California has become the first US state to ban the sale of animal fur products.Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation Friday that will make it illegal to sell, donate or manufacture new fur products in the state.The bill, authored by state assemblymaker Laura Friedman, applies to all new clothing, handbags, shoes and other items made with fur. Those who violate the law would be subject to civil penalties.Used fur and taxidermy products are exempt from the ban, along with leather, cowhide and shearling. BLOOMINGTON, Minnesota — A family visiting the Mall of America last week has since been spending time at the Children's Minnesota Hospital with its 5-year-old son, who is recovering after being the randomly chosen victim of a heinous crime.Police said a man unknown to the family grabbed the 5-year-old boy and threw him over the third-floor balcony inside the mall, allowing him to forcefully fall 40 feet to the ground.The child survived and is undergoing intensive health care — he has been hospitalized since the incident April 12.The man who has admitted to harming the boy is 24-year-old Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, who said he had been looking for someone to kill. He told police he was tired of being rejected by women at the mall and this act was out of that anger.The child's mom told authorities at the scene the family was outside of the Rainforest Cafe when Aranda approached them and picked up the child without warning.The man had already been banned from the Mall of America in his past: He was twice convicted in 2015 for assaults he committed at the shopping center.Aranda is charged with attempted homicide.A 1142

It has left thousands of orphan children and adoptive families in limbo. Last summer, Robin and Walt Huston decided they wanted to share their lake house home with a child in need.“We just decided to add to our family,” said Robin Huston. “We think we have enough to give to another child.”The Hustons are pre-approved to adopt and have been working with an international agency that specializes in placing children with hearing loss or deafness.Walt Huston’s parents and grandparents were deaf. “My first language was sign language,” said Walt. “And then I met Robin. She knew sign and then we both decided we wanted a deaf child.”The child they selected is 13-year-old Zhou Ji. Born hearing impaired, he’s waited his entire life for someone to choose him. “[They] showed us some pictures of him and our hearts just melted,” said Walt. “And we wanted him from that point on.”But the eruption of the coronavirus has brought dozens of adoptions like theirs to a crushing halt. Zhou Ji is living in an orphanage under lockdown in Hubei province, the epicenter of the Wuhan virus outbreak. “Yes. At first, Hillary Slusser thought she had the flu.She hadn't been feeling well for a couple weeks but, after getting really sick at work, she went home and took not one, but three pregnancy tests. Just to be sure.Long story short, she was pregnant. But she wasn't the only one.14 nurses, two doctors and one social worker are all expectingBefore Slusser had even publicly announced her pregnancy, her friend and fellow nurse in the Emergency Department at Vanderbilt University's medical center posted her sonogram online.A week later, another nurse in their department posted that she was expecting, too.A week later, it was another nurse.Now, there are 17 people in her department who are pregnant -- 14 nurses, two doctors and one social worker -- all due between July and December. And, with others having had babies earlier in the year, Slusser said there would be over 20 births in the department by the end of 2019."By the time it got to be 17, everybody was just like, 'There is something going,'" Slusser told CNN. "But it was very exciting to be sharing this with all the girls."For the majority of the women, this will be their first child, which makes the occasion even more special.Everyone is pitching in so they can keep doing their jobsWith 17 pregnancies, though, comes 17 months-long absences from work. Slusser is taking 16 weeks off, but she said not everyone is that fortunate. Most are taking 12, and the department has already sent out an email asking for delivery dates in preparation for the absences to come.The department has been very supportive, Slusser said, with people taking on extra weight. Most of the women work in trauma, which she said can be labor intensive. Staff members must wear heavy protective gear beneath their gown, along with gloves, a mask, an eye shield and a hairnet, all just to protect from blood and body fluids. But others in the department have been helping."Even our attending physicians help lift patients over so I don't have to do that," Slusser said. "Little things like that make us still be able to do our jobs."It's still stressful, and Slusser said she does get a bit more tired throughout her shift.
