The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is looking into the amount of a potential cancer-causing ingredient in the drugs. Zantac is just one of the meds discovered to have NDMA in it. A doctor said this is a serious situation but likely a precautionary move. “It’s a real issue,” said gastroenterologist Dr. Niket Sonpal. “Now the question is, and the research isn’t really definitive, on how much exposure in the short term or in the long term actually leads to ... we simply just know right now that NDMA is associated with cancer but the quantification isn’t clear.” NDMA also got heart and blood pressure meds pulled from shelves. Virtual reality could soon play a role in helping during childbirth. Some women are watching relaxing scenery and listening to soothing sounds during labor with VR goggles. It’s part of the research being done at Cedars-Sinai, a medical center in Los Angeles. The research is being done to see if VR can help ease pain as labor gets more intense. “What we did find was that women found it very helpful,” says Dr. Melissa Wong, who specializes in OB/GYN and maternal fetal medicine at Cedars-Sinai. “That women were describing it … one of my favorite descriptions of it was a woman (who) spoke about it as being like a virtual doula." That's some of the early feedback from women who took part in the study.Wong says there were some women who found the headset isolating because you can’t see others. But she thinks VR could be useful, whether someone is using pain medication or not. “I think it has the potential for the woman who wants to defer her epidural,” Wong says. “And then the other thing is, there are women who also don’t get complete relief from an epidural or who still feel significant anxiety even after an epidural.”The full results of the study will include the pain management scores and will be released in February 2020. 1255

A "partial equipment failure" involving a jet bridge at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) in Maryland on Saturday left six people injured.The airport tweeted that the six people were taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. The jet bridge, an extendable hallway stretching from the terminal to the plane, was at Gate E-10 for Southwest Airlines Flight 822, according to the airline.Southwest Airlines said the flight arrived at BWI from Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, with a request for paramedics to meet it to check out a passenger's "onboard medical situation." While medics were helping the passenger outside the aircraft, the airline said the jet bridge "experienced a failure."The remaining passengers got off the plane using stairs."We are working swiftly to assist all passengers and crew," Southwest said in a statement to CNN.The BWI Fire and Rescue Department responded, along with mutual aid, the tweet added.The jet bridge failure at BWI Airport is "under investigation," according to another tweet from the airport.The bridge will remain closed until the investigation is over, the tweet said. More than 60 kids have been diagnosed with measles in Washington, and the vast majority of them did not have a measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. If passed, two bills in the state’s legislature would prohibit parents from opting out of vaccines for philosophical reasons. Cindy Sharpe, with the Washington State Medical Association, supports the bills. "Every child that gets a vaccination protects another child who can’t be vaccinated,” says Sharpe. Susie Olson-Corgan, with Informed Choice Washington, opposes the bills.
