SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department gave 10News a behind the scenes look at the specially-trained team that solves arson cases. Inside Station One is the elite and highly specialized Metro Arson Strike Team, or MAST, made up of fire investigators, police detectives, ATF, FBI and a bomb squad. The team is dedicated solely to investigate arson. To be on the specialized team, MAST training goes beyond the fire academy. “You are wearing the hat of an electrical engineer, a scientist, a fire fighter, a report writer. We wear a lot of different hats and we have to be good at it,” said Captain James Shadoan. MAST spent the day with 10News demonstrating how they perform the task of solving an arson. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The U.S. Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy offloaded 5,100 pounds of seized cocaine Friday, worth an estimated wholesale value of million.The drugs were brought off Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Edmonton at Naval Base San Diego.The crews aboard the HMCS Edmonton were able to capture vessels smuggling the drugs in the Eastern Pacific in 49 days, detaining eight suspected smugglers.“Criminals don’t recognize international borders,” said Vice Adm. Linda Fagan, USCG Pacific area Commander. “I am particularly just excited to see this level of effort. It is a really hard mission to execute.”A U.S. Coast Guard law enforcement attachment was on board the Edmonton and the crews worked hand in hand as one team to make the drug busts.Once the drugs are offloaded, they will be turned over to the DEA. 837

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The relatives of a toddler who died from E. Coli he contracted from San Diego County Fair animals held a fundraiser for his parents Saturday night. The benefit to help the family of 2-year-old Jedidiah King Cabezuela started at 4 p.m. at Rosie O’Grady’s restaurant in Normal Heights. Jedidiah’s great uncle Ed Sanford told 10News the boy suffered stomach problems four days after visiting the fair despite washing his hands after visiting the petting zoo. Over the next three days, Jedidiah was in and out of the emergency room before the symptoms worsened. His kidneys began failing, and he died June 24. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The plaques at the Hillcrest pride monument have been restores after being vandalized in February. According to the Hillcrest Business Association, the repairs cost roughly ,500. All the money came through donations from local businesses, the association said. The plaques were vandalized in early February. Pictures show faces and the pride flag scratched out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The University of California San Diego is planning to make a new first impression. New renderings show the schools intentions of building a "‘grand entrance" to attract more students and people from San Diego. A 3,000 seat amphitheater, a six-building student center with retail and restaurants are just some of the things showcased in the new plans. “There is hardly a thing that exists in the Gaslamp or Balboa that doesn’t exist here,” said UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla on the renderings. UCSD believes public transportation that’s being built near and on-campus will help with the future influx of people they want checking out their amenities. The blue line trolley and the three stations around the area are forecasted to be completed by 2021. “We want to be one more destination to the San Diego experience,” added Khosla, “we’re gonna change this campus to have these things so students can hang out and the community will come here to hang out too.” The price tag is still being worked out but it’s expected to cost well into the hundreds of millions of dollars. 1100
