UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday welcomed the smooth development of the south Sudan referendum, voicing its hope that the parties in south and north Sudan could reach a consensus at an early date on the outstanding issues through dialogue and consultations.Li Baodong, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, made the statement in an interview with Xinhua after he spoke at the UN Security Council about the Chinese stance on the situation of Sudan.Earlier on Wednesday, the Security Council met to hear briefings from Atul Khare, UN assistant secretary-general for peacekeeping operations, and Ibrahim Gambari, the joint special representative of the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), on the current situation in Sudan."China welcomes the smooth development of the south Sudan referendum, this is the result of the joint efforts of north and south Sudan and the international community," Li said."At present, priority should be given to the following work: First, continuous efforts should be made to fully maintain peace and stability in Sudan to enable the country to realize its long- term peace, stability and development," he said. "Second, efforts should be made to encourage the parties in south and north Sudan to continue their efforts for the full implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), particularly for a consensus at an early date on the outstanding issues."The referendum, with its week-long polling period ending on Jan. 15, will determine whether south Sudan remains a part of Sudan or becomes independent, in accordance with the 2005 CPA that ended a long-running north-south civil war.The referendum's preliminary results are expected to be announced by Feb. 2, and depending on whether appeals are launched in the courts, the final result will be declared on Feb. 7 or 14.

SYDNEY, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Australian soldiers and contractors in Iraq might have been exposed to blood-borne diseases such as HIV or hepatitis, as staff at Defense's main hospital unit in the Middle East failed to sterilize surgical equipment properly, local media reported on Tuesday.Fairfax newspapers reported the safety breach occurred at the AL Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates over a 19 month period, from February 2009 to August 2010, but soldiers were alerted to the problem only a week ago.A Defense Department memo to troops has warned that soldiers and contractors who passed through the air base hospital near Dubai should ensure they had their blood screened, The Sydney Morning Herald reported."Personnel who underwent a surgical procedure during that period are possibly at risk of acquiring a blood-borne disease," the memo said.However, the health alert says the risk to Australian Defense Force personnel is low, as blood-borne diseases within the force are rare and personnel are vaccinated against hepatitis.The Defense Force's Surgeon-General, Major General Paul Alexander, wrote the "internal procedural issue" was dealt with by the health system and measures were put in place to prevent a repeat of the error.

LOS ANGELES, May 5 (Xinhua) -- NASA has selected three planetary missions from which it will pick one potential mission to look at Mars' interior for the first time, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) announced on Thursday.The Mars mission, to be launched in 2016, would be led by JPL, according to the announcement.The other two missions would study an extraterrestrial sea on one of Saturn's moons; or study in unprecedented detail the surface of a comet's nucleus, said JPL in Pasadena, Los Angeles.The selected investigations could reveal much about the formation of our solar system and its dynamic processes, JPL said.Each mission will receive three million dollars to conduct its mission's concept phase or preliminary design studies and analyses, JPL said in a news release.After another detailed review in 2012 of the concept studies, NASA will select one to continue development efforts leading up to launch. The selected mission will be cost-capped at 425 million dollars, not including launch vehicle funding, according to JPL.NASA's Discovery Program requested proposals for spaceflight investigations in June 2010. A panel of NASA and other scientists and engineers reviewed 28 submissions."NASA continues to do extraordinary science that is re-writing textbooks," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. HARBIN, March 2 (Xinhua) -- A therapeutic apparatus to treat Parkinson's disease has been developed in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, according to the provincial science and technology department. It is a worldwide breakthrough in treating the disease with transcranial magnetic stimulation, concluded an expert panel with the Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Science and Technology.The team said it came to the conclusion after evaluating technical documents and clinical test results Monday.This is the first time that transcranial magnetic stimulation has been adopted to treat Parkinson's disease, said Sun Zuodong, chairman of Aobo Medicine Apparatus Co., Ltd. (AMA), the developer based in the provincial capital Harbin.Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a noninvasive method which causes depolarization in the brains' neurons so as to restore the functions of brain nerves.The apparatus consists of three parts, namely brain wave stimulator, field effect cap and multiplier, said Sun.Clinical tests over more than 100 patients showed that the apparatus had a 70 percent success rate in reducing the disease's symptoms, according to Wang Aili, planning manager of AMA.The new equipment will help generation of dopamine, the reduction of which within the brain caused the disease, said Wang Weixiang, a consulting doctor with the Heilongjiang Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital.Parkinson's disease is a disorder of the neural system, which leads to limb tremors and difficulty in walking and other movements.China has 2 million patients suffering from Parkinson's disease, mostly people over the age of 50, and the number is increasing by 100,000 annually, said Dr. Wang.
