Want to know how old your dog is in human years? A new study states that calculating every dog year isn't equal to 7 human years. That's because your dog ages differently than you.Researchers at the University of California San Diego’s school of medicine said in a news release that a 1-year-old dog is similar to a 30-year-old person. But a 4-year-old pup is identical to a 52-year-old human."The formula is based on the changing patterns of methyl groups in dog and human genomes — how many of these chemical tags and where they’re located — as they age," researchers said in the release. "Since the two species don’t age at the same rate over their lifespans, it turns out it’s not a perfectly linear comparison, as the 1:7 years rule-of-thumb would suggest."This graph formula, which was created from the study, will match up the age of your dog with the comparable human age.Lead researcher Trey Ideker said that dogs that are younger age faster compared to humans.“This makes sense when you think about it — after all, a nine-month-old dog can have puppies, so we already knew that the 1:7 ratio wasn’t an accurate measure of age," Ideker said. For the new study, which was published in the journal Cell Systems, samples of blood from 105 Labrador retrievers were studied.Researchers plan to study other dog breeds to see if their method holds up. 1359

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The man who prosecutors believe was the target of a murder for hire came face-to-face Tuesday with those charged: His estranged wife and her gun instructor.Greg Mulvihill described the moments leading up to him being shot, saying he didn't realize he'd been shot right away and at first he thought he felt something in his back even though he could see the sniper in front of him. The North County father described a bitter custody battle in which he was accused of everything from drug use to sexual assault and molestation of their young son.RELATED: Trial begins in Carlsbad murder-for-hire plotMulvihill says he went up a remote trail in Carlsbad on Sept. 1, 2016, out of desperation, fearing his ex-wife, Diana Lovejoy, would reopen their custody battle. He took a friend, a flashlight and a small aluminum baseball bat but he thought he was picking up documents from a private investigator.Instead, as he approached the spot off Rancho Santa Fe Road and Avenida Soledad, he shined his flashlight around and spotted someone dressed in camouflage pointing a long gun right at him. Before he knew what was happening he was hit once in the side, the bullet exiting out his back.In the courtroom Tuesday, his ex-wife and the man accused of firing the gun, her weapons instructor, sat quietly, Lovejoy crying at times and shaking her head at others. Mulvihill was cross-examined Tuesday and the trial will resume Wednesday morning. 1506

VISTA (KGTV) — A driver accused of crossing into wrong-way traffic and killing an Escondido cyclist turned to a witness after the crash and said, “I’m sorry,” before speeding off, according to court testimony Tuesday.Jamison Connor, 41, appeared in a Vista courtroom for a preliminary hearing on several charges. Judge Carlos Armour determined there is enough evidence against Connor to proceed to trial, which was tentatively set for June 2.Connor is accused in the hit-and-run crash that killed 36-year-old Kevin Lentz.RELATED: Suspect accused of hitting, killing Escondido cyclist makes court appearanceFriends mourn bicyclist killed in hit-and-run crashLentz was cycling with a group along La Honda Road north of El Norte Parkway when he was hit head-on Nov. 23, 2019.Officers initially arrested Connor on an unrelated parole warrant for suspected drug and weapons violations, but quickly linked him to the deadly crash.“I feel like the evidence is very, very strong and so that helps me be a little more confident that there will be justice in this,” said Devin Rickey, one of several friends who attended Tuesday’s preliminary hearing.RELATED: Grieving family learns of hit-and-run arrest on Thanksgiving holidayAn Escondido police officer testified at the hearing that after the crash, a witness tried to follow the fleeing sedan. VISTA (CNS) - A Carlsbad woman who fatally shot her husband during an argument while their children watched cartoons downstairs will not have her sentence reduced in light of a recent gun law.Julie Elizabeth Harper, 45, was convicted in October 2015 of second-degree murder in the death of her husband, Jason Harper. She was sentenced to 40-years-to-life in prison. This year, the 4th District Court of Appeal found Harper's case is affected by a new law (Senate Bill 620) that took effect in 2018. The law gives judges the ability to add a "gun enhancement" to a defendant's sentence because they used a gun in the crime.RELATED: Carlsbad woman convicted of killing husband could have years removed from sentenceIn sentencing Harper in January 2016, Bowman said her testimony that her husband, a popular math teacher and volleyball coach at Carlsbad High, came at her in a rage and that she shot him accidentally was "inherently untrustworthy and not worthy of belief."Harper's attorney, Gloria Collins, argued in court documents that the gunshot Harper fired was not an "execution-style" shot but rather a single shot that entered her husband's side and "unfortunately struck him in the heart."WATCH JULIE HARPER'S EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH 10NEWS (JAN. 2016): 1278

WASHINGTON — The United States has given the final go-ahead to the nation’s first COVID-19 vaccine, marking what could be the beginning of the end of an outbreak that has killed nearly 300,000 Americans.Vaccine distribution for health care workers and nursing home residents are expected to begin in the coming days after the Food and Drug Administration on Friday authorized an emergency rollout of what promises to be a strongly protective vaccine from Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech.Initial doses are scarce and rationed as the U.S. joins Britain and several other countries in scrambling to vaccinate as many people as possible ahead of winter. It will take months of work to tamp down the coronavirus that has surged to catastrophic levels in recent weeks and claimed 1.5 million lives globally. 815
