(KGTV) -- Dozens of dogs and cats landed in El Cajon today, after a flight from Louisiana to Gillespie Field. In July, rescue partners at Acadiana Animal Aid in Lafayette, LA helped rescue animals following floods in the area. Doctors are sounding the alarm on the rise in unvaccinated kids as we head into the winter months.Childhood vaccination rates have been fluctuating along with COVID cases.An immunology expert tells us he thinks parents are avoiding doctors' offices because of the pandemic.“They're just scared of gathering in groups and it makes sense, but pediatricians are doing their darndest to try and make sure that people are in as safe as a position as possible because it's important to get vaccinated. I mean it's not just COVID-19 that can kill you,” said Dr. Paul Offit, Professor of Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.Right now, Offit says his two biggest concerns are measles and whooping cough. Both are winter diseases.Although the measles had previously been eliminated in the United States, cases have been rising in recent years because of a lack of vaccinations.Offit says at least before we had a measles vaccine, it was actually much more likely to be deadly than COVID-19.There are tens of thousands of cases of whooping cough in the U.S. every year and children are most likely to die from it.There are also other bacteria out there that are less common but can cause things like meningitis or pneumonia.“We put these diseases aside because we're assuming they're gone. They're not gone, and let your immunizations drop far enough and we'll see them again,” said Offit.Offit says wearing masks and social distancing have helped keep the spread of some of these diseases, other than COVID-19, under control too.But he's concerned that once people are able to get a COVID-19 vaccine, they will immediately stop practicing those measures. 1670

EL CAJON (CNS) - One person was shot and another stabbed at a house party in El Cajon late Saturday night, police say. Several 911 calls came in to police at about 11:50 p.m. Saturday reporting a fight at a party on Andover Road just east of South Second Street, El Cajon Police Lt. Eric Taylor said.Callers reported that multiple people had been kicked out and drove off in a silver car before turning around and firing shots at partygoers who were still outside, Taylor said. One person, a woman in her 20s, was shot in the abdomen.She was taken to a local hospital and was undergoing surgery in stable condition, Taylor said.No one else was hit by gunfire, but when police arrived at the home, they found a man in his 50s had also been stabbed in the buttocks, according to Taylor.The suspects had already left by the time officers arrived, and no one was in custody as of Sunday afternoon. 902

(KGTV) - Surveillance video has recently captured multiple incidents of what appears to be a thief returning over and over to prey upon elderly residents of the Salvation Army apartment building in El Cajon.Apartment staff at the building on South Anza Street say there have been at least five robberies between October and Christmas Eve. Each appears to include the same thief."He's the lowest form of life in my book," building superintendent Alex Harmon told 10News. "To prey on the elderly. They've got walkers for crying out loud."In one incident captured on video, the man approached a 97-year-old woman taking a walk on the sidewalk outside the building. He was seen opening her bag, which was placed on her walker, then removing an item and walking away.The woman later told building staff that he had struck up a conversation about her walker and that she had offered him candy. She says he opened her bag and instead of taking candy, stole her wallet.In a separate incident, the suspected thief and what appears to be a lookout are seen carefully observing an elderly woman walking by. One man then turned and followed her around the corner. She told 10News that's when he raced up and grabbed her gold necklace, breaking off her gold cross, and running off.Multiple police reports have been filed with El Cajon Police Department, which is investigating. 1389

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - A young trick-or-treater sorting through her candy made a stunning discovery."They were excited. Loved Halloween and candy," said Jean Bilbrey.As with so many other families, Halloween night for the Bilbrey's three children - ages 11,9 and 4 - was a blur of costumes, front doors and a steady flow of treats. Their family started around Falmouth Drive and Virgina Court and walked for several hours, stopping by 30 to 50 homes. In all, they filled about six buckets' worth. This past weekend, the kids went about the task of sorting the candy."My middle daughter, who is nine, said 'Mom, Mom, I found something in my candy' and brought me a ring," said Bilbrey.It was a woman's ring, possibly a precious one. "Looks like a wedding band similar to mine. Possibly an anniversary band ... somebody wears on a hand that means something to somebody ... my first thought was we need to get this back to the owner. As a woman, my jewelry, I don't have much but what I do have is very important to me," said Bilbrey.The piece of jewelry likely slipped off while someone was handing out candy. Like any good mystery, there are a few clues, including the candy found next to the ring. "Candy corn and the Sour Patch candies. That's what she had in her hand was the candy corn," said Bilbrey.Bilbrey spread word of the ring on social media, but so far, she's come up empty."I'll keep it safe. I've got it here.
