Three inmates in a suburban Atlanta jail are being credited with saving a deputy's life.The Gwinett County Sheriff's Office says the trio noticed the officer was not feeling well as he conducted security procedures.After he returned to his seat, the deputy lost consciousness. He then fell to the floor and hit his head.The inmates began pounding on the doors loudly enough to wake up the deputy, who then opened the cell doors.After that, he lost consciousness again. But the inmates stayed by his side and administered aid until help arrived.The deputy is now recovering at home."These inmates came to his aid because our deputy, like most law enforcement officers, treats people with the dignity they deserve," the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office said on Facebook. "These inmates had no obligation whatsoever to render aid to a bleeding, vulnerable deputy, but they didn't hesitate. Many people have strong opinions about law enforcement officers and criminals, but this incident clearly illustrates the potential goodness found in both.""We're proud of our deputy, whose strong desire to serve gave him the strength to activate the door release when he believed an inmate needed his help. They are all the rage right now, they help you find your family's history. "We've always wondered about the validity of my dad's side of the family and their claims about where we're from."Elizabeth Makos is as curious as we all are. "So we think we are half Italian, quarter Czechoslovakian and a quarter polish."She agreed to help put these DNA tests, to the test. Makos gave saliva samples three times, one for Ancestry DNA, 23 and Me and MyHeritage. We sealed them up and sent them off and waited about 6 weeks.We got her results back and here's what Makos thought of them."It's shocking. It is really shocking. I can't imagine what technology they employ to get these results," she said.It's shocking because her results were all over the place. When it comes to Eastern Europe, Ancestry said she was 49 percent Eastern European, but 23 and me and MyHeritage only put the percentage in the high 20s. "When we look at it for example, it says the Balkans here… one says 34 percent and one says 18 percent. A bit of a discrepancy there."Makos thought for sure she is 50 percent Italian. 23 and me and MyHeritage says she's closer to 30 percent. She even had some North African DNA."I would love to know," Makos said about having North African DNA. "I know I get really tan in the summer but I didn't know I got that tan… who knows."The companies don't claim to be perfectly accurate, and use different algorithms. Henderson said.You can sometimes find these items for sale on Amazon (from third-party sellers) or eBay, but you may have to pay two to three times the retail price, if you can find them at all."People are really struggling right now, " said Grace Brombach, of the consumer watchdog group U.S. PIRG. "The last thing that they need to worry about is going online and finding the products that they really need to keep themselves safe at ridiculous prices."National brands remain in short supplyStan Beck, owner of a hardware store, said that even though national brands like Windex or Johnson are hard to find, off-brand products are often just as good."This is a basic product, like Windex, just a different brand," he said, pointing to a shelf of Brillo window cleaner in his store. She has a shelf stocked with cleaning products that looks like a throwback to 2018.During our visit, she had Windex, Mr Clean, Spic n' Span, even a collection of N95 face masks, something that was impossible to find for five months.Mallory said many people don't realize that local hardware stores often have a much better selection than grocery or big box stores because of their group buying power, and the fact that fewer shoppers visit them for cleaning items.She said she can find almost anything, except those Holy Grail items: name-brand disinfecting wipes."We've tried ordering Lysol wipes," she said. "Absolutely. We're trying to keep up on what supplies we can. Some things are just not available."It's the same situation at grocery stores like Kroger.The spokeswoman for the nation's largest grocery chain, Kroger, Erin Rolfes said "our suppliers are continuing to work extra hours to keep up with the ongoing customer demand," but said shoppers buy out wipes and disinfectants the moment they are put on the shelves.So what can you do?Visit your grocery store midweek, first thing in the morning, when those wipes and other products are put out.Purchase store brands, or off brands, when you find them, especially when it comes to wipes and toilet cleaners.Visit your local hardware store, and get to know the manager. Some will hold products for you if you ask.Check Amazon frequently.But U.S. PIRG says resist the urge to pay double or triple the price on eBay, because that encourages sellers to charge even more.And report gouging to Amazon customer service.
