closed Friday after five children and two adults were killed in a fiery crash on Thursday afternoon near Gainesville. The five children were reportedly on their way to Disney World, according to FHP. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, at least six patients were transported to area hospitals from the scene — multiple patients with critical injuries. Alachua County Fire Rescue says the crash occurred at 3:42 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-75 near mile marker 393 north of Northwest 39th Avenue. The crash involved two tractor-trailers, a passenger van and a mid-size four-door sedan, according to Florida Highway Patrol. As of Friday morning, northbound lanes and only one southbound lane of I-75 is open in the area. During a news conference on Friday morning, Lt. Patrick Riordan said the church passenger van carrying the children was from the Avoyelles Parish in Louisiana. A wildfire is burning out of control north of Los Angeles, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes, fire officials said.The Tick fire near Santa Clarita broke out Thursday and in just a few hours has burned about 3,950 acres, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. It was 5% contained by late Thursday.The wind-driven blaze had only scorched a couple hundred acres when it quickly exploded to more than 3,000 acres and destroyed several structures, the fire department said.The cause was unknown.The Agua Dulce area, where the Tick Fire is burning, was part of the ongoing intentional power outages, said Lois Bruce, a spokesperson with Southern California Edison.The area was de-energized at about 8:50 am (local time) and blaze started at approximately 1:45pm, Bruce said.Wind speeds in the area are sustained at about 15 mph, with gusts of roughly 30 mph, the National Weather Service said.Mandatory evacuations were ordered for homes in the northern area of Los Angeles County and several shelters were opened.An animal protection nonprofit was scrambling to evacuate animals from their farm in Santa Clarita as a large plume of dark smoke was spotted near the property."Please support our efforts to activate our emergency plan! Amid treasures on display from Africa, Selemani Sikasabwa feels right home.“My ancestors used some of them,” he said.Selemani is part of the Global Guides program at the Penn Museum in Philadelphia.“I share my own stories,” he said.He’s one of seven guides offering tours of galleries, with exhibits that represent the regions they come from: Africa, the Middle East, along with Mexico and Central America. Some are immigrants, while others are refugees, like Selemani.He fled his home in the Democratic Republic of Congo and spent 19 years in Tanzania as a refugee, before coming to the U.S. five years ago.“I left my country because of the war,” he said. “There’s war in my country.”For the museum, the program offers a chance to back up their collections with real-life experiences.“The more I talk about this, the more it occurs to me that this is kind of a no-brainer,” said Ellen Owens, the Penn Museum’s director of engagement.She said the museum found the Global Guides helped attract 300 more visitors, just in the last three months. Owens added that about a half-dozen other museums have reached out to them--including the Metropolitan Museum in New York City--to learn more about their Global Guides program.“We really wanted people to feel more connected to our objects,” she said. “When objects are so old – 5,000, 7,000 years old -- it's really hard to bridge the gap between now and life now, and life way back then.”The Global Guides program got its start in 2018 in the Mideast Gallery.
