BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's railway authorities said Wednesday that it would put 315 more trains into service on Wednesday to cope with Lunar New Year travel demand, compared with 159 on Tuesday.About 3.7 million passengers hit the rails on Tuesday, up from 2.29 million on Monday, the Ministry of Railways said in a statement on its website.The ministry expected a post-festival travel peak on Friday.The country's trains carried a total of 83.46 million passengers from Jan. 8 to 22, up 7.9 percent from a year earlier, the ministry said in a statement issued on Tuesday.The 40-day Spring Festival travel season kicked off on Jan. 8 this year, with hundreds of millions of people, mainly migrant workers and college students, heading home for the most important festival in China.A total of 3.16 billion passenger trips are expected during the year's travel rush, up 9.1 percent from a year earlier. Of those journeys, 235 million are likely to be made by train, up 6.1 percent year-on-year.The Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year, falls on Jan. 23 this year. 

NEW YORK, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Thursday a new recommendation that doctors offer every person with an HIV diagnosis antiretroviral treatment to help them live longer and prevent transmission.This marks a change from the current practice that treatment only be offered to those who show signs of damage to their immune systems, said the mayor during the annual World AIDS Day commemorative ceremony at Gracie Mansion. "Over the past ten years HIV diagnoses and deaths in New York City have seen a dramatic decline," said Mayor Bloomberg. "Steady progress in our fight against HIV has turned what used to be a death sentence into a disease that can be prevented and, with antiretroviral therapy, managed.The annual death toll from HIV in the city is down by more than a third: 933 deaths in 2009Despite this progress, however, more than 110,000 people in New York City are infected with HIV, more than in any other U.S. city and about 75 percent of all cases in the New York State.Figures from the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) showed that HHC has tested more than one million New Yorkers for HIV since 2005 when the public hospitals and health centers began offering HIV screening as a routine part of medical care for patients aged 13 to 64.

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Google seems to get no blessings for a good start for its New Year resolutions as the Internet search giant got an earful of complaints about its new social search service and felt mortified by a customer-poaching scandal in its Kenyan division.On Tuesday, Google announced "search plus your world" to deliver personalized search results by embedding its social service Google+ to its search engine.Although Google called it as "a beautiful journey begins," competitors and industry watchers said it was "a bad day for the Internet." They accused the company of using its dominant search engine to promote its own social networking site by giving Google+ pages and profiles an artificially prominent position in search results.The search giant first had a public bickering with Twitter which issued a statement on Tuesday saying that "As we've seen time and time again, news breaks first on Twitter. We're concerned that as a result of Google's changes, finding this information will be much harder for everyone."Google on Wednesday made a statement on its official Google+ page, saying that "We're a bit surprised by Twitter's comments because they chose not to renew their agreement with us last summer." The agreement, in which Twitter gave Google access to public tweets, expired last July and was not renewed.Twitter fired back by demonstrating the inefficiency of the new Google search feature. Twitter general counsel Alex Macgillivray tweeted a page of Google search results for the search term "@WWE" which did not include World Wrestling Entertainment's Twitter page, but Google+ page.Macgillivray noted that with 792,642 followers on Twitter compared with 24,900 followers on Google+, WWE's Twitter page is a more relevant social source than Google page and should be presented in Google's search results.Facebook, Google+'s major rival, has been remaining silent this week publicly while its employees criticized Google's moves in public status updates. BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- An experimental drug that can remove amyloid plaques from the brains of Alzheimer's patients is being developed by Swiss Roche Holding AG in a small early-stage study, according to a report published in the Archives of Neurology on Monday.Researchers suspect the build-up of such plaques may be a cause of the memory robbing disease, although that theory has yet to be definitively proved. Gantenerumab, a biotech drug designed to bind to amyloid plaques in the brain and remove them, is being targeted at the early stages of Alzheimer's with the hope it can slow progression of the disease while patients are still able to function.The Phase I study of 16 Alzheimer's patients tested gantenerumab at two doses against a placebo over six months of treatment.The Roche drug led to a dose-dependent reduction of brain amyloid, while amyloid load increased in patients receiving a placebo, the report said.The next step will be to investigate whether removal of brain amyloid translates into clinical benefit for patients at doses of the experimental drug that are well tolerated and safe, the report said.Much larger trials and further study will be needed to fully understand how gantenerumab works and whether it can stave off Alzheimer's, said the report.Roche is approaching the disease far earlier because amyloid accumulates for 15 years before dementi.
