The global financial crisis has an impact that can not be neglected on the implementation of the MDGs, but the world should aware that the MDGs and dealing with the crisis are not contradictory, Wu said.He stressed it will be more significant for the international community to speed up the MDGs' implementation process while there still exists in-depth impact of the financial crisis and uncertainty of the world economy's systematic and structural risks.

BRASILIA, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's Foreign Ministry issued a statement late Tuesday, expressing the government's regret over the tragedy caused by mudslides in northwest China's Gansu province."The Brazilian government learned with deep regret of the avalanches" that killed at least 1,117 people, with 627 missing in China's Gansu province, the statement said.Brazil also expressed its solidarity with the Chinese government and people, offering condolences to the families of the victims.The devastating landslide, which occurred Saturday in Zhouqu City, Gansu province, also destroyed numerous houses and buildings.So far, a total of 567 survivors have received treatment while 64 seriously injured have been hospitalized, according to the provincial civil affairs bureau.

PIRAEUS, Greece, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese naval escort warships arrived in Greece's Piraeus Port on Monday, kicking off a five-day visit.The vessels, destroyer Guangzhou and frigate Chaohu, are part of the fifth Chinese naval escort flotilla, which just completed the escort mission in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters to protect commercial ships from pirate attacks.Chinese Ambassador to Greece Luo Linquan and some 200 Chinese nationals came to the port to welcome the arrival of the two Chinese warships. Waving Chinese and Greek national flags, the enthusiastic Chinese living in Greece greeted the Chinese sailors with cheers.They were excited when allowed to tour one of the ships."We are so excited to have a chance to board a Chinese naval destroyer," Wu Hailong, a Chinese businessman in Athens, said, adding that he and his friends come to Piraeus early in the morning from central Athens to welcome the Chinese navy soldiers.Zhang Buren, a Chinese national from Taiwan who has lived in Athens for more than three decades, said he was very impressed by the elegant demeanor of Chinese navy soldiers. "I feel very much proud as a Chinese and so happy to see China is developing fast."At a welcoming ceremony held at the port, the Chinese ambassador said the Chinese navy has made its effort in fighting piracy. "The Chinese naval escort flotilla has successfully escorted some 20 Greek commercial vessels in the waters near Somalia in the past few years," he said. Greece is one of the countries with biggest commercial fleets.The Chinese envoy added that the Greek government and Greek Navy attach great importance to the visit by the Chinese naval fleet. URUMQI, June 14 (Xinhua) -- China is diversifying its methods of importing energy from neighbor countries in central Asia as a train carrying 45 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Kazakhstan reached the country's inland port of Alataw Pass on Monday in the northwest Xinjiang region.It also marked the first time China imported energy from central Asia using railroads, rather than pipelines, since the founding of new China back in 1949."Central Asia is rich in oil and gas. China's state-owned oil giant CNPC has made large investments in recent years to purchase and explore resources in the region," said Gao Hongbo, general manager of a privately-run logistics and financial services company based in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region."Oil and gas could be transported through pipelines but the liquefied gas, obtained as a by-product from the refining of petroleum, could not be effectively transported due to the product's nature, causing huge waste," Gao said.Gao said the only option is to import the liquefied gas using railways, given current circumstances.But China's railways use the standard gauge (distance between rails at 1,435 mm), which is different from its Central-Asian neighbors' broad rail gauge (distance above 1,435 mm), and special lines need first to be built for the mass importing of LPG.Gao said his company has so far spent 300 million yuan (44 million U.S. dollars) in building nine broad-gauge rails and six standard gauge rails in Alataw Pass. These lines are expected to import 50,000 tonnes of LPG this year.The company plans a total of 21 lines to be built, and the annual capacity of these lines is expected to reach 200,000 tonnes of LPG during the next three years.These lines, when completed, will also be used to import 500,000 tonnes of oil each year and 2.5 million tonnes of commodities and mineral resources from central Asia.

BEIJING, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm "Dianmu" along with gusty winds will strengthen precipitation in north China as it moves north, the national meteorological agency warned on Monday.The typhoon, started Sunday night in the sea about 400 kilometers east of Taiwan, is expected to complicate flood-control efforts in northeast China, where torrential rain-triggered floods have left more than 100 people dead and missing.Heavy rains will hit parts of northeast China's Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces on Tuesday. Northwest China's Gansu and Shaanxi provinces will also be affected, said the National Meteorological Center.The typhoon, the fourth this year, was moving northeast at a speed of 25 km per hour. Its center was located about 390 km east of Zhejiang Province's coast Monday afternoon and will approach southern coast of the Korean Peninsula on Tuesday, said the center.
