PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- A Charlotte County deputy was forced to use his firearm to defend himself from charging dogs during a call Thursday morning.According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, the deputy responded to a call from a resident who was afraid to exit his truck due to three loose and aggressive pit bulls in his yard. The deputy arrived to observe the dogs, described as approximately 100 pounds each, leaving the man's yard and chasing chickens in the next yard.As the deputy was speaking to the resident, the dogs returned and began to charge the men, forcing the resident back into his truck and chasing the deputy around it.The deputy fired his weapon at two of the dogs before they retreated down the road.Animal Control arrived and took the dogs into custody, giving the injured dogs treatment. They are investigating any possible citations for the owners. 889

Rep. Duncan Hunter and his wife, Margaret, were indicted Tuesday on charges related to the misuse of 0,000 worth of campaign funds for personal expenses and the filing of false campaign finance records. The charges of wire fraud, falsifying records, campaign finance violations and conspiracy were the culmination of a Department of Justice investigation that has stretched for more than a year, during which the Republican congressman from California has maintained his innocence.Republican Party leaders had long worried that with a potential indictment looming, Hunter's traditionally safe district which makes up much of eastern San Diego County could be at risk of Democratic takeover in November's midterm election.Hundreds of thousands of dollars in unusual charges on Hunter's campaign credit card had come under scrutiny, including among other things, an Italian vacation, dental work, purchases at a surf shop, and huge tabs at bars in restaurants in the San Diego and Washington DC areas. Among the most mocked charges was airfare for a pet rabbit to fly with the family, which an aide said was mistakenly charged to the wrong credit card.Hunter, a former Marine, has reimbursed his campaign account some ,000 since the Federal Election Commission first questioned spending on video games in 2016, according to Federal Election Commission records."There was wrong campaign spending, but it was not done by me," Hunter told KGTV-10, a San Diego television station, earlier this year. His comments have cast blame on his wife and former campaign manager, Margaret Hunter, who also made charges on the campaign credit card.Hunter's lawyers said last year that "any mistakes were made they were strictly inadvertent and unintentional."California's 50th District is a staunchly Republican district with many current and former military families that covers much of eastern San Diego County. The Congressman's father, Duncan L. Hunter, represented parts of the district (which changed after redistricting) and has rallied donors and supporters to his son's side.Hunter's Democratic challenger, Ammar Campa-Najjar, a former department of labor aide in the Obama administration, has repeatedly outraised him. Many Hunter allies believe he will stay in his House seat while fighting the charges.Even if a federal candidate chooses to withdraw from contention, their name will remain on the ballot unless they seek removal of their name from a judge, according to the California Secretary of State's office. At this late juncture, there is no possibility of a write-in campaign. Only Hunter and Campa-Najjar will appear on the November ballot, since they were the top vote-getters in California's top-two primary in June. This is a breaking news story and will be updated.   2789

President Donald Trump will meet Tuesday with the House and Senate Democratic leaders, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, in order to find a way to avert a partial government shutdown on December 21, when funding for the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies expires. The central debate — how to secure the US southern border — has been stewing for months. Trump wants to build a wall; Democrats don't.Schumer has urged Trump to either accept the Senate's bipartisan agreement to spend .6 billion to boost border security measures, or agree to a one-year spending resolution that would keep those funded at the current level of around .3 billion. Schumer said last week that money can be used for fencing and other features, rather than "to construct any part of President Trump's 30-foot-tall concrete border wall."Trump and Republicans in Congress, meanwhile, have pushed for billion for the wall.In an interview on Fox Sunday, Sen. Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, said, the migrant caravan moving towards the US-Mexico border is a "game-changer" and urged the President to "dig in and not give in on additional wall funding."Schumer and Pelosi released a joint statement the night before their meeting with Trump, coming out strongly against Trump's wall proposal and arguing Republicans will feel the blame of a shutdown."Republicans still control the House, the Senate, and the White House, and they have the power to keep government open," Pelosi and Schumer stated. "Our country cannot afford a Trump Shutdown, especially at this time of economic uncertainty. This holiday season, the President knows full well that his wall proposal does not have the votes to pass the House and Senate, and should not be an obstacle to a bipartisan agreement."The easiest solution for Congress to avoid a shutdown and get out of Washington before the Christmas holiday could be to avoid the issue altogether, and pass a short-term resolution to extend the rest of the federal government's spending into next year, when Democrats take over the House. But Sen. John Cornyn, the Republican Whip, said Monday he didn't expect Trump to agree to that."That really just postpones the pain, it doesn't really solve the problem," said Cornyn, explaining that Trump still wouldn't then get the wall funding he wants.Other members of Republican leadership expressed doubt about the productivity of Trump's scheduled meeting Tuesday."Oh, it could be really important," said Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri. "It's likely not to be very important."Despite Republican control of the House and Senate, Trump has little leverage to force Congress into appropriating money for the border wall. While "Build the Wall!" was perhaps Trump's most indelible campaign promise, Republicans in Congress are broadly less enamored than he is with the prospect of building it and Democrats still control enough seats in the Senate to block it.For months, Trump's frustration at Congress' response to his demand has spilled out into public. From July through September, Trump repeatedly said he'd be willing to shutdown the government over the wall, backtracked and then reiterated he would do it because he views it as a political boost. Few on Capitol Hill agree that Republicans would politically benefit should parts of the government shut down.Democratic leaders and the President appear to be far apart on the issue even though warning signs of the spending showdown have been flashing for so long.Last week, Pelosi called the proposed wall "immoral, ineffective and expensive," while Trump claimed that the country would save billions of dollars if Congress would pass a bill to build it."Either way, people will NOT be allowed into our Country illegally," Trump tweeted. "We will close the entire Southern Border if necessary." 3830

RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) — Two people were killed and a third person was seriously hurt in a head-on collision in Ramona on Wednesday.CHP said at about 12:15 p.m., a 56-year-old woman was driving a 2016 Ford Focus northbound on Mussey Grade Road, south of Mahogany Ranch Rd., at a high rate of speed. At the same time, an unidentified woman was driving a 2017 Subaru Impreza southbound on the same road. For reasons that are unclear, CHP said the driver of the Focus lost control of her vehicle and veered into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with the Impreza. The driver of the Focus and a male passenger in the Impreza died at the scene, CHP said. The driver of the Subaru was taken to Palomar Medical Center with major injuries.CHP says they believe both occupants in the Subaru were wearing a seat belt, but the driver of the Ford was not at the time of the crash. It's unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash. 943

President Donald Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, told courts in New York late Wednesday that he'd like to drop defamation lawsuits he filed against Fusion GPS and BuzzFeed regarding the production and publication of an infamous dossier on Trump and Russia.Cohen had sued Fusion, a political research firm, and the media company separately in January, one year after the Russia dossier, which was prepared for Fusion, was published by BuzzFeed. He had alleged that assertions about family ties he had to Russians and a trip he took overseas mentioned in the dossier were wrong, and that they damaged his professional reputation.By dropping the lawsuits, Cohen will avoid turning over information about himself to the companies. 742
