Cereal company General Mills announced on Thursday that its employees are eligible for up to 20 weeks of paid maternity leave under a new company policy, effective Jan. 1, 2019. Also part of the announcement, General Mills said it will offer up to 12 weeks for paid paternity and adoption leave for its employees. While the United States' Family Medical Leave Act requires most employers to allow staff to take up to 12 weeks off, the act does not require employers to pay employees for leave. General Mills said the new rules apply to its salaried and non-union employees. Other changes in family leave policy announced by General Mills include:      ● Caregiver Leave: A new benefit in 2019, General Mills will now offer caregivers a two-week paid leave for the care of immediate family members with a serious health condition. 882

(KGTV) - Monique Ramsey has struggled with weight most of her life."I'm 5'1, and so weight loss has always been something that's a struggle, and it's definitely a heredity component."Ramsey said diet and exercise were never enough."I think I've tried just about everything, and you know, it's hard to sort of feel like you're starving yourself through crazy diets and things like that," said Ramsey.RELATED: The DNA diet creates personalized diet plan for users; here’s how it worksIn July of 2017, she decided to try something new."This is a tool that is such a game-changer," said Ramsey.That tool is the Obalon Balloon System. Mark Brister invented the device at the Obalon Therapeutics manufacturing center in Carlsbad."There weren't a lot of technologies out there to help people who were just overweight. Most people had to wait until they were morbidly obese in order to be eligible for treatment so we decided to invent a product that would fit the middle ground," said Brister, who is the Chief Technology Officer at Obalon Therapeutics.Obalon is the only FDA approved swallowable gas-filled balloon for people roughly 30 to 100 pounds overweight. The patient will get three balloons over six to eight weeks."This is sort of like being able to have stomach stapling without having surgery," said Ramsey.Side effects after the first balloon is inserted can include nausea and cramping. (KGTV) - Vice President Mike Pence toured the US-Mexico border in Southern California Monday, answering questions about the migrant caravan waiting to apply for asylum.Nearly 200 Border Patrol agents joined the Vice President at the Imperial station in Calexico.Pence said the migrant caravan’s attempt to seek asylum was a direct result of weak immigration laws and a “porous border.”He called on Congress to close what he described as immigration loopholes. Pence also asked for an end to the current catch-and-release policy, and a crackdown on sanctuary cities.“All of this cries out for action and thanks to the leadership to President Donald Trump, we are protecting the American people along our southern border and we are building a wall,” said Pence.Pence toured the construction site of the border fence renovation and received an update on the progress.“This new wall is roughly two or three times taller than the wall that was here today. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - At the ripe age of 74, scientist Wladek Minor, PhD. is not slowing down anytime soon, especially when it comes to his research to better understand COVID-19.“This is the biggest danger I’ve seen in my lifetime,” said Minor. “This is a real danger, and we shouldn’t underestimate it.”Minor, who is also a professor at UVA’s Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics, recently made a new discovery in the fight against coronavirus.As the lead researcher, Minor and his team of scientists recently discovered a link between a coronavirus treatment and people with diabetes.They found the drug dexamethasone, which is used to lower the risk of death in patients with a severe case of the virus, might be less effective for treating patients with diabetes.“We were trying to explain why the action of dexamethasone is somewhat erratic,” Minor said. “It means it works for some people and [does] not necessarily work for other people.”Minor and his team analyzed data from 373 COVID-19 patients at a hospital from Wuhan, China.Their research determined how a type of protein in our blood, called serum albumin, picks up dexamethasone and carries it through the body.The scientists found that patients who died had lower levels of that protein than those who survived.Those who died also had higher levels of blood sugar, suggesting diabetes may make it difficult for patients to get the benefits of the drug.“We are trying to make as much impact on human life as possible,” said Minor.Dexamethasone has been shown to cut deaths by about 30% for COVID-19 patients who were on ventilators.The steroid was used to help treat President Donald Trump’s bout with the virus, along with other treatments and drugs including remdesivir, which was just approved by the FDA to use on all hospitalized patients.“COVID is now our enemy, and really, it’s the biggest enemy,” Minor said.Scientists said more research is needed to determine the best treatment for COVID-19 patients, especially for those who have diabetes.For more information on Minor’s research, click here.This story was first reported by Antoinette DelBel at WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. 2180
