SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - U.S. Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) and his wife Margaret were indicted by a federal grand jury in San Diego Tuesday on suspicion of converting more than 0,000 in campaign funds to pay for extravagant vacations and other personal expenses.The Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California said the 48-page indictment includes instances from 2009 through 2016 in which the Hunters reportedly used campaign money illegally. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Tuesday marked the the 10-year anniversary of one of the most chilling murders in the history of San Diego County.Chelsea King, 17, was raped and murdered by a registered sex offender as she was out for jog around Lake Hodges in 2010.Today, her family launched a nationwide organization called "Protect the Joy" that will work to protect children.RELATED: A decade later, remembering Chelsea King and Amber DuboisLife changed for Brent King and his wife Kelly a decade ago. Their only daughter was missing out for a run then, nowhere to be found."You can't breathe. Your whole body is shaking, your chest is as tight as it's ever been," Brent King said. "You can't be in enough places at once. Every horrible thought is running through your mind as to whats happening … you know ... Where's my little girl?"After five excruciating days came the most brutal news of all. Chelsea's body was found buried in brush along the banks of Lake Hodges. "The hardest memory I have is the day that Sheriff Johnson pulled me aside and told me what had happened. And I then shared that with Kelly and Tyler," King said. "That was the hardest moment for me of my life. To not only to understand what had happened to my little girl, but then to have to share that with the two people that I care for the most." The community came together in sadness. Within weeks thousands gathered to finish Chelsea's run. It would become an annual event for the next eight years. The King family established the Chelsea's Light Foundation. To date, it's awarded over 0,000 in scholarships to local students. California lawmakers passed Chelsea's Law, which established stricter penalties for sex crimes against children.But the Kings aren't done. They're launching an organization called Protect the Joy to work on passing legislation to protect children across the country."[It's] really an umbrella organization that will work on passing legislation that will protect our kids from all those things out there," King added. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A man was arrested last month after allegedly using a body bag and gurney to steal from a deceased man’s home, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.On August 31st, around noon, sheriff’s deputies responded to a welfare check at a Spring Valley home and discovered a 60-year-old man dead inside.They say he died of natural causes and was transported to a mortuary by a contracted independent mortuary service.A couple of days later, the victim’s family reported missing items, including a gun and a safe. They then watched surveillance video from the home and learned it had been burglarized.The alleged burglary happened about 11 hours after deputies responded to the welfare check.In the video provided by the sheriff's department, you see a man, now identified as Sammy Willie Gates, rolling a gurney and body bag out of the house and into a white van.Detectives say the body bag was full of stolen items.Gates is the owner of Mortuary Transportation services, a contracted independent mortuary service; however, deputies say his company was not used to transport the victim’s body earlier.It’s unclear how Gates would have known the home was empty.Detectives from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station served a search warrant at Gates home in unincorporated El Cajon on September 9th.Inside, they found the victim’s safe and gun, along with 16 more firearms, two additional safes, jewelry, watches, war medals, comic books, thousands of dollars in collectible coins, and multiple personal identifying documents.Detectives also found a gurney and body bag matching the items in the video in Gate’s white utility van.He was arrested and charged with felonies, including Burglary of the First Degree and Receiving Stolen Property.Gates has prior felonies and is due in court for a preliminary hearing in January. 1857

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two separate studies show flu and pneumonia vaccines may reduce your risks of developing Alzheimer’s disease in the future.The findings were presented on Monday during the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference, which was held virtually for the first time because of COVID-19. The conference was supposed to be in Amsterdam this year.In one study, researchers found that getting a flu shot showed a 17% reduction in the development of the disease. The earlier people got the vaccine, the better the protection against the disease.“Each year, successively, if they did get another flu shot they got more reduction, so almost up to a 30 to 35% of a reduction of the development of dementia, just by getting the flu shot,” said Katie Croskrey, the executive director of the San Diego/Imperial chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.In a separate study, researchers found similar reductions for developing dementia for those that received a pneumonia vaccine between the ages of 65 and 75.“You had a reduction of almost 40% of not developing dementia,” said Croskrey.Croskrey said these studies are just the starting point for more research to find out how the vaccines are correlated to reducing the risks of the disease. More research is also needed to determine if just getting the vaccines alone reduce the risk, or if it has to do more with lifestyle changes.Also announced on Monday, research that shows that individuals with dementia are six times more likely to die after infections than those that do not have dementia.The virtual international conference continues on Tuesday, where researchers are expected to discuss blood biomarkers that could identify a person with a potential for developing Alzheimer’s up to 20 years before any symptoms appear.
