SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State University reported 23 new student cases of COVID-19 Sunday, bringing the total number of cases to 621 since the fall semester began Aug. 24.University officials said they were aware of 617 confirmed cases among students and four probable cases. The university has not received any reports of faculty or staff who have tested positive since fall instruction began, SDSU health officials said. The majority of the 621 cases are students living off-campus in San Diego. About 75% of students testing positive live in off-campus housing not managed by the university, with 73% of the cases among the freshman and sophomore classes, officials said. The university said the information is based on cases reported to Student Health Services by an individual or by a public health official."As more private labs administering tests, a possibility exists that not all cases are being reported to Student Health Services," according to the SDSU COVID-19 website. "Anyone who receives a positive COVID-19 test should fill out the SDSU's online COVID-19 reporting form."For privacy reasons, SDSU does not report names, affiliations or health conditions of students, faculty or staff who test positive for COVID-19 unless a public health agency advises that there is a health and public safety benefit to reporting such details."The university will also not disclose the specific location of the individual who was infected for privacy reasons and also because avoiding the physical location does not inherently lower a person's risk of infection; maintaining healthy practices such as physical distancing, wearing a facial covering and washing your hands are the best methods to lower your risk," according to the website. The university extended its stay-at-home order for students, directing them to stay in their current residences, except for essential needs, through 9 a.m. Monday. Violations of the order may result in disciplinary action, the college said.Luke Wood, SDSU's vice president for student affairs and campus diversity, said the university was working with a security company to enforce public health code regulations. 2163

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Opening statements are scheduled Monday in the murder trial of a man accused in the 2015 shooting death of a customer during a robbery at a Clairemont-area gas station convenience store, as well as a shootout with police two days after the killing.Ahmed Hassan Mumin, 34, is charged with murder, robbery, burglary, and being a felon in possession of a firearm in connection with the April 16, 2015, death of 48-year-old Eric Schade. Mumin also faces a special circumstance allegation that the killing happened during the course of a robbery, meaning he faces life imprisonment without the possibility of parole if convicted. He's also charged with two counts of attempted murder on a peace officer for opening fire on two arresting officers in an April 18 shootout at a City Heights apartment. At his preliminary hearing, surveillance footage was shown allegedly depicting Mumin inside an Arco am/pm at around 3:45 a.m., pointing a gun at the clerk and demanding cash. The store clerk testified that the robber was wearing a dark beanie and a bandana covering his face. The clerk testified that he put the cash drawer on the counter. But Schade -- a neighborhood regular -- took a swipe at the robber's gun as if to push it out of his face, and Mumin took a step back and shot the victim once in the chest, prosecutors alleged. The footage shows the shooter rifling through the cash drawer, then fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash. Two days later, officers tracked Mumin to an apartment complex on Winona Avenue in City Heights. Police officers testified that Mumin hid behind a set of doors in a community room. As a detective tried one of the doors, the defendant opened fire from behind another door, prompting the detectives to return fire, according to testimony.Mumin was shot in the abdomen by police and hospitalized.Co-defendant Adan Ibrahim -- allegedly the getaway driver -- was previously charged with murder, though that count was dismissed earlier this year by San Diego County Superior Court Judge Kenneth K. So through application of the state's new felony murder rule. He still faces trial on robbery charges.Ibrahim's girlfriend, Kristine Mariano, was also in the getaway car during the robbery, according to prosecutors. She pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact earlier this year and awaits sentencing. 2365

