SAN DIEGO — A University City rabbi says a teenager on a bicycle hit him over the head and yelled a racial slur Saturday, steps from his synagogue.Rabbi Yonatan Halevy, of the Shiviti Congregation, says this was the latest in a series of incidents by a group of teenagers targeting his congregation that has increasingly escalated. "Everyday they come by here, taunt us, throwing bottles at us, sitting on our roof blasting music, and then breaking a window to my van," Halevy said. "Last but not least, what happened on Saturday."Halevy moved the congregation of 44 families into a 3,300 square-foot space on the southwest corner of the UC Marketplace shopping center to allow for enough social distancing to celebrate the High Holy Days amid the Coronavirus outbreak. He says the group of teenagers routinely causes a nuisance on the property, but seems to single out his congregation, formally called Kahillet Shaar HaShamayim. On Saturday, Halevy says he was walking to synagogue with his father on Governor Drive, when one of the teens recognized them. He says the teen biked over, hit the rabbi over the head with a closed fist, called him the N-word and yelled a variation of white power before biking away. "I felt very scared, definitely unsafe for the first time in my life in this neighborhood," he said. Halevy called 9-1-1 and said police officers arrived 45 minutes later. They did not make an arrest, but he told them about the series of incidents. The congregation has also designated some of its members as security guards. The incident comes amid an increase in anti-Semitism in the United States. Last year, a 19-year-old allegedly entered the Chabad of Poway Synagogue, killed one congregant and injured three others, including a child. On Monday, Halevy said he met with four officers, including a San Diego Police detective and a community relations officer. He says they pledged to increase resources to the case and are going to search for the teens, getting school police involved. A police spokesman said it would be investigated as a hate crime. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former Wells Fargo personal banker accused of involvement in a Tijuana-based international money laundering organization that operated primarily in San Diego made his initial appearance in U.S. District Court today after his arrest Wednesday.The apprehension of 30-year-old Luis Fernando Figueroa marks the latest in a string of indictments and arrests tied to the money laundering organization, federal authorities said.Figueroa, of Tijuana, is charged with conspiracy to launder monetary instruments and operation of an unlicensed money transmitting business.Between January and March of this year, seven leaders of the organization were charged and arrested in San Diego. To date, five of the charged leaders have pleaded guilty.According to the indictment and other public records, the organization laundered approximately .6 million in narcotics proceeds on behalf of Mexican-based drug trafficking organizations, including the Sinaloa Cartel, between 2014 and 2016.Prosecutors said the money laundering organization recruited individuals to serve as "funnel account holders" and open personal bank accounts at Wells Fargo Bank and other banking institutions.Other members of the money laundering organization, known as "couriers," traveled to San Diego, Los Angeles, the East Coast and other U.S. cities, where they picked up and transported amounts of bulk cash ranging from thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars in drug proceeds.Money was deposited in funnel bank accounts controlled by the money laundering organization and maintained at Wells Fargo and other financial institutions. Subsequently, the funds were transferred to a series of Mexico-based shell companies operated by the money laundering organization. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former San Diego County sheriff's deputy who fatally shot a fleeing detainee outside the downtown San Diego jail pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a second-degree murder charge.Aaron Russell, 23, is charged in the May 1 death of 36-year-old Nicholas Bils, who was unarmed and running away from officers when he was shot just outside the San Diego Central Jail, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office.The former deputy, who had been with the department for 18 months at the time of the shooting, surrendered to authorities on Monday, according to his attorney, Richard Pinckard.Russell, who resigned from the sheriff's department shortly after the shooting, faces 15 years to life in state prison if convicted of second-degree murder, and up to an additional 10 years if convicted of a firearm allegation.RELATED: Suspect who escaped park rangers' vehicle shot, killed by deputyBils had been arrested by rangers with the California Department of Parks and Recreation for allegedly threatening a ranger with a golf club at Old Town San Diego State Park. SAN DIEGO (CNS and KGTV) - The newly elected San Diego City Council members from districts 2, 4 and 8, as well as re-elected District 6 City Councilman Chris Cate, were sworn in Monday.Outgoing council members Lorie Zapf and David Alvarez gave parting remarks at the ceremony where incoming members Jennifer Campbell, Monica Montgomery and Vivian Moreno were officially welcomed to the 72nd City Council. Outgoing District 4 City Council President Myrtle Cole did not attend.Campbell, a physician and a Democrat who defeated Zapf, a Republican, in District 2 with nearly 58 percent of the vote, compared the job of a council member to her work as a family doctor."Each profession is focused on preventing and solving problems," she said. "In both, we listen to your problem, we learn the history of it, we make a diagnosis and provide a pathway to a cure. And that is how I will serve as District 2's representative in City Hall."Campbell flipping Zapf's seat gives Democrats a 6-3 supermajority on the technically nonpartisan council for at least the next two years."When we work together and we focus less on politics and focus more on the priorities of our communities, there is no challenge too great or obstacle too high that we cannot overcome," Mayor Kevin Faulconer said.Montgomery, a civil rights attorney, ousted Cole in District 4 by painting the incumbent as a City Hall insider out of touch with her own district.
