CORONADO, Calif. -- A distracted school bus driver is being blamed for a chain-reaction crash that injured students on their way home.According to the CHP, just before 2 p.m. Wednesday, a bus carrying about 50 Coronado Middle School students rear-ended a truck that was stopped at a light, which hit another truck.Afterwards, Coronado's police chief and other officers handed out water because the bus was stuffy.There were no serious injuries, but six or seven students did complain of some pain.  It's unclear how many were taken to the hospital.The CHP says the preliminary cause is unsafe speed. The driver - in his sixties - claims he was distracted by something going on with the students.10News reached out to the school district to find out if the driver will face a suspension, but have yet to hear back. 826

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Two political opponents running against each other for the Coronado City Council have formed a special bond which they refuse to let be ruined by the campaign."She's my opponent, but I love my opponent. She's like a mother to me," says candidate Derik Mundt about fellow candidate Mary Sikes.The two have been friendly since Mundt was a teenager volunteering for the Coronado Film Festival, which Sikes ran until her retirement this year. However, they did not realize when they decided to run that they would be doing so against the other."She's a saint," Mundt said. "When you're sick, she brings you soup. That's what she does. She's like the mom of Coronado."Mundt recently found out how true those sentiments were. Last week he began feeling sick, with a fever topping 102. It turned out to be a case of the flu so bad, he was taken to the emergency room. Mundt ended up hospitalized for five days. One of his first calls was to Sikes."My first thought was just to get there and just be there," Sikes said.Sikes visited Mundt in the hospital each day and stayed in touch with his mother to update her on his status. When it became clear he would not be released in time for the final candidate forum in the race, Sikes made a surprising offer."You've come this far and it's so close," she told Mundt. "I'll give your speech tomorrow because I know it by heart."When Mundt was finally released from the hospital Monday afternoon, it was Sikes who came to pick him up and drive him home."Dirty politics don't belong in politics," Mundt says. "This is how it's supposed to be."There are six total candidates running for two open seats on the Coronado City Council, meaning it's possible Mundt and Sikes could both win or lose."What we've been saying to each other all along is if at least one of us gets on, we know that this town will be in good hands," Sikes said. 1917

(KGTV) - A group of armed suspects robbed a Sprint store on University Avenue in City Heights Monday night.San Diego Police say three suspects entered the store around 7:45 p.m. Witnesses told investigators that they were forced to the back of the store as the suspects raided a storage area.The suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of tablets, phones and cash, said police.A car matching the description of the suspect vehicle was later spotted at the Mobil gas station on Camino Del Rio North in Mission Gorge. (KGTV) - The Mayor of Coronado is turning heads for an op-ed he recently penned.Mayor Richard Bailey wrote a several hundred word submission for the Voice of San Diego this week titled, ‘It's Time to Put Roads Over Transit.’Citing SANDAG’s figures, Bailey says more than 50 percent of local transportation dollars are spent to move just 3.5 percent of commuters while roughly 13.5 percent of funs are spent on roads and highways.He also points to relatively stagnant public transportation ridership rates while traffic congestion balloons in San Diego County.“I can't foresee us moving people around on fixed routes on large empty buses and also really expensive trolley lines,” said Bailey, “I think people are going to be looking for more nimble solutions such as a autonomous vehicles and ride share options.”Transit advocates say shifting funds from public transportation as Bailey suggests would have a negative impact on those who already use it.“About 64,000 households in the San Diego County area don't have a car and it’s just absurd to think that we're going to take away their primary means of transportation,” said Colin Parent, executive director of Circulate San Diego.Parent agrees with Bailey that the ridership figure is small but says the answer is growing that figure, not stifling it by shrinking its budget.SANDAG will vote later this on its multi-decade regional transit plan. 1429
