CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A woman accused of stealing a car containing two young children from outside a Lincoln Park cell phone store and driving to the U.S.-Mexico border, pleaded not guilty today to kidnapping and child abduction charges.RELATED: Police: Woman arrested after stealing car with kids inside, trying to cross border into Mexico?Leslie Esparanza Saenz, 26, was ordered held without bail pending a review hearing next Wednesday.  The father of the 8-year-old girl and 3-year-old boy parked his gold Hyundai Excel outside the Cricket Wireless shop in the 200 block of Euclid Avenue about 12:15 p.m. Monday and went into the business by himself, leaving the vehicle unlocked and its engine running, according to San Diego police.   Moments later, a woman who appeared to be in her late teens got into the car and drove off to the east on Imperial Avenue with the children still inside, Officer Luis Roman said.Police searched for the stolen car and missing children until shortly before 2 p.m., when the Hyundai arrived at the San Ysidro Port of Entry at the southern terminus of Interstate 5.There, federal agents who had gotten a be-on-the-lookout bulletin regarding the auto theft and kidnapping took the driver  - who was later identified as Saenz -- into custody without incident.   Authorities then reunited the children, who had suffered no injuries during the ordeal, with their father and returned his car to him, Roman said.Police have not established a motive for the alleged kidnapping. 1553

(KGTV) — New businesses are set to call the Otay Ranch Town Center home in the coming months. Just a few months ago, the mall had more than a dozen empty storefronts and employees at the mall called it a ghost town. The new businesses moving in include Novo Brazil Brewing, Planet Fitness, and Barons Market.LONGFORM: Vacant storefronts reflect mall struggles at Otay Ranch Town CenterBrookfield Property Partners took over full ownership of the mall six weeks ago. It was a part of a larger merger across the country. The mall's general manager, Steven Sayers, sat down with 10News."Nothing was going wrong with the property at all. It was just, some of it was just timing with expiring leases and unfortunately, some tenants just left," says Sayers.Sayers says these new businesses were already in the works before the merger. (KGTV) - A Chula Vista woman says an attempted purse snatching at her front door led to her being dragged into the street.Around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday on Kelso Court, surveillance video shows a vehicle stopping in the middle of the cul-de-sac. A person appears to gets out on the passenger side and linger near the car.At the same time and feet away, Shaun McMahon was in her car, parked in her driveway. When she got out of the car, she was carrying a bag, food items and her purse."When I got to my front door, I noticed in my right peripheral vision, a person was there," said McMahon.Her cameras captured a still image of the moment. She says a lean, dark-haired man, possibly in his 20s, grabbed at her purse."Held down on my purse, but it swung around because he pulled so hard," said McMahon.Everything else she was holding went flying, but she held fast to her purse."Dragging me towards my grass ... I hung on for dear life. I was yelling 'Let go!'" said McMahon. "It was instinct. I wasn't letting go. This was somebody violating me, stealing from me. I had to fight back."McMahon says she was dragged some 75 feet - across her lawn and into the street - as she continued to scream. With the purse coming apart, the man finally let go, and jumped in the parked car, which then took off.McMahon was left with a swollen ankle, a bruised back and a lot of questions. Among them: why was she targeted in an apparent drive-by purse snatching in front of her home? Police say this appears to be an isolated incident.McMahon plans to buy a new camera system and pepper spray."I never thought I should be concerned walking into my home. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The City of Chula Vista is teaming up with local high schools to help beautify one of its most important corridors.Students from High Tech High began painting a mural Tuesday on a business near Broadway and E Street, the first of five new student-painted murals planned along the Broadway corridor this year.Broadway is the highest revenue-producing corridor in the city, said Chula Vista councilmember Jill Galvez, but a 2019 survey by the Institute for Public Strategies highlighted community concerns with graffiti and vandalism. In the survey of 160 businesses along Broadway, more than 70 percent said graffiti and vandalism were a top concern.Galvez challenged high schools to paint city utility boxes last year and says it’s been successful at deterring graffiti.“Artists respect other artists’ work,” she said.“We’ve already seen the delight of people driving by to see beautiful artwork. It brightens your day. This is going to be the first of many projects along Broadway,” she added.In addition to High Tech High, she said Castle Park High School, Chula Vista High School, Hilltop High School and MAAC Community Charter School are working on murals.Two classes of seniors led by art teacher Chelsea Smith. She said students came up with designs then voted on their favorites as a class. Local businesses then voted on the finalists.High Tech High students are covering two sides of Wild Woolly's Saloon, a frequent target for taggers. One side will depict a floral scene, the other will feature beach imagery and a classic car."I think it's great. I hope it puts a stop to the graffiti," said Autumn Hammer, the bar's manager. Now, with nearly half of Ohio school districts conducting classes only over the internet and most in-person socialization sharply limited, it’s even more of a catch-22. How much is too much? How little is too little?Children’s Hospital pediatrician Dr. John Hutton studies the effect of technology on children and adolescents, and even he isn’t sure.“Screens have become such a huge part of kids’ lives in a very short period of time that we really don't know a lot of the longer-term effects,” he said Friday.The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has found some correlation between extended screen time and trouble with sleep, mental health, and school performance.Hutton said it’s likely not all the same. Using a laptop, smartphone, or tablet for school, as most Ohio children have done since March, doesn’t necessarily have the same effect as using the same device for social media or games.Still, he encouraged families to closely examine the amount of time they and their children spend using screens every day. He recommended setting aside screen-free times, such as during meals, and encouraging battery-free activities such as reading or playing outside as a healthy complement to children’s daily routines."I think it's very important,” he said. “I think every family is going to have something that's realistic for them.
