SAN DIEGO (CNS) — Two men who were allegedly running an illegal hash oil lab inside a Lemon Grove warehouse were charged by federal prosecutors Friday.Adam Ledesma and Jared Hoffman are charged with manufacturing around 166 kilograms of hash oil inside the building raided by Drug Enforcement Administration agents on Thursday.The hash oil, valued at more than .75 million, was seized along with ``sophisticated laboratory equipment'' valued at more than million, according to the DEA.In the criminal complaint filed Friday, DEA Special Agent James Gillis wrote that DEA agents regularly surveilled the building over the past month, and observed Ledesma and Hoffman regularly entering the building.There were ``no visible indications of commercial or manufacturing operations operating out of the building,'' according to Gillis, who said that on May 14, he found a number of paint buckets, stainless steel pots and other items he alleged were consistent with manufacturing cannabis inside two dumpsters in the building's loading dock. The building's electricity bills dating back to last May were also ``excessive and consistent with the amount of electricity required to operate equipment commonly used for concentrated cannabis extraction and/or indoor marijuana cultivation.''Search warrants were served Thursday for the premises, which has no license for marijuana cultivation from either the state or San Diego County, according to the DEA.Authorities said it was the sixth hash oil lab in San Diego County dismantled by federal authorities within the past three weeks. Explosions at two of those labs sent four people to hospitals with serious burns, the DEA said.The agency alleged that the Lemon Grove lab was in particular danger of an explosion or fire, due to high combustible gas readings at the premises, as well as a large amount of ethanol found at the lab. 1886

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A federal judge has ordered the San Diego Police Department to stop citing people for living in their vehicles.The decision comes after a lawsuit was filed against the city by a group of homeless people and their advocates.On Tuesday, United States District Judge Anthony Battaglia agreed with the plaintiff’s argument that the city’s municipal code was too vague in defining what constitutes habitation of a vehicle.Tristia Bauman, an attorney with the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty which helped work on the case told 10News, “we are very happy and pleased that the judge understood what we were arguing.”However, that was only one half of the lawsuit. The other half targeted the city’s municipal ordinance that outlaws RV parking from 2-6a.m. Known as the Nighttime RV Ordinance, or Oversized Vehicle Ordinance (OVO), the judge denied the request to enjoin it, saying the same argument did not apply.In the decision, Battaglia wrote “while the court sympathies that this Ordinance leaves Plaintiffs with nowhere to park between these hours and is decidedly unfair, the law is not ambiguous, unclear or vague in any way.”A spokesperson for city attorney Mara Elliot declined to comment beyond saying they “will review the ruling and advise our client.”An early neutral evaluation conference had been scheduled for Thursday with all the parties. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A former San Diego County Sheriff’s Captain pleaded guilty in federal court on Tuesday to illegally trafficking firearms.In a gray suit and a mask, Marco Garmo made his way into the downtown courthouse. ABC10 News’ cameras were not allowed in the courtroom, where Garmo stood before the judge and pleaded guilty to one count of engaging in dealing firearms without a license.The case stems from last year's bombshell allegations that five defendants including Garmo, prominent jeweler Leo Hamel, and former Sheriff's Lieutenant Fred Magana were involved in a massive gun running operation.ABC10 News was there as agents raided Leo Hamel's Fine Jewelers in Old Town.Hamel and Magana were charged with working with Garmo to re-sell guns and falsify records. Both have since pleaded guilty.The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Tuesday that the cases for the other two defendants are still pending.According to prosecutors, Garmo used his position to buy and re-sell guns that are intended only for law enforcement, not the general public, so-called off roster guns. Over six years, investigators say he sold more than 100 firearms for cash or to collect favors from those who might support him in a future run for San Diego Sheriff.Garmo faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a fine of 0,000 and supervised release for up to three years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Coronado gym is taking on a novel concept, devising a bracket-style challenge involving acts of kindness.Founder Nick Merrill grew up on Whidbey Island, north of Seattle, Washington and giving is in his blood. Merrill said his dad was a founder of Hearts and Hammers, a non-profit that helps build homes for those in need.After college he met his wife, who shared his love of fitness. "I met my wife through working out, we started running marathons together and ended up doing some charity runs where we ran across Washington State where we earned a bunch of money for some charities in Africa, built a school, built some wells," Merrill said.Naturally when they opened the doors of Sweat Equity in Bellevue six years ago, they wanted to marry their gym with good deeds. They opened their Coronado gym about two years ago.Every year they have challenges to engage their members. Each March, they play off of the NCAA's March Madness bracket competition.Each team of four earns points through workouts and "each round will have a specific random act of kindness that everyone will do," Merrill said that will earn them points as well.In years past, it's been anything from buying a cup of coffee for someone, to putting change in an expired parking meter. One year they flexed their giving muscles pretty hard, "we brought in over 2,000 lbs of food basically in one day." Merrill said that was for Northwest Harvest in Washington.This year they hope is their biggest year yet."It's so rewarding, it makes you feel so good and it makes the person you helped out feel so good," Merrill said.The competition starts March 16 and ends April 1, with the winner receiving a trophy for their efforts. 1721
