NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Six Metro Nashville police officers have been commended for their heroic response early Christmas morning when an RV exploded. The officers responded to the call of gunfire and upon hearing an RV play a recorded message saying the vehicle contained a bomb, took several measures to evacuate as many people as possible from Second Avenue.City leaders applauded the officers for their swift action, putting the lives of others ahead of their own. "They immediately began knocking on doors, not knowing when the bomb would go off," Chief John Drake said at a press conference Saturday night. "They didn't think of themselves...they thought of the citizens of Nashville. Officer Luellen arrived at the scene first. He said after five minutes, they heard a timer counting down from the RV. Officers noticed the shades were down on the vehicle but did not notice a tag. He said he didn't immediately notice the RV, but thought it may have been someone visiting town for Christmas. The officers contacted six to seven apartments and asked residents to evacuate.After some time, music began to play from the RV. Once the song finished, the announcement of a bomb continued. Officer Luellen said once the announcement resumed, he saw a man walking a dog. The man was notified of the warning and shortly after the RV exploded. Luellen said he was knocked over and the man was in shock.The second officer who responded to the scene was Brenna Hosey. She said when she heard the announcement coming from the RV she was confused. "Is this really what we're hearing right now," Hosey recalled thinking. She then began clearing apartments on Second Avenue floor-by-floor. They began these evacuation efforts as the RV announced there would be 14 minutes until detonation. Officer James Wells suffered hearing loss from the blast. Wells said once he heard Luellen call over the radio for an immediate response, he knew by the tone of his voice it was serious. Officer Topping said as she was getting to the area of Second Avenue and Commerce Street she began to hear the message playing from the RV. "That's a sound I'll never forget," she said. Sgt. (KGTV) - A plaque honoring Marines killed in a military training crash that happened 50 years ago at MCAS El Toro was unveiled at MCAS Miramar Wednesday."Knowing answers has really allowed us to come together," the granddaughter of Maj. Walter Zytkewicz, who was in the crash, said tearfully.Dozens of family members traveled to MCAS Miramar, where the squadron now resides, for the dedication.Pati Davis Ruane traveled from Georgia and still remembers the crash."I was 7 years old and we lived on base at El Toro, we saw the black smoke, playing around outside and was like, 'Hey mom look!' and she was like, 'Oh it's just the crash crew practicing,'" Ruane said. It wasn't the crash crew. A C-130 was completing touch-and-go practices and crashed violently, ultimately killing four of the five Marines on board.Her father, K.C. Davis, was the only one who saw his kids grow up, "I remember my mom going to three funerals in one day."This journey started in January 2019. Johnathan Keene often visited his cousin's grave at Arlington National Cemetery."I go up to visit him twice a year, typically Memorial Day and Veteran's Day," said Davis. Keene was in the neighborhood, Jan. 15, on his way to pick up his wife from the airport, and noticed Zytkewicz's grave next to the grave of his cousin, Capt. Robert Walls. Zytkewicz was in the Marines, like his cousin, and died the day before Walls. He said that "grabbed" him.Up until that day, Keene knew his cousin died in a military crash, but it wasn't spoken of at the dinner table. He knew there must be a connection to the two men, so he started digging. He found three other Marines were on the same training flight July 30, 1970: Staff Sgt. Kenneth Davis, 1st Lt. Roger W. Mullins, and Cpl. Kenneth Metzdorf."Major Zytkewicz was two months away from retiring," Keene said, adding that Zytkewicz was studying to become a realtor.Keene said Metzdorf wasn't supposed to be on the flight but, "called his best friend and said 'hey could you go on this flight for me today?' So they switched and that cost him [his life]."Keene tracked down the redacted incident report and filled in the gaps with interviews from witnesses and Marines who knew the men on board."Witnesses say they waited too late to pull the plane out of the angle of attack and the plane hit, bounced, flipped upside down, hit again, bounced in the air, the left wing fell off, all four props fell off. The plane landed right in the middle of the air field. Flames and fuel streamed down the runway, they said it was basically a long stream of fuel and fire," he said.Keene was amazed to learn his cousin and Metzdorf walked through the flames following the crash, "the report listed 80 percent - 90 percent coverage of third degree burns. I can't even imagine how he walked out," he said.Mullins was killed on impact, found 50 yards from the plane with a broken leg. Walls, Zytkewicz and Metzdorf died days later from their injuries. Keene said Walls died from burns in his lungs.Davis passed away in 2013.The exact cause was redacted in the report but Keene believes the Marine Corps wants to preserve the honor of the pilot and protect his family."After the crash, the material that made up Marine Corps and Navy flight suits was changed. They thought it was a flame retardant material, unfortunately it burned and melted to their skin," he said.Keene hopes these difficult discoveries will fuel Marines' admiration. To keep their memories alive, Keene created a plaque with the team's names. The plaque sits on the wall just inside the entrance to the squadron's historical room."Every other Marine that goes through that squadron will see that plaque and realize there's five men that in some way or another touched their lives from either a safety stand-point or history and lineology of VMGR-352," Keene said. 3858

But for the 30 million struggling with eating disorders, that stress can make them especially vulnerable.Mental health experts say as social distancing enters its fourth month, they’ve seen a dramatic spike in people seeking assistance. The good news, they say, is that there is help.Growing up in a conservative south Texas family, Eric Dorsa says not fitting a stereotypical masculine identity drove him into a dangerous relationship with food.“I developed an eating disorder as a way to cope with emotions and thoughts and feelings about myself that I couldn't express as a child,” said Dorsa.After 13 years of recovery, it’s still a battle.“It was the hardest thing I've ever done,” said Dorsa. “It is like a giant car crash going off in the middle of your life and you have no choice but to deal with it.”Dr. Ellen Astrachan-Fletcher is the clinical director of the Eating Recovery Center in Chicago. The international center treats eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating.“Does this pandemic and the isolation contribute to worsening difficulties with eating disorders? Absolutely 100%,” said Astrachan-Fletcher.She says for millions suffering from eating disorders, the months-long lockdowns and isolation from support systems is amplifying the problem.With grocery stores not stocking certain products, experts say that could be a trigger for people who need that normal routine and those specific food brands to help keep them on their recovery track.“The reality is we have to be flexible in this time because due to the pandemic things are not what we expect,” said Astrachan-Fletcher.People turning to food for comfort and social media messaging about weight gain are not helping.“When someone starts engaging with an eating disorder, they tend to isolate and that feeds the eating disorder,” said Astrachan-Fletcher. “So, the isolation and pushing loved ones away is one way the eating disorder grows.”The National Eating Disorders Association says it has seen a 74% increase in calls to their help line during the pandemic as compared to the same time last year.“Even though sometimes it feels like we're alone, you don't have to be and there are lots of people here to be there with you,” said Astrachan-Fletcher.Astrachan-Fletcher says it’s important to seek professional help, take a friend or family member with you when you go to the grocery store, and set up virtual online dates for meal-times or snack breaks.Dorsa says it’s important to find your helpers.“You're not alone and you're enough just as you are,” he said. “You don't have to show up any other way other than with what you have.
