SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of Black student leaders from Poway Unified School District schools met last week with administrators, principals and counselors to discuss ways to address issues of racism and inequality in the district. The students are the presidents of the Black Student Unions at each of PUSD's five high schools. It was the first meeting since the student leaders sent an email asking to see changes in the district to improve the lives of students of color."Making PUSD not just not racist but transparently anti-racist," said Jade Thompson, president of the BSU at Rancho Bernardo High School.Thompason helped write the email, which also talked about the recently created Instagram account "Black in PUSD,” which anonymously details students' experiences with racism."We just think it was a great way to open up people's eyes cause people like to say not in this community," said Thompson.Superintendent Dr. Kim Phelps agrees, saying, "To hold people accountable, including the district and our teachers and everybody ... I'm proud of our students for doing that.”Phelps and Thompson both described the meeting as productive and positive.Among the issues discussed were student education and assemblies addressing racism. The district is also committing to more diverse hiring and curriculum."It's upon us to try to do better; we have a lot of work to do and we want to do better so it’s a growing and learning opportunity for all of us," said Phelps. The students and administrators also talked about the consequences for racism-related incidents.Students said they'd like to see a form of restorative justice instead of just punishment.Although both students and staff agree there's a lot more to be done, they also say the first step is recognizing the problem and starting the conversation."I have a lot of hope for the future of this year and the years to come," said Thompson. 1906

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Bankers Hill woman may be forced to tear down part of her historic home to make way for a city park with an AIDS memorial.Otherwise, she faces thousands of dollars in daily fines from the city. Jennifer Hasso has owned the 1924 Tudor-style home since 1998. She says she's invested millions to restore it to its glory. The city even designated it as historic. The house sits at the end of 2nd Avenue in Bankers Hill. Right behind it, a nearly one-acre site on Olive Street the city is eyeing for a community park with an AIDS memorial. The park would also include fitness and seating areas, walkways and an overlook deck. County property maps show the city owns the land immediately north of Hasso's home, which has no setback from its property line. In fact, Hasso's bay window and chimney extend over that property line, and her entire backyard extend is across that line. 904

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - 10News was there as an emotional burglary victim was reunited with her stolen Pekachu puppy.Ashley Morales was overcome with emotion as young Lorenz Lugg placed her 4-month-old puppy back in her arms. "I can't believe it. I never thought I would get him back," said Morales. On Monday, a distraught Morales sat down with 10news after a Sunday morning burglary at her Spring Valley condo on Madrid Way. As her children slept inside, a neighbor's surveillance cameras captured several suspects as they walked in and out of the condo. Missing from the home: a television, jewelry, and Snuffles the Pekachu."I just want my dog back," said Morales, as she pleaded for her puppy's return. What she didn't know was that her puppy was at Payd 2 Fade barber shop in the College Area. Shop owner Roc Lugg says early Monday afternoon, a man resembling the suspect in the video came in with a story."He had the dog, but was homeless and living out of his vehicle. Couldn't afford to take care of the dog anymore," said Lugg. When Lugg saw how well the dog was interacting with his own dog, he decided to purchase the puppy to give him a better home. He paid 0. Later that day, his wife got a big shock as she was watching 10news. She realized their new puppy was actually someone else's. Their young son led the charge to reunite puppy and owner."I was desperate to find them and give it back to them. He needed to be home," said Lorenz Lugg. The family called 10news and we called Morales. ="I'm glad humanity is still thriving ... I'm over the moon. I got my baby back. I can't believe it," said Morales.Morales did give the family a reward to help cover the money they spent on the purchase. No arrests have been made in the burglary investigation. 1769
