When it comes to flooding, the problems most people think about are washed-out roads and underwater homes. But after rainstorms in Missouri and Iowa caused nearby rivers to rise, a family in Northeast Arkansas stumbled upon a 9-foot alligator far from its natural habitat -- in their rice field.Frank Pierce and his family told CNN affiliate WMC-TV that they found the massive gator basking in the sun on Thursday. The family lives about 90 miles from the Mississippi River and in the same county as one of its tributaries, the White River."Me and my brother and my wife and daughter were going fishing and we come around the curve and he was laying out there in the field," Pierce said.Pierce called the police, and the Jackson County Sheriff David Lucas told WMC-TV that they didn't believe the story at first.Lucas said, "When we first got the call, we thought well this is some kind of prank or a log or something because you just don't see gators this far north."But when they got to the scene, they were surprised to see that the call was, in fact, real. The gator greeted law enforcement in the same place it was spotted by the Pierce family.Lucas called the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, who said that the siting was due to the overflowing rivers. According to the National Wildlife Federation, alligators are more commonly found in Southeast states such as Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and Texas.CNN Meteorologist Monica Garrett said water from the Mississippi River has been high for weeks and flooding will continue to be a concern into June. The ACFC said it's not uncommon when rivers flood for alligators to leave their usual homes. The commission also found another 4-foot gator nearby while trying to capture the larger animal. However, the gator escaped, and the commission representative told WMC-TV there's a chance no one will ever see it again. 1879

Whether it's searching for inner peace, getting good exercise, or simply enjoying nature, more and more people are getting outdoors. Popular trails attract hundreds of people a day, so park officials are working to find new ways to manage large crowds. A National Natural Landmark in Colorado has created a system to do just that."Hanging Lake is one of Colorado's most unique gems. If you were to Google Hanging Lake, it is probably likely to pop up on one of the top 10 locations to hike in Colorado," Deputy District Ranger Marcia Gilles said.Hanging Lake trail is a 1.2-mile trek to a lake that hangs in a valley. Its unique characteristics have turned it into one of nearly 600 National Natural Landmarks across the country. According to Heather Eggleston, with National Parks Service, there are NNL locations all over the U.S., big and small."A National Natural Landmark is an area that is recognized as containing outstanding biological or geological features, and each site really is an important example of America's natural heritage," Eggleston said.Valley of Fire in Las Vegas, Diamond Head on the island of Oahu, and Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia are a few other popular locations.Hanging Lake stands out because of its hanging gardens and minerals in the water that give it a gorgeous turquoise color. However, each year crowds have continued to grow. Now, the trail has started to get overrun with tourists, impacting the lake's fragile ecosystem."Visitors are coming from everywhere to visit this site because they're hearing about it," Gilles said. "The growth of Hanging Lake really took off with social-media influence, and when one person goes, they find out from their friends and see a picture and think 'I wanna go there.'"Gilles says the trail has seen a 50 percent increase in visitation the past three years. "On busy days, you would have 1,300 people hiking Hanging Lake," Gilles said. There was a loss of vegetation on the sides of the trail, people were littering, and parking at the bottom of the trail was nearly impossible."I heard before it was hard to find parking, you had to get here like super early," hiker Christina Tran said. It's a problem other NNLs are experiencing as well. Word of mouth travels fast, and a good time shared on social media travels even faster. Valley of Fire has tourists flocking to Las Vegas at a rate that's put a strain on that outdoor wonder. Same goes for Diamond Head and other NNLs this time of year. But the folks in charge of Hanging Lake have come up with solution. It involves a new system, requiring a permit and shuttle reservation.Six hundred and fifteen people are allowed on the hike each day. After reserving your spot online, you pick up your permit at the Hanging Lake Welcome Center and hop on a shuttle. Before the shuttle system was in place, Gilles said there was often a long line of cars waiting for a parking spot, or people would park illegally, and sometimes there were even fist fights.A little extra effort comes in making a reservation, but the hope is to preserve the national natural landmark, while also keeping hikers happy with the experience. "I mean there's pros and cons to both, but I'm not complaining about this system. I think it's convenient, and that way it preserves the land, doesn't have people parking everywhere," hiker Hannah Richard said."It's pretty tricky, and so you really wouldn't want to be stuck behind people or in tight groups. You want to be able to move freely to safely climb up there. So I think it's a pretty good system," hiker Denise Brooks said. Some parts are also blocked off, and signs have been added to help educate hikers on the best way to respect the land.Because each National Natural Landmark is owned by a variety of public and private landowners, there's no data to show how many NNLs are dealing with the issues that come from large masses of people.Since the new system has been implemented at Hanging Lake, the trail is slowly getting restored, and hikers say they can safely enjoy the trail, as nature intended it to be. Twitter "hid" a tweet by President Donald Trump on Friday morning, saying that the message violated the platform's rules about "glorifying violence."The tweet was in reference to protests in Minneapolis regarding the death of George Floyd. Trump threatened to send in the National Guard if Minnesota officials could not reign in rioting and added that "when the looting starts, the shooting starts." He also refered to looters as "THUGS."According to 463

What's more relaxing than a healthy dose of pilates ... and puppies?A pilates studio in central New York is now offering 'Puppy Pilates', a class where for , you can do pilates while playing with puppies. While exercising with furry friends should be enough for most animal lovers, this unique pilates class comes with a good cause. All of the proceeds will be going to Clear Path for Veterans' Canine Program. The program trains dogs to become service animals for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).Terri Todd, the owner of Precision Pilates in Fayetteville, and a mother of three, said the response has been "fantastic." The studio will hold two sessions on October 27.Her own son, Ryan Woodruff, is a US Marine Corps veteran and the Canine Program director at Clear Path for Veterans. He said the overall cost to raise and properly train a puppy to become a service dog is at least ,000."You will never find a soldier that can afford that kind of investment," Todd told CNN. Clear Path for Veterans covers all costs to train the dogs, however, they rely on donations to keep the program running.Woodruff, an infantry rifleman who was deployed to Iraq twice before being honorably discharged in 2009, said his program's focus is training service dogs. These dogs are trained to aid veterans with PTSD, traumatic brain injuries or military sexual trauma."We have done scientific research showing that our training model significantly reduces symptoms associated with PTSD, decreases stress, increases self-compassion, and improves their overall quality of life," Woodruff said. The Canine Program is currently training eight dogs and will receive five more in February. Once the dogs become certified service animals, they are matched with veterans who adopt them when they're around 18 months old.Veterans also have the option to train their own dogs for 6 to 12 months with the Canine Program. However, not every one of those dogs become service dogs.Woodruff says he was inspired to work with service dogs for veterans because of his own dog, Harley."She changed my life and helped me discover my passion for dog training," Woodruff said. "She lost her life in a terrible accident and I continue to do the work I do in honor of her and what she taught me." 2293
