SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) is introducing a pilot program aimed at reducing fines and plans to move to a zero-emission fleet by 2040.MTS' Board of Directors approved the pilot program recently that will give fare violators new options to pay citations and lower fines. Under the new policy starting in September:Passengers have 120 days to pay fines to MTS in-person at the Transit Store or by mail;Passengers who can't pay a fine can instead perform 3-4 hours of community service through the San Diego Food Bank, with more organizations potentially added later;Passengers can appeal a fare violation within 15 days of the citation;Only citations not paid within 120 days will proceed to criminal courts.The transportation agency says it also plans to convert 800 buses to zero-emissions, most of which will be electric, by 2040.Currently, MTS' zero-emissions pilot program includes eight electric buses, and infrastructure and hardware for 12 new charging stations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several US Navy Sailors put on their uniforms on their days off to help deliver meals to San Diego-area military veterans. Meals on Wheels President Debbie Case said they deliver 500,000 meals every year and about 42 percent of those meals go to veterans.“To see the active duty and the respect that they have for these veterans is incredible,” said Case.Meals on Wheels makes 1,400 deliveries every day. That means more than 500 are for veterans.Case added they also started delivering to disabled veterans no matter how old they are or when they ended their service. 610

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University says 400 students have confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus.The university said Tuesday that, since August 24, 396 students have tested positive for COVID-19. Four other students have probable cases of the virus.The update comes one day after the school extended its stay-at-home order for on-campus residents through September 14. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University is warning students that they will need to be re-vaccinated against meningitis after Walgreens gave out shots at non-optimal temperature.According to The Daily Aztec, Walgreens recently discovered that the meningococcus B vaccines, given to 350 students on October 5 and 8, weren’t given at the right temperature.The company says its reaching out to students who received them. The program recognizes schools based on performance and progress on state indicators.
