SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said here Monday the U.S.-China cooperation enables both countries to be more prosperous and more secure and that young people are the best ambassadors.     Obama had a dialogue with 500-strong Chinese college students Monday afternoon in the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, a highlighted activity in the first stop of his four-day maiden trip to China since taking office in January.     He covered a wide range of topics, notably the outlook of Sino-U.S. cooperation and youth exchanges between the two countries, while delivering opening remarks and answering questions from the students and Chinese Internet users.     POSITIVE SINO-U.S. TIES     Obama said China is a nation that encompasses both a rich history and a belief in the promises of the future and that the same can be said of the relationship between the two countries. The Shanghai Communiqué signed 37 years ago opened the door to a new chapter of engagement between the governments and the people of the two countries, he said.     "Today we have a positive, constructive and comprehensive relationship that opens the door to partnership on the key global issues of our time: economic recovery, development of clean energy, stopping the spread of nuclear weapons and the surge of climate change, and the promotion of peace and security in Asia and around the globe," Obama said.     "We have seen what is possible when we build on our mutual interests and engage on the basis of mutual respect."     The success of that engagement depends on understanding, on sustaining an open dialogue and learning about one another and from one another, he said.     "Our relationship has not been without disagreement and difficulties. But the notion that we must be adversaries is not predestined," Obama said, noting that the two countries "share much in common" while they are "different in certain ways."     He said one country's success need not come at the expense of another.     "That is why the United States insists we do not seek to contain China's rise; on the contrary, we welcome China as a strong and prosperous and successful member of the community of nations, a China that draws on the rights, strengths and creativity of individual Chinese like you," Obama said to the students.     YOUNG PEOPLE BEST AMBASSADORS     Obama announced in his speech that the United States would further expand its youth exchanges with China by increasing the number of students studying in China to 100,000.     "These exchanges mark a clear commitment to build ties among our people, as surely as you will help us determine the destiny of the 21st century," he said.     He said young people in China and U.S. are the best ambassadors and that cooperation between the countries should go beyond the governments.     "I believe strongly that cooperation must grow beyond our government. It must be rooted in our people, in the studies we share, in the business we do, in the knowledge that we gain, and even in the sports we play, and these bridges must be built by men and women just like you, and your counterparts in America," Obama said.     "I am absolutely confident that America has no better ambassadors to offer than our young people, for they just like you are filled with talent, energy and optimism about the history that is yet to be written.     "So let this be the next step in the steady pursuit of cooperation between our two nations and the world," Obama said.     "If there is one thing we can take from today's dialogue, I hope that it is a commitment to continue this dialogue going forward," Obama said in his speech. 

BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Tuesday called for more efforts to optimize land use in order to save resources and further economic restructuring.     Li made the remarks during an inspection to the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR). As the most populous country in the world, China has been faced with shortages of land, water, energy and minerals, and the shortages were worsened by rapid economic growth, he said. BEIJING, Jan. 10 -- Shanghai has set a GDP growth rate target for the year of more than 8 percent, almost the same as 2009's economic development rate.     Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng yesterday announced the target at a one-day session of the Shanghai Committee of the Communist Party of China.     He added the growth rate of value-added output from the service industry should be much higher than the GDP rate.     The city didn't set a higher GDP goal because it wanted to put more effort into restructuring the economy than simply seeking more GDP growth, Yu told the meeting.     The city's GDP growth was estimated to be more than 8 percent last year, a little lower than the average national level. Total retail sales of consumer goods rose by about 14 percent and growth of fixed assets investment was around 10 percent in 2009.     Yu said the targeted rate was a suitable development speed for Shanghai, which was hit by the global financial crisis during its economic restructure transition.     He told the session that the World Expo 2010 Shanghai was the most important task for the government this year.     It requires not only coordination of all districts and departments but also active participation and devotion by citizens, he said.     "We should spare no efforts to ensure a successful, wonderful and unforgettable Expo," he said.     "We should make full use of the opportunity to stimulate investment and consumption, enhance friendly cooperation with the world and build a city with international influence."     Yu emphasized the importance of security during Expo. He requested government officials to strengthen anti-terrorism efforts, guarantee food and drug safety and quality, and keep monitoring and preventing public health events, such as outbursts of swine flu.     To enhance transport during Expo, the government will continue a series of infrastructure works. More Metro lines and cross-river projects will be completed this year.     Construction of the Bund, Shanghai-Nanjing inter-city railway and the Hongqiao transport hub are planned to be finished this year.     Yu stressed that government officials should consider people's interests at all time and listen to their advices. He said the government should reduce impact on life during Expo as much as possible.     Also, Yu said regulation and control in the real estate market will be improved to help it develop in a healthy and sustainable way. And 500,000 new jobs will be created to keep the unemployment rate around 4.5 percent.

BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said here Thursday that Japan's move to build facilities on the Okinotori atoll will not change its legal status, as Japan is seeking vast economic interests at the nearby southern Pacific.     According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLS), and based on the natural and geographic situation of the Okinotori atoll, neither exclusive economic zones nor continental shelves should be claimed on it, Spokesperson Jiang Yutold a regular press briefing.     Japan has asked the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf to recognize the extended area around the so-called "Okinotori island," 1,740 km south of Tokyo, as its continental shelf, which would enable it to claim a vast surrounding area as an exclusive economic zone.     According to Article 121 of the UNCLS, rocks that cannot sustain human habitation or an economic life of their own shall have no exclusive economic zone or continental shelf.     According to Japanese media report, the Japanese government plans to build a port and conduct mineral explorations on the atoll in 2010.     "Building facilities on it would not change the atoll's legal status," Jiang said.     Such a bid did not conform to the international laws of the sea and was against the interests of the international community, she said.

Taufik told Chinese leaders that this showed the importance attached by Indonesia to relations with China.     Indonesia valued the friendly and cooperative ties with China, he said, hoping that the two nations would increase pragmatic cooperation in infrastructure construction and resources exploitation.     He said the People's Consultative Assembly was ready to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the NPC and the CPPCC to contribute to comprehensive growth of Indonesia-China ties.     Taufik reiterated that his country would firmly stick to the one-China policy.
