(KGTV) -- Police arrested a 33-year-old transient in connection with a series of fires set in a river bottom area of Chula Vista since early summer.Chula Vista police said Alejandro Gonzalez was taken into custody Sunday after officers responded to a reported brush fire near the 1700 block of Fourth Avenue.According to police, Gonzalez was spotted by officers “walking quickly away from the scene of the fire.” Officers made contact with him and during questioning they found Gonzalez “in possession of several lighters.”Gonzalez was described as a transient known to frequent Chula Vista’s river bottom area.In a news release, police said: “During questioning by officers, Gonzalez admitted to intentionally setting several brush fires in the river bottom area over the past 5 months. Gonzalez claimed he was setting the fires due to hearing voices. Gonzalez was taken into custody by officers and later booked into county jail on multiple counts of arson.”Police linked Gonzalez to the following fires:May 24: 2300 Faivre StreetJune 14: 2300 Faivre StreetSept. 16: Third Ave. and Beyer St.Sept. 20: 1700 Fourth Ave.These fires erupted in the river bottom area since April, but investigators have not located or identified a person connected to them:April 30: Fourth Ave. and Beyer St.June 5: 1700 Fourth Ave.June 13: Fourth Ave. and Main St.Aug. 14: 100 Jacqua St.Meanwhile, Chula Vista police and fire investigators are still trying to determine who is responsible for setting a series of fires in the city from Sept. 17-19. And with malware attacks, unencrypted data and third-party breaches, there will likely be more this holiday shopping season.“Cyber criminals are very well aware of the current situation and they are going to do everything they can to take advantage of it,” he said.According to the FBI, cyber crime has increased by 400% this year. But there are things consumers can do to protect themselves.Consider identity protection services. These companies can monitor many data sources, including credit files, social media and the dark web.Enable two-factor authentication for every online account you have that offers it, and call the three major credit services to freeze your credit.“I think that your credit should be regularly frozen except when you go about getting a new home mortgage or getting a car loan,” said Daswani. “You can always unfreeze it just before you do any of those activities.”Another vulnerability that Daswani says is important to pay attention to is your home router.“If you bought your home router and you just hooked it up and you didn't say change the password on it, then attackers can take advantage of those commonly used default passwords and hack into your home router,” he said. “And once they've done that, they can control anything and everything.”With increased remote working, learning and online shopping experts say a cyber pandemic could be the next catastrophic global event. (KGTV) – More than 300 South Bay parents and students attended a school safety forum Monday night.The Sweetwater Union High School District and Chula Vista police held the meeting at Chula Vista High School’s Performing Arts Center.“We certainly had some questions, we pinged our kids on what drills are being done on their campuses,” said Ricky Gallegos, who has two kids that attend high schools in the district.School officials and police assured parents that they practice and prepare for the unthinkable. But police were also candid about their limited resources. They have 10 school resource officers for 61 campuses and more than 51,000 students in Chula Vista.  Police asked parents for their help by reminding them to be involved with their kids and school community and to report whatever doesn't sound right. They also told them about the “P-3 Anonymous Tip App” which was launched within the past year. They said it there have been more than 400 tips made and law enforcement removed 13 guns from San Diego County Schools as a result of the app.“I think it’s petty cool, especially that it’s anonymous because I know some students are worried that they’ll talk to someone else,” Leira Gardea, a sophomore at Chula Vista High School said.Mental health was also a big topic of discussion. The Sweetwater Union High School District says they have 13 therapists and assured parents they do their best to disturbed or troubled youth the help they need.Chula Vista Police is holding another school safety forum next week.
