SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ballast Point has introduced its way of giving back to the San Diego community after 20 years in business.Ballast Point is releasing "Made in San Diego," a new beer which will benefit the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation. The brewery will donate 50 cents for every case of the beer sold to the EDC Foundation Entrepreneurship Fund.Leaders from the city and Ballast Point officially tapped the beer at Wednesday's San Diego Padres game at Petco Park.RELATED: San Diego-based Ballast Point to become Disneyland's first on-site brewery"As a brewery that has called San Diego home for over two decades, we couldn’t be more excited about this announcement," Marty Birkel, president of Ballast Point Brewing Company, said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Court services are being drastically reduced due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which affects both civil and criminal proceedings. The closure will last until April 3rd.“My fear is that we’re going to have situations where individuals are going to stay in custody longer than what the law permits,” said David P. Shapiro, a criminal defense attorney. “What happens to the individuals who are in custody who have a future court date?”By law, you should have your first court appearance within 48 hours after your arrest. That excludes weekends and holidays, according to a spokesperson with the District Attorney’s Office.“We are in constant meetings with the court and the Public Defender and the Sheriff, our law enforcement partners,” said District Attorney Summer Stephan.Stephan said they have dealt with closures, such as during our past major wildfires. They are working on a system to review criminal cases to see who is suitable for community release.“This is an evolving process, but what we’re trying to do is to maintain due process in the time of crisis,” Stephan said.A Sheriff’s Department spokesperson told 10News they are “working with the District Attorney’s Office and evaluating the impact” the court closures might have.“I was personally hoping they would have an emergency department available through all this just for arraignments, just for in-custody arraignments. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans maintenance crews closed the westbound Interstate 8 connector to northbound state Route 67 at 9 p.m. Thursday night, but lanes were reopened at 5 a.m. Friday morning. The closure took effect for guardrail repair, according to Caltrans.Signs were posted to direct motorists on westbound I-8 to exit at West Main Street and turn left to eastbound I-8 to SR-67.Motorists were reminded to be work zone alert and slow down when approaching Caltrans vehicles with amber flashing lights.Caltrans says Californians can expect more roadway improvement projects like this made possible by the recently passed Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, Senate Bill 1.  715

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Approximately 200 California Army National Guard troops are in San Diego County at the request of San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore, to deter looting following last weekend's events in La Mesa.About 100 troops are stationed at the La Mesa Police Headquarters. The rest are in an undisclosed area ready to move anywhere in the county.“We’ve seen arson, we’ve seen looting, and especially in La Mesa where we were there assisting La Mesa Police Department,” said Gore. “To be quite honest, the crowd overwhelmed us, we had not enough resources there, and we were in a position of defending the La Mesa Police Department, so it didn’t get burned to the ground like two banks did.”After a chaotic scene unfolded in La Mesa on Saturday following a peaceful demonstration, several businesses were looted and damaged, two banks burned down, and La Mesa City Hall sustained fire damage.“I believe that the police were overwhelmed in La Mesa, and they need backup,” said La Mesa resident Teresa Olmsted. “There’s those that are trying to get their point across and those that are taking advantage.”Gore said the troops do not have the same authority as officers and cannot make an arrest, but they can detain suspects until officers arrive.They will guard businesses and buildings where needed.“They do not have peace officer powers. So they will be there to protect infrastructure, they can escort ambulances and fire engines if they need to get into a particular scene to put out a fire or render aid to somebody,” he said. “The enforcement actions will be left to police officers.