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's Bumble Bee Foods filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Thursday, facing criminal fines and civil litigation after the company pleaded guilty to a price-fixing scheme with rival seafood companies Starkist Co. and Chicken of the Sea Inc.Bumble Bee filed for bankruptcy protection in Wilmington, Delaware, listing up to billion in both assets and liabilities, according to a Los Angeles Times report. FCF Fishery Co. is expected to acquire the company's assets for more than 0 million through a competitive bidding process. Bumble Bee is currently owned by Lion Capital, an English private equity firm. The company pleaded guilty to the price-fixing scheme in 2017, admitting that the three companies conspired to raise the price of canned and packaged tuna in the U.S. from 2011 to 2013. The U.S. Department of Justice levied an .5-million fine against Bumble Bee and later slashed it to million due to Bumble Bee's outstanding debts.RELATED: StarKist admits fixing tuna prices, faces 0-million fine"The division, along with our law enforcement colleagues, will continue to hold these companies and their executives accountable for conduct that targeted a staple in American households," Andrew Finch, then the Justice Department Antitrust Division's acting assistant attorney general, said when Bumble Bee pleaded guilty in May 2017.At that time, Bumble Bee argued the original fine could drive it to bankruptcy. The company's court documents show that it still owes some million of the fine and faces multiple class-action lawsuits and litigation from companies that distribute and sell its products.Bumble Bee was founded in 1899 by the Columbia River Packers Association, which officially introduced the Bumble Bee brand of canned seafood in 1910. The company expanded to San Diego in 1977 when it purchased the Harbor Industry cannery. After 12 years in Kearny Mesa, the company moved its headquarters back to downtown San Diego in 2014, where it currently resides adjacent to Petco Park. 2052

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State will seek to extend its recent dominance over Pac-12 opponents when it plays at Colorado Saturday after both teams' original opponents couldn't play because of COVID-19 issues. The Aztecs are 5-1 against the Pac-12 since 2016, including victories over Stanford in 2017 and Arizona State in 2018, who were both ranked in The Associated Press Top 25, and UCLA last season, San Diego State's first over the Bruins after 21 losses and a tie.The game matches the Aztecs' defense that is third among Football Bowl Subdivision teams allowing 269.4 yards per game against the Buffaloes' offense, 12th in the FBS in scoring, averaging 41.5 points.Colorado is 2-0 under first-year coach Karl Dorrell, a 1982 graduate of Helix Charter High School in La Mesa.San Diego State's scheduled game Friday at Fresno State was canceled Sunday due to COVID-19 contact tracing within the Bulldogs' program. The Mountain West Conference declared the game a no-contest and has no plans to reschedule it, conference officials said Sunday. The Buffaloes' scheduled game at USC was canceled Thursday by the Pac- 12 and declared a no-contest because USC did not have the minimum number of scholarship players available at a specific position group as a result of a number of positive COVID-19 cases and the resulting isolation of additional players under contact tracing protocols. As a contingency, Colorado athletic director Rick George earlier this week coordinated with his counterpart at San Diego State, John David Wicker, for the Aztecs to visit Boulder in case the issues that had arisen with USC did not improve or worsened."It is unfortunate that our game at Southern California had to be canceled, but as we all continue to maintain, the most important concern we all have is the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and staff," George said."After the Pac-12 CEO's created some requirements for possible non-conference opponents to fill any vacancies created by cancellations, we moved earlier this week to find a possible opponent to replace the Trojans. When San Diego State's game at Fresno State was canceled for similar reasons, I spoke with John David and we put an agreement in place if USC could not play."The game will be the season's first non-conference game for a Pac-12 team. The Pac-12 announced Nov. 19 that its CEO Group approved non-conference games, reversing a previous decision. The conference set the following criteria for a non-conference football opponent to be scheduled by a Pac-12 football team:All Pac-12 testing and related protocols must be adhered to by the non-conference opponent;the non-conference game will in all cases be a home game for the Pac-12 team, broadcast by a Pac-12 television partner; andif a Pac-12 opponent becomes available by the end of day Thursday in any given week, the conference game must be played in lieu of any non- conference game.Scheduling the Aztecs (3-2) means the Buffaloes will not be idle on consecutive weekends. Their planned game last Saturday against Arizona State was canceled due to COVID-19 issues in the Sun Devils' program.San Diego State lost to Colorado, 34-14, in the only game between the two teams on Sept. 7, 2002, in Boulder. 3244
